Geoffrey L. Cohen is a Professor of Psychology and the James G. March Professor of Organizational Studies in Education and Business at Stanford University. He is a social psychologist by training and received his PHD at Stanford and his BA at Cornell. Professor Cohenâs research examines the processes that shape peopleâs sense of belonging and self-concept, and the role that these processes play in various social problems. He has studied the big and small threats to belonging and self-integrity that people encounter in school, work, health care settings, politics, communities, and relationships. He and others have developed concrete, science-backed strategies to create more welcoming spaces for people from all walks of life. Show Notes: On this episode of How to Human, Sam Lamott speaks with his dear friend Laura Whitfield. When Laura Whitfield was fourteen, her extraordinary brother, Lawrence, was killed in a mountain climbing accident. That night she had an epiphany: Life is short. Dream big, even if it means taking risks. After graduating from high school, she set out on her own and moved to North Carolinaâs Outer Banks for a magical summer filled with friendships, boys, and beer. One night she met a handsome DJ, who everyone called âSteve the Dream,â and risked her heart. When September came, Steve moved to New York City to become a model, which prompted Laura to start thinking about modeling, too. After a semester of college, and still seeking to fill the void left by her brotherâs death, she dropped out and moved to New York to become a cover girl. But while juggling the demands of life in the big city waiting tables, failed relationships, and the cutthroat world of modeling Laura lost her way. Untethered is a stirring memoir about a young womanâs quest to find hope and stability after devastating loss. Ultimately, itâs about overcoming shame, embracing faith, and learning that taking risks and failing can lead to a bigger life than one might dare to imagine. Writer, educator, and activist Dr. Simran Jeet Singh is the executive director for the Aspen Instituteâs Religion and Society Program and author of The Light We Give: How Sikh Wisdom Can Transform Your Life. In his work and contemplative talks, he offers a fresh approach to ethical livingâone in which love, caring, and service go hand-in-hand with personal happiness. He shares the skills and insights that kept him engaged in his commitment to activism, and how to use compassion as the antidote to anger, self-pity, or social justice burnout. Growing up in Texas as the son of Indian immigrants and a self-described âturban-wearing, brown-skinned, beard-loving Sikh,â Simran Jeet Singh constantly confronted racism, bullying, and ethnic slurs. But, where others may have grown bitter or angry, he looked to the lessons of Sikh teachings he grew up with to seek out the good in every situation and find positive ways to direct his energy. You may have heard Matthews's story. A criminal steals a safe containing evidence of sexual violence against children, and has to confront a moral dilemma. Does he admit to stealing the safe and go to prison, so a violent offender faces justice and canât hurt more children, or does he ignore what heâs just seen so he can be a free man? Matthew and I have become good friends, and have talked about this story many times since the recording of the episode. He almost hates it because itâs a life-defining moment that doesnât define who he is today. Itâs a story that has transcended all the humans involved, and become archetypal mythology. A story of good vs. evil, and a story of the redemption of a broken man. Whatever you think of the story, Matthew Hahn has been many things in his lifetime. A career criminal and drug addict, a selfless man of courage, a convict, a devout Buddhist, a recovered drug addict, and a loving husband and friend. Briggs, a retired California Highway Patrol sergeant, spent many years patrolling the Golden Gate Bridge. While on patrol, he encountered numerous individuals clinging to life by a thread â individuals who had lost hope and could see no way out of their current situation - ready to jump off the bridge to what they assumed was a sudden death and end of their pain and hopelessness. Briggs, through his compassion, gentle voice, eye contact, and his innate ability of âlistening to understandâ encouraged more than 200 individuals over his career to either not go over the bridgeâs rail or come back to solid ground from where they had been standing precariously out on the chord of the bridge and start a new chapter in their life. These challenging, but rewarding efforts earned him the nickname âGuardian of the Golden Gate Bridge.