Chapter 1. The gruesome death of Atavia de Silva.

On June 30, 2013, what was supposed to be just another weekend soccer match in a quiet rural

town in Brazil turned into one of the most shocking and gruesome displays of violence the

sports world has ever seen. The town was called Piu de Ziu, and it holds just around 20,000

people. This wasn't a championship game. There were no TV crews, no major sponsors, and no

roaring stadium crowd.

It was just a friendly Sunday afternoon soccer match on a dusty field, surrounded by family,

friends, and neighbors, people looking for a bit of entertainment, some local pride,

maybe even a cold drink under the fading afternoon sun.

But by the end of that day, two men would be dead.

One stabbed, the other butchered, and a soccer field would be stained with blood.

The referee's name was Atavio De Silva.

He was just 20 years old.

According to reports, tensions began to simmer when De Silva made the controversial decision to eject a player from the match. That was 31-year-old Joseigneur de Santos-Abreu.

The ejection followed a heated verbal altercation, and some say Hosseinier had physically confronted the young ref, though the exact nature

of the aggression remains unclear.
