Summary

If you ever feel at a loss for how to support your partner, friend, or family member who struggles with mental illness, this special episode is for you. My brother-in-law Logan has been a loving and sturdy support for my older sister Sarah through decades of mental health challenges. Over their 20 years of marriage, he has learned a lot about how best to support someone who is struggling, and he's joining me in this episode to share those insights with us, including: - What to do when frustration creeps in and it feels like your loved one isn’t “trying hard enough.” - How to give yourself permission to feel joy, even when your loved one is feeling down. - A mantra to lean on when everything feels heavy and hope is running low. For full show notes, including takeaways, click here.  Be sure to also listen to the episodes with my beloved sister Sarah, where we discuss depression in motherhood and how to get help with mental illness. If you’re caring for someone battling mental illness, I want to take a moment to say thank you. Thank you for being there and for giving of your compassion and love. Please remember to take care of yourself too. You deserve support and help through this, too. Thank you. I'm your host, Rachel Nielsen. I'm so glad you're here. Back in 2019, I interviewed my sister, Sarah, about how to live with and get help for mental

illness. And last week, I re-aired those episodes because I think they are so incredibly

important. Well, back when I first recorded

with Sarah, I asked her husband Logan if he wanted to come on the podcast as well to offer his

insights into supporting a spouse who's struggling with mental health. At the time, he graciously

declined, saying that he didn't think he had much tangible advice to offer, but that he'd let me

know if that changed.

Well, almost five years later, I recently got this text message from him. He said,

You asked me a long time ago about doing an episode on your podcast about living with and caring for people with mental illness. At the time, I had no idea what I would say. I've thought about it

off and on since then. The other day I was thinking about it, and I realized that I probably do have three things.

I thought I should offer if you still have interest.

1:48.9

No pressure.

1:49.6

I certainly don't feel driven to do it.

And I'm not sure if you went on to do a similar episode already, but I just wanted to let you know that I'd be up for it if you're still interested.
