It’s amazing how just one small word can shift an entire conversation—for better or worse. Without realizing it, we often invite comparison into our discussions, creating unnecessary tension or discomfort. That’s why I’m thrilled to have Kathie Gwilliam on the podcast this week! Kathie is an expert at identifying the subtle ways comparison sneaks into our language, and she’s here to help us become more self-aware. In this episode, you’ll learn: ✅ Three common phrases that unintentionally fuel comparison—and what to say instead. ✅ How to help your kids when they feel insecure after someone else gets a compliment. ✅ A simple way to introduce yourself with confidence. ✅ Why we need to be mindful of body-talk around our kids—plus a healthy way to process body image struggles. Since learning from Kathie, I’ve been catching myself making comparisons—and I’m working on changing that! I’d love to hear how this episode impacts you. After my daughter Sally was born, I stopped sleeping. During the day, I had a hard time looking at my baby because I didn’t feel like I could take care of myself, let alone her. Up to this point, I had managed my natural melancholy okay on my own, but after a terrifying panic attack, I reached out for professional help. I attribute my quick decision to get help to my older sister, Sarah, who has fought mental illness since she was a young teenager. This time of year can be especially difficult for many emotionally. That’s why I’m dedicating three episodes to the focus on mental health in motherhood. On Monday, you heard Sarah and I discuss depression in motherhood. Today’s episode is focused on how to get professional help. Next week, you’ll hear from Sarah’s husband, Logan, about how to support a loved one who’s struggling with mental illness. In this second episode of the series, we discuss: - A practical tip to help you stay honest with your doctor & therapist - A few helpful thoughts if you’re scared to try medication. - Two kinds of therapy you might not have thought about before. For full show notes, including takeaways, click here. Whether you are struggling with mental illness or you have a loved one who is, I hope you find this series of episodes helpful. This time of year, I struggle more with depression. The winter months can be a really hard time - and I know it’s just not me! That’s why I truly feel like it’s important this time of year to talk about mental illness in motherhood. To give this topic the full focus it deserves, I’m dedicating the next three episodes to focusing on mental health in motherhood. This week, you’ll hear previous episodes I aired with my beloved older sister, Sarah, where we discuss depression in motherhood and how to get help with mental illness. After that, I will air a new episode with Sarah’s husband, Logan, about ways to care for a loved one struggling with mental illness. In this first episode of the series, we discuss: One way depression manifests itself that you might not recognize (hint: knowing this might help you not feel so guilty when it hits). A simple tip to help on those days when depression makes it too hard to even eat. A helpful rule of thumb to use when deciding which self-care strategy you need most. As we enter this time of year, I find myself reflecting on clutter—both the physical clutter in my home and the mental clutter in my mind. I'm especially focused on those areas that feel disorganized and overwhelming. Can you relate? Last week, I shared an insightful interview with Erica Layne, discussing mindset shifts that can help us declutter our homes in lasting ways. This week, I want to dive into the topic of decluttering our mental spaces. To guide us, I've decided to share a recording of a live online masterclass that I taught last year about overcoming overwhelm. While it’s longer than my usual 30-minute episodes, it does have three takeaways, and I hope you'll find it incredibly valuable. In this episode, you’ll: - Learn about the difference between stress & overwhelm - Hear some strategies you can use if you’re in the midst of overwhelm - Receive some scripts you can use to opt out of commitments that are too much for you Thanks for taking some extra time today, beyond our regular thirty minutes, to learn about overcoming overwhelm! If you are interested in dedicating yourself to a true transformation - going from constant unhealthy overwhelm to more productive stress mixed with a lot more joy and fun - sign up for my Declutter your Motherhood Audio course by the end of January for $50 off with the code NEWYEAR. I'd love to have you with us! With the new year comes a new surge of energy for me to GET MY LIFE IN ORDER! My kids always laugh at me when I get these bursts of motivation because they never last. They roll their eyes and humor me as I declare plans to declutter our home and patiently wait for my resolve to fizzle. Is this cycle familiar to you too? Well, if so, you’re in for a treat. I truly believe that with some mindset shifts and a deeper commitment to our WHY for decluttering our homes, this can be the year that decluttering actually sticks. My guest today, Erica Layne from The