576 Episodes

Podcast #575: Economics, Ozempic, and Making Local Culture Local Again

We begin the show with a bit of banter, after which we play a TikTok about the absurdity of our entire economic system and the so-called "limited resources" we all fear will run out. We listen to a pretty savage, but mostly accurate, account of Conservative Christianity, and then discuss some lesser-known side effects of drugs like Ozempic. We conclude with a conversation about the loss of any truly local culture.

Podcast #574: Spotify, Corruption, and Atypical Christians

We kick off this episode of the show by considering various ways a person today might "take the black" (little Game of Thrones reference there). We compare our lists of all-time Spotify streams, and then play a TikTok about Trump's recent DOJ deal, discussing whether such corruption is relatively new or whether it was just more hidden in times past. We compare TV and movies as forms of art, and then we do another segment of "PastorĀ  Jack's Off" where Jack Hibbs whines about Muslims or something. We close with the suggestion that the cultural touchstone that just may unite Gen-Xers, Millennials, and Gen-Z is Survivor.

Podcast #573: Childless Millennials, Hell, and Armageddon

We kick off this episode with some TV banter as well as discussing new AI music tools and The Beatles' White Album. Christian gives an update on his trick back, and then we hear from a younger Millennial about how no one is having kids anymore. We get into issues like sex work and OnlyFans, and then consider some reasons why some films just "feel real" while others don't (and it has nothing to do with setting or genre). We hear from a TikTok pastor about what hell's all about, and then go into another segment of "Pastor Jack's Off."

Podcast #572: Aging, Memory, and Screen-time

We kick off this episode with some banter about two abbreviations that are important to each of us: the NBA and an MRI (you can guess whose is whose). Jason laments the process of pounding the pavement and then shares a bizarre mystery concerning his coffee maker, after which we discuss the effect aging has upon our memory. We dive into the issue of how the use of devices and screen-time have on children's development, from which we springboard into a larger discussion about the wholesale dependence upon technology that we as a society have.

Podcast #571: Artificial Unintelligence, Midwest Musings, and Old Politicians

This episode of DXP (which was NOT recorded on a cruise ship) begins with some lamentations about how unintelligent Artificial Intelligence is. We then play several voicemails from a listener from the Midwest on topics ranging from differing forms of government to partisan hypocrisy (as well as how we are incredibly frustrating to listen to). We discuss a video arguing for age limits for politicians (we kind of don't agree, at least not fully), and then conclude with another segment of Pastor Jack's Off on the topic of demon possession, on which he is obviously an expert.

Podcast #570: Immigration and Political Tribalism

This episode of DXP begins with an update on Christian's pain-filled trip to the Caribbean. We then hear from a caller from Texas on the issue of immigration, from which we springboard into a discussion about whether larger populations require different political structures than smaller ones. We discuss the issue of political tribalism and its unfortunate tendency to swallow entire personalities. We conclude with another segment of "Pastor Jack's Off."

Podcast #569: TV Writing, Relativity, and Boredom

We kick off this episode of DXP with a discussion about pro sports and how technology could actually improve the product. We address a voicemail about the use of subtitles when watching TV, which leads to a longer discussion about the quality of recent television more broadly. We spend a fair bit of time responding to a caller's question about last week's brief mention of the theory of relativity, and then conclude by engaging with a TikTok creator's thoughts on childhood boredom.

This episode of DXP kicks off with a discussion of the coming Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter reboots, after which we discuss Project Hail Mary and the issue of "practical effects." We listen to a theory claiming that things in this country are actually improving, after which we discuss the growing acceptance of the existence of aliens (which leads into some deeper conspiracy-related topics). We conclude with Pastor Jack being a moron about the significance of Israel.

Podcast #567: Oscars, ICE, and Selective Outrage

This episode begins with Christian giving Jason an Oscars update (which includes a rabbit trail about Asian culture for some reason). We discuss the upcoming Firefly reboot, and then return to the issue of online betting and Polymarket in particular. We play a couple voicemails about ICE which leads to a discussion about selective outrage. We discuss the issues surrounding Greenland, and close with another segment of "Pastor Jack's Off."

