Have you wondered if that wine might actually be making motherhood…harder? Maybe you’ve questioned your relationship with alcohol, but you don’t want to go to AA and spend time in dark church basements. The Sober Mom Life is for YOU. Suzanne (@suzannewarye) is sharing all about her sobriety and what she’s learned in the 5+ years since saying farewell to alcohol. She’ll also have funny, open, honest conversations with other moms who have chosen to live an alcohol-free life.
We are smack dab in the middle of December and I don’t know about you, but during this season I often feel like I am the only mom coming up short in a world full of moms who have everything together. It’s times like these that I am so grateful for my sobriety. My sobriety is deeply rooted in motherhood, so today I’m going to share a bit about my parenting philosophy - Half Ass. Whole Heart. The goal of parenting isn’t to strive for Pinterest perfection. It’s to be a safe, steady place for our kids. And for me, sobriety is the key. Community makes all the difference. Giving up alcohol originally felt to Mary Alice Stephens like leaving so many things behind - ‘Fun Mary’, date nights with her husband, friendships that centered around wine, and a father who expressed his love through alcohol. Now fourteen years sober, Mary Alice can look back and confidently say that the leap was so worth facing her fears. Mary is the author of the new book Uncorked: A Memoir of Letting Go and Starting Over. In the book and in our conversation she shares the wisdom she has gleaned from almost a decade and a half of sobriety, the things she still reaches for in her sobriety toolkit to stay confidently sober in her current life, and wonderful advice on how to navigate your first sober holiday season. The biggest lightbulb moment for Mary was the realization that her behavior wasn’t ‘her’. It was the alcohol. Placing the blame squarely where it deserved to be gave Mary the freedom to make a different choice, and she is not looking back! So much of my sobriety is rooted in gratitude. Not inauthentic gratitude that feels forced, but the true deeply rooted gratitude I feel as I’m present for each beautiful everyday moment of life. With each passing year I find that my well of gratitude deepens. And the women I’ve interviewed who’ve been sober for 10, 15, 20 years? They’ve confirmed it - your gratitude in sobriety will only continue to grow. It does not max out. So if you’re in early sobriety and you’re not feeling the gratitude yet? Keep going. You have taken a brave leap of faith, and it is going to get better, and better, and better. Does sobriety during the upcoming holiday season feel overwhelming? Sign up for my 10-Day Holiday Series! One of the biggest things I leaned on in early sobriety was yoga - especially sessions led by Kristin McGee. She was instrumental in helping me move through that first stage of sobriety, and today she’s here!! Kristin will share with us the importance of connecting with your body in order to tap into your inner voice. Then, we’ll talk about dating without alcohol, the wild reality of alcohol in the wellness space, the power of navigating grief through movement, and her transition away from Peloton to start her own brand. Your sobriety isn't a committee decision. It's OK if your family and friends don't understand.Yes, it's scary. If your family has always bonded over alcohol, it can feel lonely to be sober during the holiday season. It’s a challenging shift to put yourself first and not people-please to make others comfortable during the holidays. But believe me, you can do it. Today, I'll discuss how you can still be involved in holiday festivities, how to invite your family members to support you, and ideas for starting new traditions that don’t include alcohol. Registered Nurse and Sobriety Coach Kate Vitela is here to remind you that no matter where you are on your sobriety journey, you are always allowed to change. Kate shares the story of how alcohol became a way of life for her as a young nurse and how her attempt at switching to cannabis wound up unraveling her life in a way that led to full sobriety. She also shares about her experiences with AA. Originally a program that changed her life, Kate felt after a couple of years of sobriety that she no longer wanted to identify as an ‘alcoholic’. This choice led her to unexpected backlash that led her to step away from the program and develop her own. Kate is now a sober coach and sober podcaster focusing on a message that blends science, spirituality, real stories, and humor to create a recovery approach that’s authentic and empowering. There’s a problematic message in our society that tells us that we only need to quit drinking if our drinking looks ‘that bad’. You know the kind - Meg Ryan in When A Man Loves a Woman or Nicholas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas. This message can cause so many challenges for women on their sobriety journeys. It can make them second guess themselves about whether or not they need to quit drinking, even as their personal relationship with alcohol becomes more and more negative. But what if you reframed this message? What if you stopped asking if you were ‘that bad’, and started asking if alcohol was that bad? How would this change your perspective? Fellow Wisconsinite and sober coach Heather Lowe loved the way alcohol made her feel from a very young age. She kept her fears that she might have a problematic relationship with alcohol under wraps for decades, until a flurry of life changes and tragedies led to her begin to ‘drink her grief’ instead of feeling it. Heather wanted to blame everything but alcohol for the ways in which she felt like she was losing her grip, so much so that she began to try ‘sober experiments’ to prove to herself that alcohol wasn’t