Menaces Part 1

On Christmas Eve 1977, 47 years ago, a murder took place. There's a bevy of possible suspects, even motives, but no one has been brought to justice. As the years tick on, suspects have passed away, evidence has been destroyed, and the chances of solving the murder of 21-year-old Terry Lee Foster have dwindled. To honor the 47th anniversary of her death, over the next two episodes, I'll be telling you the life story of Terry and discussing the surprising amount of known possible suspects. Hopefully, someone listening knows something and we can bring this family answers and let Terri rest in peace.Episode Host: Alisha HollandFollow us on:Instagram https://www.instagram.com/murderintherain/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/mintherain/ Twitter https://twitter.com/murderintherain TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@em_murderintherain Website https://www.murderintherain.com/ Email [email protected] SourcesGoogle Maps - David Douglas Park | Brick Store Museum - The History & Art of Tattooing | Orland Unit-Register- Oct. 27 1966 - Personal Mention | Gary Hughes Investigates Our Sponsors: * Check out Happy Mammoth and use my code RAIN for a great deal: https://happymammoth.com Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/murder-in-the-rain/exclusive-content Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

The Open Window

Several months ago, I received an email from a journalist in Washington. Eric Trent, who works for the Chronicle, informed me he had been working on an unsolved disappearance and he was hoping I could help get the word out. We were FINALLY able to have a conversation about the case and it left me with even more questions and a dropped jaw. Today I’ll be telling you all the information publicly available regarding the unsolved disappearance of 11-year-old Louk Peeyoundday and how the FBI special agent assigned to his case hoped he could close it quickly as he had experience with finding missing 11-year-old boys- though the other disappearance I’ll be talking about today wound up having a much darker ending than anyone expected. Deadly Potentialities Part 2: Anaconda Skeleton

Last week, Josh detailed the disappearance and likely murder of Gene Bassett, who had vanished soon after arriving in the Pacific Northwest while on a day–trip to sell his car in Seattle. Found in possession of Bassett's vehicle and belongings, DeCasto Mayer and his mother Mary Smith were found guilty only of grand larceny in the case, as the murder of Gene Bassett could not be proven. In part two of Deadly Potentialities, a confession written on the eve of a prison release, a gruesome death by shame via suicide, and a reach into the past, to solve the vanishing of a a man and woman who were never seen again after entering the home of Mayer and Smith. Deadly Potentialities Part 1: The Poison Pistol

In the weeks leading up to an ocean voyage to The Philippines, Gene Bassett listed his brand new Chrysler for sale in local (Seattle) newspapers. He'd decided to sell the automobile rather than have it shipped to him in Manila, having recently accepted a position there. The morning he left on a ferry to meet a prospective buyer was the last time any of his family ever saw him. The brand-new vehicle also vanished with Gene Bassett. It was recovered days later, eight hundred miles from its last known sighting, driven by a man with at least a dozen aliases- and Bassett, thought dead, was said to have been buried somewhere in the wilds outside of Seattle. For photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. Bloggers Part 2: The Demons Has Taken Over

Part 2: "The Demons Have Taken Over"In last week’s episode, we discussed the 2005 vigilante killings in Bellingham, Washington. A man, haunted by the traumas of his own childhood, was on a mission to hunt pedophiles because he thought he was protecting the public, and more specifically, vulnerable children. He claimed he was inspired to do so by another 2005 case from Idaho, the murders of Mark McKenzie, Brenda Groene, and Slade Groene, and the kidnapping of the two youngest Groene children; Dylan and Shasta. Driven by a desperate desire to confront the man responsible for these heinous crimes, he sought to dispose of as many level 3 sex offenders as he could. In this week’s episode we’ll continue to discuss the Idaho case and what happened after the Groene children were taken and the history of the man responsible; Joseph Edward Duncan III.Episode Host: Emily RowneyFor photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. Bloggers Part 1: The Hit List

Today, we’ll explore two unique cases where perpetrators took to the internet to bear their souls and how the cases relate; a vigilante killer in Washington state who was so floored by a devastating case out of northern Idaho that he took it upon himself to do the public a service and take justice into his own hands. Nine Strangers