â After a 23-year career with the California Highway Patrol, Briggs retired to dedicate his life to promote mental health awareness across the globe through Pivotal Points, an organization he founded. Today, Briggs is mapping a movement as he speaks and trains others in suicide prevention, crisis management, and negotiations. He shares his âListening to Understandâ skills followed up with key active listening points; his personal triad for healthy living; his RELEASE model to assist in communicating with someone in crisis and his crisis safety plan for those who may be struggling. He also discusses in-depth his own personal mental health struggles. Briggs spends the majority of his time speaking/teaching at conferences, advocacy events, colleges and universities, first responder conferences, law enforcement (including FBI & Secret Service), and military bases. Suicide prevention lifeline: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ or call: 1-800-273-8255 TWLOHA find help resource: https://twloha.com/find-help/ For more of Kevin: TED talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/kevin_briggs_the_bridge_between_suicide_and_life Book: https://www.amazon.com/Guardian-Golden-Gate-Protecting-Between/dp/0990437574 To become a patron and help this program continue producing Mood Altering Substance, go to www.patreon.com/hellohuman and pledge any amount. Challenging the idea that faith concerns questions relating to belief, Peterâs incendiary and religionless reading of Christianity attacks the distinction between the sacred and the secular. At 19, while in his sophomore year of college, BJ was electrocuted and subsequently became a triple amputee. Undaunted, BJ returned to Princeton to study art history and eventually decided to focus on medicine, which ultimately led him into palliative care. Palliative care is a specialty that focuses on patients with life limiting and terminal illnesses, it requires an intimate knowledge of death and a heart that is courageous enough to look into the darkest corners of ourselves to find out what we are ultimately living for. The famed German poet Rainer Maria Rilke wrote, "Let everything happen to you, beauty and terror, just keep going, no feeling is final," BJ is the living embodiment of this idea. Shoshana Berger is the editorial director at IDEO and coauthor of the book A Beginners Guide To The End. Shoshana got her start as a writer for a magazine called Bikini (no jokes) for whom she interviewed Jeff Buckley and Allen Ginsberg. That led to writing for the New York Times, SPIN, WIRED, and a stint as the editorial director (more like âcool-hunterâ) for Young & Rubicam. With little more than a fuzzy idea and a boil in the blood, she went on to found ReadyMade, a national do-it-yourself design magazine. The venture was funded by 10 credit cards. (Her credit rating is excellent). ReadyMade was a finalist for National Magazine Awards in 2005 and 2006. After co-authoring the book ReadyMade: How to Make Almost Everything (Clarkson Potter), she sold the business to the Meredith Corp., publisher of Better Homes & Gardens. Shoshana then joined WIRED as director of special projects in 2011, and launched a new website, WIRED Design. She landed at IDEO in 2013 as editorial director and hasn't looked back. âI was a four-time loser before I realized I was in the wrong game.â That was the first line of the autobiographical story that appeared on the back of every loaf of Daveâs Killer Bread from 2005 to 2014. âFour-time loserâ refers to his four prison sentences for crimes ranging from burglary to armed robbery to drug dealing. He once shared abandoned houses with cockroaches on the streets of Detroit in the dead of winter, and now he lives in a luxurious high-rise penthouse in downtown PDX. His story epitomizes transformation. The story on the bread bag remained unchanged until 2014 after Dahl had a well-publicized mental breakdown. He had to accept thatâat least for Dave Dahlâthereâs no âhappily ever afterâ. But he finds great satisfaction in âfighting the good fightâ, one day at a time. He believes that forgiveness of self and others is essential to inner peace and personal growth. But itâs only one of many lessons heâs come away with through all of his strugglesâand triumphs. Daveâs Killer Bread, a family endeavor, was sold to Flowers Foods in 2015, leaving Dave with a void to fill. He spent the next 2-plus years building what is perhaps the largest collection of African tribal art in the world. During this time, he lived a semi-hermetic lifestyle. Now, with a healed heart and mind, he steps back out on a mission to help inspire others to find their own brand of success. Dave: ââGood Seedâ is much more than a killer bread recipe. Having been a âbad seedâ and destroying everything in my path as a troubled young man, I finally found the path of acceptance, humility and teachability. It gives me the courage to fall down 7 times and get up 8.â Dahl hosts a podcast, âFelony Inc.â, which runs live on Fridays at 10am Pacific on www.startupradionetwork.com and on any podcast app. Dave has candid conversations with former felons whoâve become honest, hard-working entrepreneurs. Having used adversity as a springboard, they have inspiring stories of personal transformation, grit, and startup experience. Previously-recorded episodes are also available. https://m.soundcloud.com/felonyincpodcast Daveâs recently-reformed band, the Killer Granddaddies, is made up of fellow former knuckleheads. They play blues rock covers and originals. Dahlâs overarching goal is to inspire and enable better people, businesses, and communitiesâin his words, âto help anyone who is willing to do the work to enjoy the journey like I have...to create their own success story.â For more of Dave: Website: https://davedahl360.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/killerbreadman/ To become a patron and help this program continue producing Mood Altering Substance, go to www.patreon.com/hellohuman and pledge any amount.