the problem. She was surprised to find, though, that she was feeling better and better during her periods of sobriety. Quitting for real felt terrifying. A longtime party girl, Heather couldn’t imagine losing friends through such a big life change. The honest truth was that she did lose friends, but she developed a much more important friendship along the way - a deep and meaningful friendship with herself. Now seven years sober, Heather works with women in all stages of sobriety to help them navigate their own sober journeys. She wants you to know: There is so much potential in sobriety. Today’s Real Sober Mom, Jennifer, is celebrating one year of sobriety! To celebrate, she is coming full circle and telling her story here on the podcast after feeling so supported by other women who have shared their stories in the same space. Alcohol found its way into Jennifer’s life through her older brother, and as they became adults a culture of partying became central to her family dynamic. This family dynamic weaved its way through her relationship with alcohol, even as she navigated liver issues in her twenties and cancer in her thirties. Jennifer began to question her relationship with alcohol after she completed treatment for colon cancer. Once she realized that she was a ‘gray area drinker’ she began to explore quit lit and hired a sober coach, but it took some time for sobriety to fully ‘click’ for her. The Sober Mom Life community served as a major turning point for Jennifer as she realized for the first time that she wasn’t alone. With a year of sobriety under her belt, Jennifer shares about how sobriety has impacted her family dynamic, and how finding new ‘tools’ to cope in place of alcohol has made all the difference in her life. Texas born Lauren knew how to operate without alcohol. Though she was a heavy drinker in high school, she learned early on through her mother’s cancer journey that sometimes sobriety was necessary in order to attend to life’s challenges. It wasn’t until she was a mom of two that alcohol became a crutch that she consistently leaned on. Lauren chose to leave her career when she had her second child, and the resulting identity crisis she experienced was jarring. She turned to alcohol because it was one of the few things that helped her feel like herself. When Covid hit, alcohol became even more central to her life, but she continued to feel worse and worse. She had a turning point when she listened to the classic Huberman Lab podcast about alcohol’s effects. For the first time she wondered: what if alcohol was the problem? Twenty-six days of sobriety seemed to show her the truth. She felt so much better sober, in every way. A girl’s trip at the end of her sober stretch resulted in major FOMO, though, and alcohol slipped back into her life. This began a years long teeter totter of sober curiosity until she found Fresh 30 within the Sober Mom Life Cafe. The small group experience gave her the support she needed to feel seen and understood. Lauren has stayed sober since last summer, and has been a regular in the Cafe, Fresh 30, and on the retreat. She is so grateful for the support she’s received in this community! Katie and I are back with another installment of SobrieTEA, where we spill the tea about our favorite escape: Bravo and Reality TV! Today we’re talking about Scheana’s book, My Good Side. We highly recommend it! Then we’ll move to The Valley Reunion Part 1 and discuss the great news that Jax is leaving the show! We’ll discuss the why behind his departure and what can happen when reality plots stop being fun and start getting scary. Plus, we’ll touch on why Janet’s 'adderall and pilates’ comment was so problematic. Next up is The Real Housewives of Miami. What a great season! We’ll get into the screen shotted text message powerpoint, the narcissism party, and how a life of partying has likely contributed to Peter’s unexpected aging. And finally we’ll give our thoughts on the web of fights that are bubbling up on the Real Housewives of Orange County. Plus! Suzanne and Katie share their Bravolebrities Mount Rushmores. Last week I recorded the audiobook version of my book, and you guys, it was one of the most intimidating experiences of my life! I had been dreading the recording experience, and it made me second guess even writing the book in the first place. I had so much self doubt - could I do this? Would I fail? Would I die of embarrassment?! I did it anyway - I faced my fear and I think it turned out great. Today I’ll talk about what it took to get me through my fear and how I continue to work through the feelings of fear and self doubt that arise whenever I try new things. I want you to know - don’t wait until you’re confident to try something you feel called to do. Do it scared. You will make it to the other side, and you will be so proud of yourself for doing the hard thing! 25 Lessons for 25 Year Old Me (From my Substack) Join Us on The Sober Mom Life Retreat February 26 - March 1, 2026 in Mexico! https://thesobermomlife.com/2025/07/11/the-sober-mom-life-retreat-is-here/ Are you looking for community in sobriety? Real Sober Mom Julie grew up in a family where, throughout the years, alcohol became increasingly present. As a young adult, her mother’s relationship with alcohol had become so difficult for Julie to bear that she asked her mother to leave one day after she came to visit her. As Julie became a mom, alcohol found its way more deeply into her own life through Mommy Wine Culture. While she never experienced a ‘rock bottom’, something started to feel increasingly off. She felt like an bad mom and less and less like herself. After opening up to her husband about her challenge it all came into focus - she did not want to be a mom who drinks, and she did not want her daughters to have a mom who