A Patreon ExclusiveAs Rob Thomas iconically said in the classic summer jam Smooth ”Man, it’s a hot one”. This summer has seen record temperatures across the country. Speaking of across the country, we’re once again headed out of town, hosting a booth and presentation at the True Crime and Paranormal Podcast Festival in Denver! Since we’re out and about, we’re sharing one of my favorite Patreon episodes, Nine Strangers. Not only is it a fascinating mystery surrounding the deaths of two mountain climbers in South America, but we hope it will chill you out with talks of elevation, snow, and freezing temperatures. So what happens when nine strangers set out from across the US after a Portland-based climbing group puts together the climb of a lifetime? Elevation sickness, frustration, and eventually suspicious deaths. Satan's Son? Part 2

Last week, I told the stories of eight, young Black women trafficked into sex work. All had been murdered in and around North Portland. These cases were presented to the Green River Task Force when no suspects emerged during initial investigations. It was found that none of the murders were connected to Gary Ridgway. Years later, the state would claim five of the women were connected to the same culprit. Today, I’ll detail how police eventually tracked down and arrested a man for four of the murders, employed flimsy-at-best DNA evidence, and how the law presented a generous and underhanded plea deal, which left some wondering if the closure of 4 unsolved cold cases was motivated by a district attorney’s election rather than justice.Episode Host: Alisha HollandFor photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. Satan's Son? Part 1

Starting in March 1983 and through June 1993, someone was killing young, black women and girls in North Portland. The victims weren’t acknowledged with much more than a blip in the paper. The killer wasn’t making the headlines as bombastic Ted Bundy was. He wasn’t prolific enough to warrant a task force like Gary Ridgway. He was a mentally ill man with an extensive criminal history, unmanageable addictions, and no memory of what he may have done. Today’s story isn’t about that man. It’s about his four confirmed victims, and his possible other victims. Next week, I’ll be sharing the story of the subsequent arrest, charges and jail time given to the man police felt could have been responsible for up to 25 murders and how once he was found guilty, his sentence left the family members of victims appalled. A Liar And A Dreamer

Black powder dynamite is both efficient and hazardous. Its general commercial use is to clear land of large debris like boulders and tree stumps. Though it has only 20 to 30 percent of the explosive power of full nitro dynamite, if that power is multiplied and applied to a human body, the effect is devastating. April 21, 1955, was the last day of Oliver Smith's life. Twelve sticks of black powder explosive had been bound with black tape and mounted to the underside of the driver's seat in Smith's 1952 Buick sedan. He'd been driving around Portland for two days, unaware of Death waiting beneath his seat cushion. Late that evening, Smith got into his car, turned the key, hit the starter switch, and died instantly in a blast that destroyed the vehicle and obliterated the 35-year-old attorney and new husband.Episode Host: Josh McCulloughFor photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. Cold-Blooded, Calculated, Murder?

In today’s case we explore a real whodunit in a little unincorporated community in Jackson county called Applegate, Oregon. In 2016 a shocking crime would take place on a local ranch and leave folks reeling when they learned that their little community could be the backdrop for a soon to be infamous crime. Hells Canyon

Hells Canyon ReduxBeing that May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I wanted to share a story that would highlight violence against those in the AAPI community, then I remembered one of the first cases I covered, way back in September of 2019; The Hells Canyon Massacre. Since that time, the story has received more media coverage, and my research abilities have improved, so I wanted to revisit the case and share even more of the story of Hells Canyon and how it isn’t a hidden shadow in Oregon’s history, but rather a cornerstone to its racist foundation. The Heat From The Bullet

A veteran police officer was retired from law enforcement as the result of post-traumatic stress after his involvement in what was once the worst mass shooting in the United States. The next year, after testifying against a fellow officer in a high-profile murder case, he and his family moved from California to a quiet town in Washington. Two years later, he would endure a home invasion that may have been revenge against a cop thought by some to be a rat. Though he’d been found hogtied and shot in the head, his credibility in the incident was doubted by former colleagues who believed he may have staged the incident himself. This is the unsolved mystery of Doyle Wheeler.Episode Host: Josh McCulloughFor photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. Patreon Exclusive: Strange Things Are Afoot At The Circle K

