428: What Fashion Taught Me About Motherhood (Yes, Really!) // Julie Allen

I've never considered myself a person who cares about fashion or "style" so when I first stumbled across Julie Allen on Instagram, I didn’t expect to stick around. But something about the way she talked about clothes felt different. It was kind, approachable, and freeing. Julie teaches women how to embrace style tools instead of style rules, and as I listened to her, I realized how much that philosophy overlaps with how I think about motherhood. There’s no one right way to be a mom—or to get dressed. It’s about finding what fits you and building a life you love from there. Julie is a mom of six and a style educator who’s passionate about helping women reconnect with themselves through the way they show up each day. In this episode, she shares three style principles that double as beautiful life lessons for moms—and they might just shift the way you think about both your wardrobe and your parenting. We’ll talk about: ✨ How to use style (and motherhood) tools instead of rigid rules ✨ Why you’re allowed to express different parts of yourself—on any given day ✨ The importance of building your motherhood on a foundation of your core values Whether or not you’ve ever cared much about fashion, this episode will help you feel more confident in showing up as you. 426: What to Do When You Don't Like Your Kid (Even Though You Love Them!)

This is one of those episodes I felt called to record because I know so many of us have been here. You love your child with your whole heart, and yet, in certain seasons, you find yourself thinking, I just don’t like them very much right now.   That doesn’t make you a bad mom. It makes you human.   In this solo episode, I’m sharing three tools that have helped me move through those really hard parenting stretches—when one child is pushing every button I have—and find my way back to affection, connection, and even joy.   We’ll talk about:   💜 How your child’s “hardest” traits may actually be their biggest strengths in disguise 💜 Why the words you say about your child (even when they’re not around) can shape how you see them 💜 What to do when your child is constantly seeking negative attention—and how you can gently redirect that cycle   I’ll also tell you about a simple mindset shift that changed the way I experience motherhood—plus the journaling tool I created to help me live it out day by day.   If you’re in a tough season with one of your kids, I hope this episode feels like sitting down with a trusted friend who truly gets it—and who can gently offer some ideas for how to keep going.   For full show notes, including takeaways, click here. *** Announcements: Don’t forget, the Flecks of Gold Journal is on sale now through Mother’s Day. 415: How to Get Help for Mental Illness // Sarah McKenna

After my daughter Sally was born, I stopped sleeping. During the day, I had a hard time looking at my baby because I didn’t feel like I could take care of myself, let alone her. Up to this point, I had managed my natural melancholy okay on my own, but after a terrifying panic attack, I reached out for professional help.  I attribute my quick decision to get help to my older sister, Sarah, who has fought mental illness since she was a young teenager.  This time of year can be especially difficult for many emotionally. That’s why I’m dedicating three episodes to the focus on mental health in motherhood. On Monday, you heard Sarah and I discuss depression in motherhood. Today’s episode is focused on how to get professional help. Next week, you’ll hear from Sarah’s husband, Logan, about how to support a loved one who’s struggling with mental illness.  In this second episode of the series, we discuss:  - A practical tip to help you stay honest with your doctor & therapist - A few helpful thoughts if you’re scared to try medication.  - Two kinds of therapy you might not have thought about before.  For full show notes, including takeaways, click here.  Whether you are struggling with mental illness or you have a loved one who is, I hope you find this series of episodes helpful.  [Free Download ] Guide to Nurturing Yourself when Managing Depression // To support you even further, I’ve created a packet that includes actionable ways to support yourself in depression and how to support a loved one who is struggling, as well as a QR code that links to a private playlist of all of the episodes I’ve released about mental illness.  Whatever battles you’re fighting right now, my friend, I want you to know you’re not alone.  *** Announcements:  To receive the guide I created with actionable ways to support yourself or a loved one with mental illness, click here.   Related Episodes: 414: Feeling Low Right Now? 3 Tools to Help You Cope // Sarah McKenna 319: Three Tools I Use to Manage Anxiety and Depression 184: Living Well with Depression & Anxiety // Jenny Showalter Let’s Connect: Join me on Instagram! That’s why I truly feel like it’s important this time of year to talk about mental illness in motherhood.  To give this topic the full focus it deserves, I’m dedicating the next three episodes to focusing on mental health in motherhood. 412: How to Overcome Overwhelm

