Listener discretion is advised. Gene Raymond Cain Jr. and his brother Dean were placed under the full custody of their father, Jean Kane, Sr., after they

were found alone at their mother's apartment, malnourished, bruised, and nearly dead from ingesting

pills they'd found lying around. This was in 1959, when Gene was two, Dean only one, and their

mother just 18 years old. The Seattle Times tells me that Dean grew up well-adjusted.

He enlisted in the Navy, had a steady job, married, and had a family.

Jean Jr., however, walked a different path.

He began committing petty crimes at 10.

At 12, he stole a car and had sex for the first time on a public beach with a 14-year-old

girl. Those are two separate occasions. The next year, Gene served a six-month sentence at a

juvenile facility for another car theft. Kane was released from Juvie at age 18, which would

have been around October 1975. The following summer, he confessed to two violent sexual attacks.

July 12, 1976 was the day Kane went hunting.

His prey were the women of Yakima, Washington,

whom he would follow and write down the license plate numbers of those he found attractive.

He first followed a 20-year-old to a shopping mall, intending to rape her.

He parked beside her vehicle and waited two hours until she exited the mall.

And Kane went for it, threatening the woman with a butcher knife, but she was able to break

away.

Failing that attack, Kane went back to cruising and soon found another woman in her 20s exiting a bar.

He tailed her as she began driving northwest from Yakima towards Seattle.