Life on Purpose Movement, believes this too. On this week’s episode, Erica will share: - The simple mindset shift that can make it easier to "get to work" when you're feeling overwhelmed by your messy house. - What clutter does (and does NOT) say about you. - The best way to approach decluttering with sentimental items. Are you ready to start the decluttering process and follow through this time? Let’s do this! Plus, if you’re looking to dive deeper into mental decluttering, my Declutter Your Motherhood Course is currently $50 off through the end of January. As we dive into the season of goal-setting and resolutions, I want to start with an episode focused on honoring and understanding our female bodies and how that relates to goal-setting. Because guess what? As women, we are physiologically unable to have the same level of energy and motivation every single day of the month due to our menstrual cycles, and that TRUTH should absolutely change the way that we set goals. We will not be exactly consistent with goals because our bodies are not exactly consistent, and that is okay! In this episode, April Davis of Haus of Vagina educates us on our menstrual cycles and how to align our goals with our cycles, including: 1. The four phases of the menstrual cycle. 2. What to expect from ourselves during each phase. 3. Strategies for aligning our goals and ambitions with our cycle. Tune into the episode to learn more! I’ve also designed a FREE worksheet that recaps April’s awesome information. This is an incredible resource for you or any woman or girl in your life. I wish I had known this stuff decades ago! It’s “the most wonderful time of the year,” but for some of us, it doesn’t necessarily feel like it. I know not everyone relates to this confusing angst during the holidays, but maybe you do. Maybe you put a smile on your face for the parties and events, but inside, you might feel as alone as the Grinch sitting in his cave on top of the hill because who feels down during the holidays? Is your heart just three sizes too small? In today's episode, I'm joined by Dr. Tanmeet Sethi, who shares three tangible ways we can navigate these melancholy feelings during this time of year, including: 1. A simple exercise to soften your melancholy so it doesn’t overpower you. 2. A powerful way to boost your energy and feel more at peace. 3. The single best thing you can do to mother yourself during this season. Listening to Dr. Sethi’s blend of compassion and research feels like a hug for my inner Eeyore! I hope you feel the same way! Feeling overwhelmed by the jingling chaos of the holiday season? You're not alone! The holidays can add a huge load on us moms. Recently, I found myself overwhelmed, so I took my own advice from the Self-Assured Motherhood program: I paused, assessed my mental load, and eliminated what I could. One of those items was this episode, which I entrusted to my wise, capable team members. And, let me tell you, they stepped up and delivered! This week, 4 of my team members - Molly, Christy, Abby, and Emily - share three practical tips for managing the mental load during this busy time of year. Their advice is both realistic and incredibly helpful. Wishing you all the best as you navigate the festive hustle and bustle, my friend! Wouldn’t it be nice if our kids innately felt grateful for all we (and others) do for them? That they naturally expressed gratitude and could see how blessed they are? Certainly, some kids are more predisposed than others, but it’s been my experience, and I’m guessing yours too, that this doesn’t come naturally to most kids. Instead, gratitude is a skill that needs to be taught and practiced repeatedly. So the big question is: how do we teach it? Today’s episode will focus on three actionable, realistic ways to teach your kids gratitude. Click play NOW to jump in! Full full show notes, including a list of takeaways, click here. Our children's reactions are often NOT logical. Their outbursts of emotion sometimes seem ridiculous and outsized, and when we try to "talk some sense into them," it usually makes everything worse. Before we know it, we find ourselves yelling and reacting with big anger, and the whole family spirals into a swamp of dysregulation. Can you relate? 🫣 Believe me, I've been there, and if you have too, you are going to love today's episode with a neurobiological researcher, Dr. Dan Siegel, who explains the brain science behind why children react the way that they do and how understanding the structures and functions of the human brain can help us to become more patient and ultimately effective parents. Do you enjoy traveling, but financial constraints prevent you from visiting some places on your bucket list? If this sounds like you, I’d like to share a strategy I recently learned about: traveling using credit card points. By making a few minor adjustments to the credit cards we use and when, we've earned enough points to fund a vacation for our family of four at no cost! (And that’s without going into debt or carrying a balance!) I learned how to do this from my guest on today’s podcast, Amber Paul. She joins me to share awesome