In 2024, 13-year-old middle schooler Savannah Copeland was stabbed to death by a local 15-year-old boy. Using the tracking app Life360, her parents were able to track her phone which helped in leading them towards her location on a trail in the woods. Sarah Stern was a 19-year-old college student living in Neptune City, New Jersey, when, in December 2016, she suddenly vanished. Her disappearance sparked immediate concern, where it was unknown whether she took her life, ran away, or was met with foul play. Through speaking with her best friend, Liam McAtasney, investigators thought it might be plausible that she took her life or ran away, considering he was telling them how unhappy Sarah was and that she was planning on fleeing to Canada to get away from her father. However, a few weeks after she disappeared, a friend of Liam’s came forward to the police that he believed Liam may have killed her and staged her disappearance. A sting operation was conducted, and within hours, they retrieved a videotaped confession from Liam, who explained, in detail, how he murdered Sarah with the help of his friend Preston over some money that Sarah had found a few months prior. This confession led to the arrests of both Liam and Preston, and Preston ultimately agreed to a deal where he would testify against Liam in exchange for a lesser sentence. Both men are behind bars, and unfortunately, Sarah’s body has never been recovered from the water where they tossed her body. On June 4, 2019, longtime friends Carnell Sledge and Katherine Brown were out walking at the Rocky River Reservation in Ohio. They had sat down on a bench along the river when they were suddenly shot dead. April Lynn Holt was a mother of two, living outside of Nashville, Tennessee, working hard to create a good life for herself and her family. TikTok was a huge passion of hers, and she began making content back in the pandemic and had garnered over 200,000 followers. Her content was mainly surrounding her family, her faith, and lifting other people up. She was really big on manifestations and elevating your life, so her content was a reflection of that. Her content also centered around her husband, Donovan Holt. However, in 2021 the two of them separated. It was an amicable decision, but eventually they decided to give it another go. But in July of 2023, April realized she no longer wanted to be with him. So that month she asked him for a formal divorce. 2 weeks later, her 7 year old son found her with a plastic bag duct taped to her head in their bathroom. Three days later she died. From the beginning, April’s mom Jamie knew there was more to the story, and she was right. Aniah Blanchard was a 19-year-old college student living in Auburn, Alabama, when on October 23, 2019, she never returned home. Despite dropping off her brother and telling him she was headed back to her apartment, she never arrived. Then, odd messages to her roommate started coming through, and by the next day, it was clear that she’d never made it back. Friends and family joined in on the search, and two days later, her car was found abandoned 50 miles away. There was enough blood inside of her vehicle that investigators determined foul play had occurred. Over the following weeks, three men ended up getting arrested in connection with her abduction, but only one of those men, Ibraheem Yazeed, was determined to be responsible for her actual murder. About a month later, Aniah’s body was found, and despite overwhelming evidence to suggest Ibraheem murdered her, he has yet to face trial in part because of the pandemic and also in part due to our slow justice system. Sierra Mae LaMar was a 15-year-old high school student living in Morgan Hill, California with her mom and her mom’s boyfriend when, completely unexpectedly, she disappeared. Though at first the police thought she may have run away, due to her being unhappy with living in Morgan Hill, evidence quickly suggested otherwise. Over the course of a few days, her cell phone and personal belongings were found, which suggested that she had been taken against her own will. And that is exactly what happened. In the early hours of March 4, 2024, college student Caleb Harris was awake with his roommates, meeting their new dog, playing with her outside, and taking her out for a walk. Caleb stayed up later while his roommates went to bed. He messaged a friend, ordered food delivery, and then disappeared. The following morning when his roommates saw that all of his belongings were still at home, his food untouched, and his car in the driveway, they reported him missing. Update: On the evening of June 24th, human remains were discovered in a water lift station in Corpus Christi not far from Caleb’s apartment. At this time, CCPD says there is no confirmation that the remains are connected to Caleb’s disappearance, but a medical examiner will ultimately make that determination. Because there has been no formal identification, I ask that we do not speculate and keep Caleb’s family in our thoughts at this time. In June 2003, five-year-old LeeAnna Warner suddenly went missing after going off to play with a friend. Even after the entire town got involved with the search effort, there was no break in the case; no one could find the little girl. Susana Morales was 16 years old, living in Norcross, Georgia when one night she suddenly disappeared. July 26th, 2022 was a seemingly normal evening, and Susana spent a few hours that night a block away from her house with a friend, at her friend’s apartment. This was something she did often as it was less than a 10-minute walk from her house. But when she never came home that night, her family began to worry. She was reported missing the following morning, but it wasn’t until early February of 2023 that they got answers. On February 6th, Susana’s skeletal remains were found 20 miles from her home, and evidence left at this location led police officers to her killer, fellow police officer Miles Bryant. Lauren Dunne Astley was 18 years old and had her whole life ahead of her. In the fall of 2011 she was planning on attending Elon University for college, but not before spending her last summer at home in Massachusetts with her friends. But that all changed on July 3rd, 2011, when Nathaniel Fujita, her recent ex-boyfriend, strangled her to death in his garage. His motive? Their breakup. On March 7, 2013, he was found guilty and convicted of first-degree murder.