drank. Quitting, however, was a challenge. Julie attempted dry Januarys and dry weeks, but she could never make it very far. Community ended up being the game changer that Julie needed. She has now achieved 10 months of consistent sobriety with regular support from the Sober Mom Life Cafe! Julie is so happy to be able to give her daughters a childhood with a sober mom, and she is so grateful to the community of other sober moms who have made her feel supported in the way she needs to maintain her sobriety! Growing up in Ireland, Aisling came to understand that having an ‘alcohol problem’ required a really high bar. Either you were a raging alcoholic, or your relationship with alcohol was fine and not worth examining. As a child, though, Aisling disagreed. She found drunk people terrifying. Looking back? She thinks that young Aisling had it right. Today Aisling shares her sobriety story, starting as a college student who didn’t make it through school due to her habit, and culminating as a new mom who felt buried with shame each time that alcohol threw her off track. Aisling believes that sobriety is her superpower. It allows her to show up as her best self in every corner of her life and brings so much joy to her days. She wants you to know that this reality is available for you, too! Follow Aisling on Instagram! You can read Aisling’s story in my upcoming book! Luc Zoratto is the creator of @marathon2sobriety. He is nine years sober, a marathon runner, and a 1-on-1 and group sober coach. Luc tells the story of how his ‘work hard, play hard’ mindset led him to a life that was ruled by alcohol and cocaine. He’ll detail the intense shame he felt in becoming sober, and how he eventually overcame it to be a proud public voice in the community! Then, we’ll talk about how important it is for him to be a sober dad for his daughter after growing up in a home negatively affected by alcohol, and his viewpoint on the fact that his wife still drinks. I just got home from a 3 day trip to Las Vegas. Even when I was a drinker I wasn’t a Vegas girl, so I was curious what the experience would be like to be there sober. Kristi Tanner is a sober influencer, sober coach, the owner of Sober Social, a wonderful NA bottle shop in Madison, Wisconsin, and a meeting host inside the Sober Mom Life Cafe. It is a life path that she never could’ve predicted for herself and it required her to search for the answer to a big question: who was she without alcohol? Alcohol had become central to Kristi’s perceived identity. By the time she hit rock bottom in 2019, the single mom of four believed that she could not find any other way to get relief from her pain and unhappiness. But after a divorce, stints in rehab, a psych ward, detox, two DUIs and a night in jail, she had a terrifying realization - if she didn’t get sober she was going to lose her children, and she would deserve it. Kristi remembered that she had loved living before she ever loved alcohol, and she had to find her way back to that feeling. It was then that she raised her white flag, accepted that she needed rehab, and began to search for who she was beneath the alcohol that was ruining her life. Since that day in 2019 Kristi’s life has been turned upside down in the most beautiful way. She is now over 5 years sober, she has learned that there are better ways to handle her pain, and she has regained access to her joy. She has been open and curious about life without alcohol and has deeply found herself within a sober life. As the daughter of a high school principal, Jessica felt a lot of pressure to stay in line. She never drank in high school, and even abstained through her freshman year of college. As the persona of ‘principal's daughter’ wore off, though, alcohol became a regular part of her life. This became challenging when Jessica moved back to her hometown and took a job in education. Always worried about her public image, she kept her wits about her when drinking in public and began to prefer drinking at home. As she became a mom and shifted her career to work from home, drinking at home became a nightly habit. Jessica and her husband moved to a lake home and began to throw regular parties. This ‘‘weekend warrior’ phase felt so fun - until it wasn’t. She increasingly found herself starting the week hungover and on the back foot. It was at this moment that Instagram dropped one of Suzanne’s videos onto Jessica’s feed - a video simply telling her that she was allowed to not drink. This message hit on a feeling that Jessica hadn’t been able to voice, and something within her began to shift. On New Year's Eve it all came to a head and Jessica followed her instinct - she didn’t want to drink that night. She felt more present with her family as they celebrated and made a big realization - sobriety was her new path. Sobriety has opened incredible new avenues for her! She is now a certified life coach and has begun to offer focused support to high achieving women interested in sobriety! Alcohol wasn’t present in Courtney’s childhood, so when she was offered champagne by friends at a holiday when she was fifteen, she had no knowledge of how it would affect her. She only knew that it was ‘forbidden’, and what 15 year old wouldn’t want to try a forbidden thing? The cozy sense of warmth that overcame her was so appealing. After that day, alcohol easily slipped into her life. Courtney experienced a series of red flags around her drinking through the years, but she ignored them. She clearly didn’t have a ‘problem’, so there was no reason to consider her relationship with alcohol too closely. Yet, as she became a mother, alcohol began to take up more and more space in her brain, and her relationship with it became more and more uncomfortable. An unexpected third pregnancy that resulted in a miscarriage served as a wakeup call. She was