It was the summer of 1979. The last vestiges of the 1970s were set to expire and welcome in the rip and roar era of the 80s.  This chapter takes place in Torrance, California, a coastal town where the air smells faintly of salt and sun-baked asphalt.  The streets glow soft orange beneath the high pressure sodium streetlights. Sixteen-year-old Lucinda Lynn Schaefer walks those streets often, the kind of girl who never seems out of place anywhere.  Her friends call her Cindy. No credits this week because I didn't want to delay this episode any longer. For their plan to work, Larry Bittaker knew they couldn’t rely on just any car. They needed something bigger… something that could trap a victim inside. In February of 1979, with money from Norris, he bought it—a silver-gray 1977 GMC Vandura. The van was windowless on one side, with a sliding door large enough to swallow someone whole. Bittaker later admitted that when he first saw that door, he knew. They could pull up close to a girl, slide it open, and drag her inside without anyone noticing. The pair gave the vehicle a name. To them, it wasn’t just a van. Date: July 1, 2021 Location: The Halderson's basement Bart and Krista's lifeless bodies are sprawled across the cold cement floor. Various blood soaked tools are strewn about the room. Hedge clippers, scissors, a keyhole saw, a hacksaw, and an axe. The air is thick with death and desperation. Chandler is bent over his father's half naked body, hacksaw in hand, as he begins the slow and methodical process of sawing through both of Bart's femurs. The ridges of the blade begin their incision into the bone, then halt abruptly, leaving a clue. One that would tell investigators exactly what tools Chandler used that night. A jailhouse phone call. An interesting phenomena in its own right. The prison industrial complex in the USA generates an estimated 1.3 billions per year. In March of 2020, when the Dane County Jail stopped all in-person visitations due to the rapid spread of the Covid-19 virus they implemented a policy in which every inmate was allotted two 15-minute phone calls per day. No matter if it's free or charged, if you happen to be on either end of a jailhouse phone call you should be aware this is not a normal phone call. That’s because there’s an inherent irony in this kind of call. Especially one that takes place pre-trial—like the one you hear at the beginning of this episode between Chandler Halderson and his girlfriend Catherine. And the irony is this.
