Summary

This time of year, I struggle more with depression. The winter months can be a really hard time - and I know it’s just not me! That’s why I truly feel like it’s important this time of year to talk about mental illness in motherhood.  To give this topic the full focus it deserves, I’m dedicating the next three episodes to focusing on mental health in motherhood. This week, you’ll hear previous episodes I aired with my beloved older sister, Sarah, where we discuss depression in motherhood and how to get help with mental illness. After that, I will air a new episode with Sarah’s husband, Logan, about ways to care for a loved one struggling with mental illness.  In this first episode of the series, we discuss:  One way depression manifests itself that you might not recognize (hint: knowing this might help you not feel so guilty when it hits).  A simple tip to help on those days when depression makes it too hard to even eat.  A helpful rule of thumb to use when deciding which self-care strategy you need most.  For full show notes, including takeaways, click here.  Whether you are struggling with mental illness or you have a loved one who is, I hope you find this series of episodes helpful.  [Free Download ] Guide to Nurturing Yourself when Managing Depression // To support you even further, I’ve created a packet that includes actionable ways to support yourself in depression and how to support a loved one who is struggling, as well as a QR code that links to a private playlist of all of the episodes I’ve released about mental illness.  Whatever battles you’re fighting right now, my friend, I want you to know you’re not alone. *** Announcements:  To receive the packet I created with actionable ways to support yourself or a loved one with mental illness, click here.   Related Episodes: 319: Three Tools I Use to Manage Anxiety and Depression 300: Coping with Illness or Pain as a Mom // Becky and Candace 184: Living Well with Depression & Anxiety // Jenny Showalter Episode Sponsors: Wild Grain: For a limited time, Wild Grain is offering our listeners $30 off your first box plus free croissants in every box when you start a subscription. You're listening to 3 and 30 Takeaways for Moms, and this episode is an encore that originally

0:05.0

aired over five years ago in November 2019, which is actually really hard for me to believe.

Time truly flies, and I've had the privilege to record hundreds of podcast to interview since

0:18.5

that time. But I will say that this conversation remains

0:22.7

one of my all-time favorite and most impactful episodes. This is a conversation with my

0:28.5

beloved older sister Sarah, all about depression and motherhood. And even though this isn't the

0:33.9

most fun topic to talk about, it is so incredibly important, which is why we've

0:39.3

decided to bring back this episode to re-air on the podcast. Winter can be a really hard time for

0:44.9

people emotionally, so I've actually decided to make this a bit of a series over the next two weeks.

0:50.5

This upcoming Thursday will air an encore of part two of this conversation with Sarah as a bonus episode.

0:57.5

And then next Monday, we will be airing a brand new follow-up episode five years later with Sarah's wonderful husband, Logan McKenna.

1:06.3

He'll be sharing his thoughts on how to support a spouse or loved one who is struggling with mental

1:11.5

illness. His takeaways are so heartfelt, poignant, and wise. So I hope you'll not only listen

1:17.4

today, but also come back Thursday and next Monday and listen in to this full mini-series

1:23.5

all about supporting ourselves and our loved ones in seasons of sadness, anxiety, grief, and

1:29.9

emotional turmoil. I do want to mention that this episode briefly mentions suicidal ideation,

1:35.4

so make sure you're in an emotional space to hear that. And if after listening to this episode,

1:40.4

you could use some more ideas and support as you or a loved one navigate struggles

1:44.3

with mental health. I wanted to make sure that you know about a free guide that my team and I created

1:49.2

with our very best ideas, as well as the advice from many of our podcast guests, on how to manage

mental illness day to day. Within this guide, there's also a playlist of every episode we've ever aired on 3 and 30
