Summary

On this episode of The Cine-Files, Steve Morris and John Rocha finish off their trip back to 1983 with Part 4 of their exploration of Brian De Palma's SCARFACE starring Al Pacino. A remake of the 1932 film from director Howard Hawks which starred Paul Muni and was based on the 1930 novel. This version tells the story of Cuban refugee Tony Montana (Pacino), who arrives in Miami during the Mariel boatlift and goes from low level lieutenant with his best friend Manny (Bauer) by his side to powerful drug lord. And after a power struggle with an even more ruthless drug lord, he meets a bloody end in iconic fashion. The film co-stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Steven Bauer, Robert Loggia, F. Murray Abraham, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Steve and John go thru the movie scene by scene and break down the direction, acting, storylines, cinematography, score, action sequences and more.

And Steve, I can't believe this has gone over, gone into four parts. There's so much action in this movie.

0:34.1

I didn't think it would drag into four parts. And I didn't anticipate that we would have so much to say about this movie. So I want to say right off the bat,

0:42.5

thank you to all of our listeners and even some of our people who are new to the show for

0:49.8

putting up with us dealing with this film for four parts. And I hope we've entertained you

0:54.7

and you've enjoyed the process because I get sensitive when we move past three parts.

0:59.5

Certain films demanded other films surprise us with it like Sideways did earlier this year

1:03.9

when it went multiple parts. So I just wanted to put that out there before we wrap up

1:08.8

our conversation and our exploration of Scarface. So it's funny that you mention this because what people don't know is, A, I always try to cut down all of our shows as short as I possibly can make them. It's not like we're just being self-indulgent or that's not our plan. But the thing, this is where I've kind of come to on the cinefiles, which I don't know that I've said it to you quite in this way.

1:29.7

But I've kind of gone like, you know what?

1:31.4

I feel like we are doing the exhaustive soup to nuts exploration of whatever film we're doing, which means that however long it takes.

1:39.9

That's how long it takes.

1:41.4

You know?

1:42.2

So I'm cool with it if the conversation is good, and I've certainly enjoyed this conversation.

1:47.6

And I really, yeah, and I really hope everyone who supports us on patreon.com slash the

1:51.9

Cinefiles as well as Apple Podcast is enjoying the conversation because you are what makes the

1:57.0

cinefiles possible.

1:58.1

Thank you all for that.

1:59.4

And if you haven't checked it out, you can listen to our cinefile shorts, which we do every single week, as well as get ad-free versions of the show. And there's a great community on Patreon that you can join, as well as our advisory board. So I would recommend checking it out. Absolutely. And we just recently did a review of one battle after another, which I thought was a fantastic conversation.