As we enter this time of year, I find myself reflecting on clutter—both the physical clutter in my home and the mental clutter in my mind. I'm especially focused on those areas that feel disorganized and overwhelming. Can you relate?  Last week, I shared an insightful interview with Erica Layne, discussing mindset shifts that can help us declutter our homes in lasting ways. This week, I want to dive into the topic of decluttering our mental spaces. To guide us, I've decided to share a recording of a live online masterclass that I taught last year about overcoming overwhelm. While it’s longer than my usual 30-minute episodes, it does have three takeaways, and I hope you'll find it incredibly valuable.  In this episode, you’ll: - Learn about the difference between stress & overwhelm - Hear some strategies you can use if you’re in the midst of overwhelm - Receive some scripts you can use to opt out of commitments that are too much for you  Thanks for taking some extra time today, beyond our regular thirty minutes, to learn about overcoming overwhelm! If you are interested in dedicating yourself to a true transformation - going from constant unhealthy overwhelm to more productive stress mixed with a lot more joy and fun - sign up for my Declutter your Motherhood Audio course by the end of January for $50 off with the code NEWYEAR. 411: Decluttering That Sticks: 3 Mindset Changes for Lasting Impact // Erica Layne

With the new year comes a new surge of energy for me to GET MY LIFE IN ORDER! My kids always laugh at me when I get these bursts of motivation because they never last. They roll their eyes and humor me as I declare plans to declutter our home and patiently wait for my resolve to fizzle. Is this cycle familiar to you too? Well, if so, you’re in for a treat. I truly believe that with some mindset shifts and a deeper commitment to our WHY for decluttering our homes, this can be the year that decluttering actually sticks.  My guest today, Erica Layne from The Life on Purpose Movement, believes this too. On this week’s episode, Erica will share: - The simple mindset shift that can make it easier to "get to work" when you're feeling overwhelmed by your messy house.  - What clutter does (and does NOT) say about you.  - The best way to approach decluttering with sentimental items. Are you ready to start the decluttering process and follow through this time? Let’s do this! 410: Align Your Goal-Setting with Your Menstrual Cycle // April Davis of Haus of Vagina

As we dive into the season of goal-setting and resolutions, I want to start with an episode focused on honoring and understanding our female bodies and how that relates to goal-setting. Because guess what? As women, we are physiologically unable to have the same level of energy and motivation every single day of the month due to our menstrual cycles, and that TRUTH should absolutely change the way that we set goals. We will not be exactly consistent with goals because our bodies are not exactly consistent, and that is okay! In this episode, April Davis of Haus of Vagina educates us on our menstrual cycles and how to align our goals with our cycles, including: 1. The four phases of the menstrual cycle. 2. What to expect from ourselves during each phase. 3. Strategies for aligning our goals and ambitions with our cycle. 406: Navigating Holiday Melancholy // Dr. Tanmeet Sethi

It’s “the most wonderful time of the year,” but for some of us, it doesn’t necessarily feel like it. I know not everyone relates to this confusing angst during the holidays, but maybe you do. Maybe you put a smile on your face for the parties and events, but inside, you might feel as alone as the Grinch sitting in his cave on top of the hill because who feels down during the holidays? Is your heart just three sizes too small?  In today's episode, I'm joined by Dr. Tanmeet Sethi, who shares three tangible ways we can navigate these melancholy feelings during this time of year, including: 1. A simple exercise to soften your melancholy so it doesn’t overpower you.  2. A powerful way to boost your energy and feel more at peace.  3. The single best thing you can do to mother yourself during this season.  Listening to Dr. Sethi’s blend of compassion and research feels like a hug for my inner Eeyore! I hope you feel the same way! Feeling overwhelmed by the jingling chaos of the holiday season? You're not alone! The holidays can add a huge load on us moms. This week, 4 of my team members - Molly, Christy, Abby, and Emily - share three practical tips for managing the mental load during this busy time of year. 404: 3 Ways to Teach Children Gratitude

Wouldn’t it be nice if our kids innately felt grateful for all we (and others) do for them? That they naturally expressed gratitude and could see how blessed they are?  Certainly, some kids are more predisposed than others, but it’s been my experience, and I’m guessing yours too, that this doesn’t come naturally to most kids. Instead, gratitude is a skill that needs to be taught and practiced repeatedly.  So the big question is: how do we teach it?  Today’s episode will focus on three actionable, realistic ways to teach your kids gratitude.  Click play NOW to jump in! 403: Brain Science Simplified: How to Be a More Effective Parent // Dan Siegel, M.D.