Today's episode is called Strange Things are afoot at the Circle K. Unlike a regular episode, Patreon allows us to venture out of the Pacific Northwest. And in this case, I will be taking us to Naples, Florida, where 20 years ago, within just a couple months of each other, two men in Naples, Florida disappeared. They didn’t have a ton in common except for both being young, hard working fathers. Another thing they have in common? The last time either of them was seen alive, they were being placed in the back of the same police officer's vehicle. Today I’ll be telling the stories of Terrance Williams and Felipe Santos, and the last man seen interacting with them, Cpl. Steven Calkins. A Mother's Love

In this week’s Murder in the Rain episode, we’ll discuss a case with a complicated list of players. When the body of a 33-year-old father is discovered in the brush off a residential road in Gig Harbor, Washington, an unlikely list of suspects is developed and you’ll end up asking yourself, where is the line when protecting someone you love? Would you lie in court for a friend? For your brother? For your child? Would you lie for your mother? Just how far does a mother’s love go?Episode Host: Emily RowneyFor photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. Sisters in Survival

Last week we mentioned that this week’s episode is very special to us and is very different from our usual format. When Danielle Tudor was in town a few weeks ago for a political event, she was kind enough to schedule time with us to give us an update of sorts. So, we went to her mother’s home and sat down with Danielle Tudor and Tiffany Edens, both survivors of Richard Gillmore, Portland’s jogger rapist. For photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain episode blog. Freedom Part 2: The High Line

Last week, I told you about Robert Silveria aka Sidetrack aka The Boxcar Killer, and his years-long series of murders. Sidetrack traveled at will, with no record of his movements, and his pool of victims were the unhoused, the drifters, and the fellow rail hoppers he encountered. People on the fringe- the kind who wouldn't be missed. This week, the end of the murders, the arrest, and many confessions of Robert Silveria, as well as the California police detective who moonlighted as Elvis- a quirk which endeared him to the killer, and also led to this cop writing the actual book on the case. Freedom Part 1

Part 1: "Butchered Up"By the mid-nineteen-nineties, the United States population of train tramps and hobos dropped to only a few thousand from their Depression-era numbers of two million plus. This turn-around began in 1941, when the U.S. began actions during WWII, which led to the military draft, and "the creation of millions of jobs in defense and war industries.” The man we're telling you about today started hopping the rails as a full-time hobo lifestyle in 1991, half a century after the Second World War. He lived as ruler in a kingdom as expansive as the contiguous United States, yet as slim as the space between the rails of the nearly 140,000 miles of freight tracks crisscrossing the country. A nearly unstoppable man, in a world where violence was the law. He called himself Sidetrack.Episode Host: Josh McCulloughFor photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. The Murder of Barbara Jean Hagedorn Part 2

Part 2: The Dream Has Never ChangedLast week I spoke about perpetrator, rapist and murderer Bruce Bradley Bushey. This week, we aren’t talking about him, but about his victims Barbara and her son Patrick. In different ways, Barbara and Patrick both lost their lives to the same man. Today I’ll talk with Patrick about what he remembers of his mother and the chaos surrounding her death. He’ll talk about how it shaped the way reacted as a teen and how he’s turned into a helper as an adult. Victims of Opportunity

In the early 1980s, a terrifying pattern started to emerge; young women and girls disappearing from the Seattle-Tacoma area. It would take a little over two years for most people to realize the severity of the pattern. Green River Killer Part 1: Victims of Opportunity

Part 1: "Victims of Opportunity" In the early 1980s, a terrifying pattern started to emerge; young women and girls disappearing from the Seattle-Tacoma area. It would take a little over two years for most people to realize the severity of the pattern. When multiple bodies of strangled females were discovered in the Green River and surrounding forests, the media put the population on high alert, there was a prolific serial killer here in the Pacific Northwest. This week on Murder in the Rain, we revisit the case of the Green River Killer in preparation for next week’s discussion with Nic Edwards, one half of the dynamic duo who hosts the popular podcast True Crime Garage. The Running Men