Podcast #566: The Oscars, Our Changing Views, and GLP-1s

We kick off this episode paying respect to the brave men who video people in public with the hope that they will get assaulted and have an excuse to use pepper spray on their assailants. We chat about the film Project Hail Mary, which leads to a broader discussion about the Oscars and why its audience has shrunk so significantly in recent years. We break down a post by one of our patrons about the consequences of our changing views and then discuss the popularity of online betting sites like Polymarket and Kalshi. We conclude by talking about GLP-1 drugs and a new segment of "Pastor Jack's Off."

Podcast #565: Iran, Wee-wees, and Pastor Jack Again

This episode of Drunk Ex-Pastors comes straight to you from the Caribbean! We start off discussing the war in Iran (or, what little we know about it since it started the day we recorded): Do Americans want this? Do Iranians? Whose interests are being served by this war and by manufacturing consent for it? We talk about wieners for a while, and then spend the remainder of our time on a new segment of "Pastor Jack's Off," mostly being puzzled over what the hell he is attempting to say. But we think it has something to do with Iran and God's judgment but it's hard to tell with him.

Podcast #564: Celebrity Activism and Geopolitics

Episode #564 of Drunk Ex-Pastors begins with some banter about Joe Rogan and some Oscar-nominated films, which leads into a discussion about watching our generation slowly get older. We briefly talk about James Franco's apparent un-cancelation, and then address Billie Eilish's recent controversial remarks. We turn our attention to Trump's intentions for both Greenland and Venezuela, and then respond to a content creator's thoughts about becoming too conscious to be able to enjoy simple things anymore.

Podcast #563: Epstein, ICE, and Selective Outrage

We begin this episode of DXP by playing a bit of catch-up: We talk briefly about the Epstein files and then hear about Christian's cruise with comedian Nate Bargatze. We play a voicemail—not from a listener—about a mysterious 911 call that one of us may have made a few years ago. We delve into the ICE controversies and point out some very selective outrage, and we conclude with another edition of "Pastor Jack's Off."

Podcast #562: Music, Movies, and the Passage of Time

For the second time this month, we are recording in the same room instead of remotely! In this episode we reminisce about music and the passage of time, realizing just how old we actually are. We discuss the upcoming Academy Awards, along with films like One Battle After Another and Sinners (and specifically whether it is overrated, and why).

Podcast #561: Renee Good, the Emergent Church, and Split-Screening

We begin this episode talking about a former classmate of ours who recently died of cancer. We return one last time to the Apple TV+ program, Pluribus, and share our thoughts on its first season, and then play a voicemail about the emergent church and its leaders. Another caller offers a humorous observation about Jason, and then we spend some time talking about protesting in general and Renee Good in particular. We discuss the dumbing-down of media content to accommodate people's split-screening, and then we conclude with another segment of "Pastor Jack's Off."

Podcast #560: Cabo Cruises, Sacramentalism, and the Liberal Experiment

We come to you this week from a ship off the coast of Cabo San Lucas! We begin by talking about the cruise, and the Name-That-Eighties-Tune competition in particular (we had some gripes). We talk about evangelicalism and the separation of church and state, expressing some doubts about the validity and practical viability of the whole post-WWII liberal project more broadly (can individualistic religions cohabitate with theocratic ones? Does diversity really work?). We then discuss why it's important for our souls to listen to music on vinyl as opposed to music in its digital and compressed (read: gnostic) form.

Podcast #559: At the Tone, Please Record Your Message

We begin this episode of Drunk Ex-Pastors by entertaining the (disturbing or exciting) thought that we could soon become grandfathers. A voicemail about The Last of the Mohicans leads to a discussion about One Battle After Another, then we hear from another caller talking about Scott Galloway's warnings around online dating culture. Another listener asks about how to deal with pro-Israel evangelical parents, and then we briefly talk about the death of Rob Riener and his wife. We conclude with a couple listeners' biebers involving streaming platforms and tap-to-pay credit card machines.