Our children's reactions are often NOT logical. Their outbursts of emotion sometimes seem ridiculous and outsized, and when we try to "talk some sense into them," it usually makes everything worse. Before we know it, we find ourselves yelling and reacting with big anger, and the whole family spirals into a swamp of dysregulation.  Can you relate? 🫣 Believe me, I've been there, and if you have too, you are going to love today's episode with a neurobiological researcher, Dr. Dan Siegel, who explains the brain science behind why children react the way that they do and how understanding the structures and functions of the human brain can help us to become more patient and ultimately effective parents. Radical gratitude is a powerful practice to help you through difficult times. But if you’re in the thick of difficult times (which I know many of you are!), you might be tempted to click away right now. And I get why. ❤️‍🩹 When things are hard, it can often feel impossible to feel gratitude. In fact, during our most trying times, it can even feel insulting if someone suggests that we focus on gratitude! Who wants to be grateful when everything seems overwhelming, difficult, and maybe even hopeless and dark? The suggestion to “look on the bright side” or “find the silver lining” can feel invalidating and dismissive of our deep pain.  If this sounds familiar, I send you my deepest love and empathy, and I hope today’s interview on radical gratitude with Dr. Tanmeet Sethi resonates with you.  For full show notes, including takeaways, click here. *** Announcement: Get $5 off Flecks of Gold Journals through the month of November! 395: What to Do if Your Teen is Exhausting You // Andee Martineau

I recently taught a free masterclass all about mom rage. Toward the beginning of the class, I asked the women in attendance to share something that makes them feel angry on a regular basis. One mom shared: “Feeling rejected by my teen who wants nothing to do with me. This is not the mother-daughter relationship I envisioned.” 💔 This comment stopped my breath for a second. How painful for this mom! No wonder she feels angry about it a lot. I'm guessing she feels a lot of other things, too: sadness, despair, loneliness … I’m guessing she feels tired! Tired of the disconnection with her daughter, tired of the feelings of failure, tired of the nagging and conflict in her home.  And I'm also guessing she's not alone in all these feelings. Parenting a teenager can feel exhausting, grueling, and just plain hard!  If you can relate, today’s conversation with Andee Martineau is for you. 394: Kids and Technology: Helping Children Develop an Internal Filter // Emily Jones

Protecting my kids from the dangers in the online world is a high priority for me. My son is 13, and I’m still holding off giving him a phone, even though he insists he’s the only one in eighth grade who doesn’t have one.  (And I want to say here that it's okay if you have a different view on what's best for your child, so no judgment on when you decide to make a phone available to them!!)  When he does get a phone in the next year or two, he will definitely have limits and filters to help him navigate his phone safely. But unfortunately, we all know that even the most adept filters and limits aren’t foolproof. In fact, the best internet filter of all will come from Noah! The only way I can fully protect him from online danger is to help him develop his own internal filter.   My guest, Emily Jones, is a writer, speaker, author, and mother of 5. She and her husband Dave co-founded Family Tech University, which is a movement dedicated to helping parents prepare their children for today's tech in new and powerful ways. Emily shares with us today how to help our kids use technology wisely as they develop their own internal filters. 391: Parenting a Child with ADHD: How to Stay Calm and Connected // Rachel on The Childhood Collective

Parenting a child with big emotions, big reactions, and a neurodiverse brain can be a real challenge. \U0001fae0 I know this firsthand because my son Noah has always been spicy and spirited, and he was diagnosed with ADHD at the end of 5th grade. His formal diagnosis has been a huge blessing for our family, as it has given us a way to research ways to support him and to help him understand his own unique brain and body. One of our biggest sources of education has been The Childhood Collective, a website hosted by three moms who are experts in child development. Lori and Mallory are both child psychologists, and Katie is a speech-language pathologist. They offer incredibly helpful online courses, social media content, and a podcast called Shining with ADHD. I was honored to be a guest on their podcast earlier this year, talking about what I have learned in my journey as the parent of a child with ADHD, and they graciously allowed me to re-air the audio from that interview here on 3 in 30. I don't want you to miss out on this unique opportunity to grow within your motherhood, which is why, for the next 48 hours ONLY, I'm airing my Masterclass that I've been teaching live to groups on Zoom the past few weeks. In this class, I introduce three of my core principles of Self-Assured Motherhood and answer some frequently asked questions about the program. I hope this limited-time bonus episode will give you a taste of SAM and help you decide if you want to join before the doors close for another year. *** Announcements: Self-Assured Motherhood Program: The doors to SAM are open until this Thursday, Sept 19! It only opens once per year, so join while you can! ***