tips, including a simple swap that can earn you five free tickets to Europe (instead of one), the best credit cards to add to your wallet, and how to meet the minimum spending requirements without spending any more money than you usually would! Radical gratitude is a powerful practice to help you through difficult times. But if you’re in the thick of difficult times (which I know many of you are!), you might be tempted to click away right now. And I get why. ❤️🩹 When things are hard, it can often feel impossible to feel gratitude. In fact, during our most trying times, it can even feel insulting if someone suggests that we focus on gratitude! Who wants to be grateful when everything seems overwhelming, difficult, and maybe even hopeless and dark? The suggestion to “look on the bright side” or “find the silver lining” can feel invalidating and dismissive of our deep pain. If this sounds familiar, I send you my deepest love and empathy, and I hope today’s interview on radical gratitude with Dr. Tanmeet Sethi resonates with you. I recently taught a free masterclass all about mom rage. Toward the beginning of the class, I asked the women in attendance to share something that makes them feel angry on a regular basis. One mom shared: “Feeling rejected by my teen who wants nothing to do with me. This is not the mother-daughter relationship I envisioned.” 💔 This comment stopped my breath for a second. How painful for this mom! No wonder she feels angry about it a lot. I'm guessing she feels a lot of other things, too: sadness, despair, loneliness … I’m guessing she feels tired! Tired of the disconnection with her daughter, tired of the feelings of failure, tired of the nagging and conflict in her home. And I'm also guessing she's not alone in all these feelings. Parenting a teenager can feel exhausting, grueling, and just plain hard! If you can relate, today’s conversation with Andee Martineau is for you. Protecting my kids from the dangers in the online world is a high priority for me. My son is 13, and I’m still holding off giving him a phone, even though he insists he’s the only one in eighth grade who doesn’t have one. (And I want to say here that it's okay if you have a different view on what's best for your child, so no judgment on when you decide to make a phone available to them!!) When he does get a phone in the next year or two, he will definitely have limits and filters to help him navigate his phone safely. But unfortunately, we all know that even the most adept filters and limits aren’t foolproof. In fact, the best internet filter of all will come from Noah! The only way I can fully protect him from online danger is to help him develop his own internal filter. My guest, Emily Jones, is a writer, speaker, author, and mother of 5. She and her husband Dave co-founded Family Tech University, which is a movement dedicated to helping parents prepare their children for today's tech in new and powerful ways. Emily shares with us today how to help our kids use technology wisely as they develop their own internal filters. Parenting a child with big emotions, big reactions, and a neurodiverse brain can be a real challenge. \U0001fae0 I know this firsthand because my son Noah has always been spicy and spirited, and he was diagnosed with ADHD at the end of 5th grade. His formal diagnosis has been a huge blessing for our family, as it has given us a way to research ways to support him and to help him understand his own unique brain and body. One of our biggest sources of education has been The Childhood Collective, a website hosted by three moms who are experts in child development. Lori and Mallory are both child psychologists, and Katie is a speech-language pathologist. They offer incredibly helpful online courses, social media content, and a podcast called Shining with ADHD. I was honored to be a guest on their podcast earlier this year, talking about what I have learned in my journey as the parent of a child with ADHD, and they graciously allowed me to re-air the audio from that interview here on 3 in 30. I always get asked who my Self-Assured Motherhood program is designed for - young moms? moms with young kids? stay-at-home moms? My answer is always emphatically: it’s designed for all moms! SAM is for all mothers - all ages, all stages, all walks of life. In fact, I often have the women in my program tell me it should be called Self-Assured Womanhood or Self-Assured Personhood because the principles apply so universally. (However, the acronym SAW and SAP don’t have quite the same ring as SAM. Don’t you agree? 😆) If you’ve been asking yourself if SAM is a good fit for you, you will love my interview with SAM alumni Wanda Opitz. My Self-Assured Motherhood Program is open for enrollment TODAY, and I want you to join! SAM is not like any other parenting education you’ve participated in in the past – where you heard the lessons and felt like you understood them, but then you didn’t actually apply them long-term. This program was developed with your long-term success in mind. And that’s because the SAM program was designed by a teacher - a professionally trained, extremely experienced, and, at the risk of sounding arrogant, very gifted teacher. 