Podcast #558: Old Movies and the Plight of Young Men

We give a brief update on the case against Pastor Mike Montgomery, and then spend the remainder of the episode discussing Scott Galloway's new book on the plight of young men in this country: disproportionately suicidal, increasingly isolated and rejected, and less and less likely to start a family.

Podcast #557: Pluribus, Satan, and Zionist Crusaders

We begin this episode of DXP with a discussion about how frustrating Jason finds the premise of the new show, Pluribus. We briefly discuss the bizarre (but frightening if true) allegation by Candace Owens that the French government has ordered her assassination, and then talk about whether the Epstein files will end up being a big nothing burger. We dig in to a breaking story about a Zionist pastor's valiant crusade for Israel (there's a huge wrinkle to this story by the way), and then play a couple voicemails about previous AI conversations. We conclude with "Pastor Jack's Off."

Podcast #556: Wayward Pines, AI Music, and Christian Welfare

After some initial cruise-related banter we begin the show by talking about Wayward Pines, the series of books and TV episodes by author Blake Crouch. Christian realizes that Jason was right about Matt Dillon not being a good actor; we then discuss whether an AI can actually write a good song (it's complicated). We talk about the woman who allegedly called dozens of churches looking for help feeding her baby and was refused, and then believe it or not, we share a couple biebers after the return of Pastor Jack's Off.

Podcast #554: Synthetic Lovers, Plastoline, and Algorithmic Disruption

We begin this episode by highlighting a fight between Mark Zuckerberg and Joseph Gordon Levitt over the issue of "synthetic relationships" and their implications for young children. We discuss the recent invention of plastoline, an alternative fuel source that can power automobiles. We conclude by considering one of Bill Maher's recent New Rules involving intentionally disrupting our social media algorithms in order to make space for understanding of and dialog with our opponents. Ā

Podcast #551: Charlie Kirk, Free Speech, and Jimmy Kimmel

In this episode we return once again to the Charlie Kirk murder and address some of the pushback we have received over our coverage of it, including whether it is worth fretting over when an active genocide is happening in Gaza. We address Kirk's statement about some gun deaths being "worth it" to protect the second amendment, and then discuss Jimmy Kimmel's monolog upon his return after his suspension. We then contrast Erika Kirk's response to this tragedy with that of President Trump.

We then turn our attention to the disturbing trend of low birth rates, discussing whether certain cultures have already crossed the line where they cannot be sustained (not to mention the ramifications on things like the work force and social security). We also address whether some cultures deserve to be eliminated.

Podcast #543: A.I. and Traditional Commerce

Despite some tech snafus, DXP is back with a single episode this week. We revisit the topic of artificial intelligence, suggesting that at the rate things are progressing, the entire paradigm of how we get money to pay for things (or just how we pay for things) is likely to change drastically, despite there being seemingly no plan to address this until it's too late. Also, would you allow Grok to control your car?

Podcast #541, Religion: There is No God, and We are His Disciples

In our Religion Block we hear from a caller who asks why God can denounce empty and pious platitudes from Christians who refuse to actually help the needy, while he himself rarely seems to show up in times of trouble. In response we suggest that perhaps God only helps the poor by means of his people, and that he neither afflicts nor heals anyone directly (which is why Dietrich Bonhoeffer insisted that the best thing for a Christian to do is to live as though God does not exist).

In our Religion Block we share a new "Pastor Jack's Off" segment, this time hearing Jack Hibbs insist that all non-believers share a vehement hatred of evangelical Christians, but that the latter must endure that hatred out of love for God. Unfortunately for Pastor Jack, if he is in fact "hated," it has absolutely nothing to do with his so-called faithfulness to Christ and everything to do with his politics. Ā Ā