given an opportunity to truly feel her emotions around alcohol, and to create new habits that required sobriety to enjoy. It felt so good, and she became fiercely protective of these new life choices. At that point, she began moderating and paying close attention to how alcohol made her feel until one day at a brewery it became completely clear: Alcohol was not serving her. In fact, alcohol was taking joy from her life. She was done. Courtney has recently reached 100 days of sobriety! Are you looking for community in sobriety? Join us in the The Sober Mom Life Cafe! Sarah believed a myth: Alcohol Makes Things Special. She believed that alcohol was a special ingredient to make things fun ever since middle school when she took her first drink at a slumber party. This belief followed her through college and into adulthood, and because she didn’t experience intense hangovers or blackouts, she never gave the belief a second thought. Once Sarah started having children, however, her experience of alcohol began to change. She noticed the sluggish, brain foggy nature of hangovers more than she ever had before. More worrisome for her, though, was her realization that drinking made her more aggressive. She wondered - did she like herself better when she was sober? Sobriety didn’t seem like an option, though. How could she enjoy a sober life when alcohol was the ingredient that made things special? In 2022, Sarah tried Dry January and realized that something about sobriety worked for her. Thus began her two year journey of drinking with the blinders off, until she fully quit after having a surprising realization: She’d enjoyed her one sober night on her birthday trip more than any of the nights that she drank. Slowly, Sarah started sharing her sobriety in public. The response was inspiring. So many women approached her wanting to know more, sharing their own worries about alcohol, and asking for advice. This fuels Sarah to live her sober life loudly! At six months sober, Sarah’s mom passed away unexpectedly. The experience rocked her world, and she was so grateful that her sobriety was well intact. It helped her truly sit in her grief instead of reaching for the distraction of alcohol. Check out Sarah’s article about sobriety on Indianapolis Moms! Are you looking for community in sobriety? Real Sober Mom Kim is three months sober! Today, she’s giving us a peek into this extremely important phase of sobriety. Kim experienced postpartum anxiety with her second child. During her recovery, her therapist recommended that a glass of wine a night was no big deal if it helped her wind down, and Kim’s daily drinking began. Despite the fact that Kim was able to moderate, her life began to revolve around her nightly drink. The relief she found in the ritual eventually started to blot out other things in her life. As a therapist, Kim knew she was using drinking was a coping mechanism. Recently, though, it became too much. She found herself intoxicated on the floor of her living room during a night with friends and she asked herself - how would she feel if her kids came home and found her like this? She did not like the answer, and that night, she decided to quit. The next day she joined the first meeting she could find online and her sobriety journey began. The meeting wasn’t a perfect fit, but it was good enough to help support her and keep her going until she found the Cafe. She is so glad she went. At 3 months sober, Kim’s sobriety feels hard, but incredible! She shares about the unexpected anxiety she felt during her first sober month, how it dissipated, and the gorgeous glimmers that are now coming through in her sober life. If you’re struggling with early sobriety, Kim wants to encourage you to keep going! Are you looking for community in sobriety? Join us in the The Sober Mom Life Cafe! Our resident scientist, Gill Tietz of SoberPowered, is back on the pod to help us understand the recent US Surgeon General’s report on the link between cancer and alcohol consumption. This link is something that we in the sobriety space have known for a long time, but it is the first time that the government has publicly announced the connection. We’ll talk about how this report might change people’s drinking habits, how alcohol and cancer are related, and even how your body heals as your years of sobriety progress. Plus, Gill and I will share how our five year sober-versaries have felt for each of us! To hear more from Gill, check out The SoberPowered Podcast! As a fitness professional, Hollie Nicholson always kept alcohol out of her weekdays, but those weekends of drinking still took their toll until, in 2019, she started asking questions. Despite embodying health in many aspects of her life, Hollie faced a personal challenge with alcohol—and one day, she decided she had enough. Every weekend, amidst living a life filled with healthy habits, alcohol was still a part. For the next six years, Hollie drank with the blinders off. She noticed how inconsistent moderation success could be, she learned about the true impacts that alcohol could have on her body and mind, and she felt how good she could feel through stints of sobriety. But still, a question remained: how could you live a full sober life? In May of 2024, shortly after she turned 40, Hollie woke up after a night of drinking with severe anxiety and she asked herself - what if she could live her next decade totally different than her last? At that moment, she had a lot of questions but she knew one thing - she was getting sober. Inspired by the Sober Mom Life community, she embraced the idea that it’s entirely okay to let go of alcohol—no dramatic reasons needed. The Cafe has given Hollie such a sense of support and community. She’s even experienced an incredible connection story with another member that she tells on the pod!