🥰 If you've been on the fence about joining SAM, I hope you'll listen in as I explain why this program REALLY works. This bonus excerpt is one I pulled from Eli's full episode that dropped earlier this week. (If you haven't had a chance to listen, I highly recommend it. It's one of the most value-packed conversations I've had on 3 in 30!) Because it was so value-packed, we had to trim it to 30 minutes, and I didn't want you to miss out on this fascinating part of the conversation, so I decided to make it a bonus episode. These thoughts from Eli on co-regulation for parents blew my mind! I mean, I had heard of co-regulation before, but the scientific evidence behind it is fascinating! I had no idea there were nerve fibers that are activated when I caress my child, and these nerve fibers calm my child's heart down! It takes the old adage "If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy" to a whole new level. 🤯 Eli's explanation of the science behind co-regulation helps me understand why it is so vital that moms proactively do soul-care. It literally helps us build a buffer so that we don't dysregulate when our kids are dysregulated. It's so powerful! (By the way, I just did a mini episode on soul-care! Click below to check it out!) We all know how important it is to raise securely attached kids, but how to do it can be the tricky part! It's true what they say about parenting: The days are long but the years are short. I feel like the years are flying by with my two kids, who are both now in double digits, and I often find myself wondering how I can parent them in a way that will keep our bonds strong through their teen years and into adulthood - and in a way that they will thrive in their adult relationships after they leave my care. This is why I've been drawn to the work of therapist and author Eli Harwood, who has dedicated her career to studying research on attachment theory and making it applicable to everyday humans trying to build secure relationships, whether that's the clients in her private practice, the hundreds of thousands who follow her on social media, or the people across the world who read her books. Eli's newest book, Raising Securely Attached Kids, will be released on September 3, 2024, and it was a thrill to have her back on the podcast to discuss this important topic. Here we are! It's the final day of our two-week-long series on how to become more peaceful, confident, and happy in motherhood. I have loved this series, and it's also been a ton of work--more work than I had anticipated! (Though I don't know why I didn't anticipate that airing a podcast episode every weekday for two weeks \U0001fae8 would be a huge challenge. Sometimes things sound easy before you do them, and that was definitely the case with this series!) But, despite the hard work, I'm so glad I persevered to give you a little deep dive into each one of my nine principles of Self-Assured Motherhood. My goal for every woman who listens to my podcast or participates in my SAM program is this: I want you to feel more fully yourself as a result of the work that we do together - more deeply accepting of who you are and more able to nurture the best that's already within you, instead of wishing you could be different or "better." Friends, if you want to do this work with me, I hope you will join my Self-Assured Motherhood program, which opens for enrollment on Monday, September 9th. *** Announcements: Self-Assessment for Moms: Click here to download my FREE self-assessment to go along with each of the 9 principles we'll be discussing through the mini-series. **Everyone who downloads this assessment will receive a special discount for SAM! My kids are headed back to school soon, and they will be doing all sorts of assessments to see how they're doing in math and reading and writing. And this got me thinking: I need to do a series of mini-podcast episodes during this back-to-school season for moms to assess how they are doing, not with balancing equations or diagramming sentences (because I have a feeling most of us would fail those assessments 🥴), but to assess something way more important: our own levels of emotional wellbeing. Just like last week, this week, Monday-Friday, I will be publishing a mini-episode to introduce you to each of the principles I teach in my Self-Assured Motherhood course, a framework I created for overwhelmed moms. Each principle is an important part of emotional well-being and can help you in your personal assessment of how you're doing. Today's principle is: Support Their Struggles. As you go along with this mini-series, you can use this self-assessment I've created to visually assess how you're doing in each of the principles we discuss. I hope you find this mini-series helpful as you take time to consider your own emotional well-being. I'm rooting for you! *** Announcements: Self-Assessment for Moms: Click here to download my FREE self-assessment to go along with each of the 9 principles we'll be discussing through the mini-series. **Everyone who downloads this assessment will receive a special discount for SAM!
