Summary

After my daughter Sally was born, I stopped sleeping. During the day, I had a hard time looking at my baby because I didn’t feel like I could take care of myself, let alone her. Up to this point, I had managed my natural melancholy okay on my own, but after a terrifying panic attack, I reached out for professional help.  I attribute my quick decision to get help to my older sister, Sarah, who has fought mental illness since she was a young teenager.  This time of year can be especially difficult for many emotionally. That’s why I’m dedicating three episodes to the focus on mental health in motherhood. On Monday, you heard Sarah and I discuss depression in motherhood. Today’s episode is focused on how to get professional help. Next week, you’ll hear from Sarah’s husband, Logan, about how to support a loved one who’s struggling with mental illness.  In this second episode of the series, we discuss:  - A practical tip to help you stay honest with your doctor & therapist - A few helpful thoughts if you’re scared to try medication.  - Two kinds of therapy you might not have thought about before.  For full show notes, including takeaways, click here.  Whether you are struggling with mental illness or you have a loved one who is, I hope you find this series of episodes helpful.  [Free Download ] Guide to Nurturing Yourself when Managing Depression // To support you even further, I’ve created a packet that includes actionable ways to support yourself in depression and how to support a loved one who is struggling, as well as a QR code that links to a private playlist of all of the episodes I’ve released about mental illness.  Whatever battles you’re fighting right now, my friend, I want you to know you’re not alone.  *** Announcements:  To receive the guide I created with actionable ways to support yourself or a loved one with mental illness, click here.   Related Episodes: 414: Feeling Low Right Now? 3 Tools to Help You Cope // Sarah McKenna 319: Three Tools I Use to Manage Anxiety and Depression 184: Living Well with Depression & Anxiety // Jenny Showalter Let’s Connect: Join me on Instagram! You're listening to 3 and 30 Takeaways for Moms, and this episode is an encore that originally

0:04.7

aired over five years ago in November 2019 when I sat down with my older sister Sarah to discuss

0:11.8

depression and mental illness in motherhood. We had so much to talk about that we split the

0:17.0

episode into two parts, and I hope you were able to catch part one on Monday, where

0:21.6

Sarah and I discussed what depression can look like, because it's not always just sadness.

0:26.9

We also talked about some basic soul care that can help you to get through an intense

0:31.7

season of mental struggle. In this second half of our conversation, Sarah and I discuss

0:36.5

how to get professional help for your mental illness, which I know can feel overwhelming when you're in the midst of a difficult time.

0:42.9

So I truly hope this episode will be supportive and encouraging for you.

0:47.1

I do want to give you a heads up that we mentioned suicidal ideation in this episode.

0:51.5

So make sure you're in an okay emotional space to hear about that.

0:55.2

I think it's so important to acknowledge that these kinds of scary thoughts happen when we

0:59.7

aren't doing well emotionally. And it's nothing to be ashamed of. It's just a sign to reach out for help.

1:05.4

I also wanted to make sure that you know about this upcoming Monday's episode, which will be a new interview,

1:12.0

and we'll get to hear from Sarah's husband, Logan, all about how to support a spouse or

1:17.0

loved one who's struggling with mental health. I felt like that would be a great episode to

1:21.1

air on Valentine's Day week because real love goes far beyond a box of chocolates and a dozen

1:26.4

roses. It's about showing up for each other

1:29.3

in our darkest and heaviest seasons while also figuring out how to take care of ourselves.

1:34.8

And this is not easy. Logan has some really heartfelt and wise takeaways for how to get through

1:40.8

times when your spouse or child is not doing well emotionally.

1:44.6

So stay tuned for that next Monday.
