The Cine-Files

On this week's episode of The Cine-Files, Steve Morris and John Rocha offer up their overdue tribute to the late and incredibly great Diane Keaton by revisiting 1977's 'Annie Hall'. The film stars Keaton and Woody Allen who also co-wrote and directed the movie. A satirical romantic comedy-drama with Allen as Alvy Singer, who tries to figure out the reasons for the failure of his relationship with the eponymous female lead, Annie Hall, a role Allen wrote specifically for Keaton. The film was nominated for the Big Five Academy Awards, winning four: the Academy Award for Best Picture, two for Allen (Best Director and, with Marshall Brickman, Best Original Screenplay), and Best Actress for Keaton who also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress that year. It ranks 31st on AFI's list of the 100 greatest films in American cinema. The film's screenplay was also named the funniest ever written by the Writers Guild of America in its list of the "101 Funniest Screenplays". It's also regarded by critics as a landmark "transitional" film in Allen's career, moving his work from more "accessible" and surreal parody towards more "naturalistic" comic filmmaking. On this week's episode of The Cine-Files, Steve Morris and John Rocha finish off their time in the land of Oz and head back to Kansas with Part 3 of their exploration of the beloved classic WIZARD OF OZ in honor of the newly release film 'WICKED FOR GOOD' from Universal Pictures. The 1939 film from director Victor Fleming stars Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Billie Burke, and Margaret Hamilton. Based on the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, the film focuses on a Kansas farm girl Dorothy Gale (Garland) who is transported to the magical land of Oz by tornado, where she must journey to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard and find her way home. This MGM musical features a screenplay from Noel Langley, Florence Ryerson, and Edgar Allan Woolf and music from Harold Arlen and adapted by Herbert Stothart, with lyrics by Edgar "Yip" Harburg. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, winning Best Original Song for "Over the Rainbow" and Best Original Score for Stothart. It was ranked second in Variety's inaugural 100 Greatest Movies of All Time list published in 2022. It was among the top ten in the 2005 British Film Institute (BFI) list and is on the BFI's updated list of 50 Films to be Seen by the Age of 15 released in May 2020. On this episode of The Cine-Files, Steve Morris and John Rocha finish off their trip back to 1983 with Part 4 of their exploration of Brian De Palma's SCARFACE starring Al Pacino. A remake of the 1932 film from director Howard Hawks which starred Paul Muni and was based on the 1930 novel. This version tells the story of Cuban refugee Tony Montana (Pacino), who arrives in Miami during the Mariel boatlift and goes from low level lieutenant with his best friend Manny (Bauer) by his side to powerful drug lord. And after a power struggle with an even more ruthless drug lord, he meets a bloody end in iconic fashion. The film co-stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Steven Bauer, Robert Loggia, F.