When people commit crimes, they often make headlines for going on the lam, doing anything they can to avoid capture and punishment. In today’s episode, Josh is telling three stories of runaway criminals. One who was possibly innocent, yet disappeared and lived under another name for decades. Another is a shady pilot with more than one wife. The third is a man who disappeared in a river when he just so happened to be a few days from going on trial. These three men may have tried to outrun their problems, but their stories are no longer unsolved mysteries. Yakama MMIW: Mysterious Deaths

In a recent Murder in the Rain episode, we discussed the missing women of the Yakama Nation in Washington. The huge reservation is home to rivers, wilderness and an uncountable number of dark corners for people to go missing from. This week, we will be sharing the mysterious deaths that have taken place in the same area; all women from the Yakama area who died in ways that either can’t be explained or appear to be possible homicides. As always, we ask that if you know anything about these cases- even the smallest detail- that you contact the local police agency. We’ve been told by another unsolved case that every time their story is shared publicly, they have received some sort of new tip and they are all helpful. So, if you know something, don’t hesitate! These are the mysterious deaths from the Yakama Reservation. Episode Host: Alisha HollandFor photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. An Enduring Mystery

The Martin Family loaded into their cream-and-red station wagon for a trip up the highway on December 7, 1958. The family was on the hunt for a Christmas tree and greens to make wreaths. From Portland, they drove east into the Columbia River Gorge. Parents Ken(54) and Barbara(48, I know) were in the front, with Ken driving, and their daughters Suzie, Virginia, and Barbie were in the back.As night fell on the Martins' block, a few neighbors noticed the family hadn't returned. The station wagon wasn't parked under the carport, and the lights inside the home were out. No one was home, and they would never be home again. Five members of the Martin family vanished that day, most of them without a trace.Episode Host: Josh McCulloughFor photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. A Dynamic Fight

In today’s episode, we’re going to explore the unsolved murder of Linda Malcom, a Navy veteran whose body was found engulfed in flames in her Port Orchard, Washington home. Despite multiple leads, the case is still unsolved, but with the help of the right people, it might not stay that way for long. With us today are Jennifer Bucholtz and George Jared who are part of a Cold Case Investigative Team through the American Military University. Jennifer is former US Army Counterintelligence, an instructor in criminal justice and forensic science and works as an investigator for the El Paso County Sheriff's Department. Field Stripped

In August of 1997, the quaint little city of Selah, Washington, was shocked to learn that one of their own, Carolyn Clift, was found dead inside her own residence, the victim of a particularly brutal stabbing. Despite multiple eyewitnesses who had heard a disturbance and even glimpsed a potential suspect fleeing the scene, the investigation languished into a cold case. However, a breakthrough occurred providing crucial information that would ultimately crack the case wide open. For photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. The Order Part 2

Part 2: “The Names of the Dead”The Order was a gang of white supremacists turned domestic terrorists. Based out of Washington, headed by extremist Robert Mathews and fueled by hate, The Order carried off a series of bank and armored transport robberies in an effort to fund a race war and the eventual overthrow of the government. In the midst of their crimes, they carried out an assassination- that of controversial Denver talk radio host Alan Berg, who was executed in his driveway. On the run after a shootout with the FBI at a Portland, Oregon motel, Mathews and his followers had regrouped at the secluded homes they'd rented at Smuggler's Cove on Whidbey Island, in Puget Sound. On the morning of Friday, December 7, the gang's three safe houses were quietly surrounded by the FBI. Lights and movement could be seen inside as agents prepared to engage with their targets. When they moved in, Mathews opened fire, and a standoff ensued. For photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. The Order Part 1

Part 1: “The Last Angry Man”It started with a sick dream of a violent revolution and a race war. Robert Mathews blamed Jewish people for all of the ills of the world. He wanted to see them annihilated, so he formed a group, culled from other extremist assemblies, and called it The Order. Their aim was to fund the overthrow of the government through counterfeiting and the armed robberies of banks and armored transport vehicles. With success, their brazenness escalated, and they decided to make a statement, with the assassination of a prominent radio host, shot at close range with a silenced submachine gun. Intended as a mission statement to the world, the group was too short-sighted to recognize it was the impetus of their downfall.
