483: Healing With The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) | Dr. Stephen Porges + Karen Onderko

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week we have another new episode, which I've been super excited to share with you! I had a powerful experience with the SSP myself, over the last couple of years, and prior to that I had been interested in its potential since first hearing about it around 2017. The challenge I found was in understanding - and then explaining - how it can benefit those who participate in the protocol! My guests today understand all the ins and outs of the protocol. In fact, they literally wrote the book! The new book, Safe and Sound: A polyvagal approach for connection, change and healing, is out now! It covers the research on SSP, gives many case examples, and covers some important factors in the delivery of the method.Stephen W. Porges, PhD, is author of The Polyvagal Theory and creator of SSP. He is professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina and Distinguished University Scientist at Indiana University, where he is founding director of the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium. He lives in Atlantic Beach, Florida. More at stephenporges.com. Karen Onderko helped bring SSP from the research lab to clinicians, who then enabled individuals to experience the many benefits of improved nervous system regulation. Together, they answered all of my questions about how the SSP works, who it's for and what the research to date has found. We will continue to learn about the SSP in a few more episodes. Look for my interview with Paula Scatoloni about the importance of the therapist's (or other provider's) embodied presence when delivering the SSP next week! Find the Polyvagal Institute website here.Purchase Safe and Sound: A polyvagal approach for connection, change and healing here.Access the bonus content my guests mentioned here - you'll see Deb Dana and Arielle Schwartz, among many others!Therapists, visit the new For Therapists page on the Trauma Therapist Network website for discounts on training, recommended resources and more. On behalf of our friends at Unyte Health, we are pleased to share this Trauma Recovery Toolkit, a free resource aimed to support you as you work with clients who present with trauma and nervous system dysregulation. Download the toolkit and access an exclusive discount code for the SSP training! Find a trauma therapist near you via findtraumatherapy.com! Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week I'm sharing a new interview with Dr. Hillary McBride, a clinician, teacher, author, speaker, trainer, and host of "Other People's Problems" podcast on CBC. One of the things I wanted to discuss with her is how they ensure ethics and consent from the clients featured in the therapy sessions shared on the show. I loved her answer! We also discussed spiritual abuse, psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, the research on the COVID pandemic as a transformative experience and more! Hillary writes about embodiment, trauma, eating disorders, mental health and spirituality; her bestselling book The Wisdom Of Your Body was released in 2021, Practices for Embodied Living was released in 2024, and her most recent book "Holy Hurt: understanding spiritual trauma and the process of healing" was released April 2025. 473: The Neuroscience Of Us Vs. Them Thinking with Sarah Peyton

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week, with all the hate and violence in the world, we are revisiting an episode which was originally recorded in 2020. My guest, Sarah Peyton, is a neuroscience educator and author of the wonderful book, "Your Resonant Self," and the accompanying workbook.I'm replaying this episode this week because Sarah shared such interesting and surprising information about how it makes us feel good to unite against a common enemy. Though the newest war that is happening now is what many are focused on, I hope this week's discussion will remind listeners that we can always extend kindness, love, hope and healing outward, and the ripple effects can make a difference. We can also choose to spread hate and fear, but that is not good for our physical or mental health, nor for humanity overall. I hope this episode will help you find glimmers of hope for peace and healing.Sarah Peyton Onlinehttps://sarahpeyton.comThe Institute for Creative Mindfulness is an EMDRIA-approved EMDR Therapy training institute created by Dr. Jamie Marich, a clinician and author who is on a mission to confront stigma around mental health, trauma, and dissociation. They’re offering a special discount to Therapy Chat listeners! Save 15% on any of their courses or CE programs including EMDR basic training until the end of 2024. 469: Internal Family Systems Explained – With Dr. Dick Schwartz

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! Welcome back to Therapy Chat! Today I'm bringing you a replay episode with Dr. Richard Schwartz. Richard Schwartz earned his Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Purdue University, after which he began a long association with the Institute for Juvenile Research at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and more recently at The Family Institute at Northwestern University, attaining the status of Associate Professor at both institutions. He is coauthor, with Michael Nichols, of Family Therapy: Concepts and Methods, the most widely used family therapy text in the United States.Dr. Schwartz developed Internal Family Systems in response to clients' descriptions of experiencing various parts–many extreme–within themselves. He noticed that when these parts felt safe and had their concerns addressed, they were less disruptive and would accede to the wise leadership of what Dr. Schwartz came to call the "Self." In developing IFS, he recognized that, as in systemic family theory, parts take on characteristic roles that help define the inner world of the client. The coordinating Self, which embodies qualities of confidence, openness, and compassion, acts as a center around which the various parts constellate. Because IFS locates the source of healing within the client, the therapist is freed to focus on guiding the client's access to his or her true Self and supporting the client in harnessing its wisdom. This approach makes IFS a non-pathologizing, hopeful framework within which to practice psychotherapy. It provides an alternative understanding of psychic functioning and healing that allows for innovative techniques in relieving clients' symptoms and suffering.Resources:https://www.selfleadership.org Considering training in the Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP)? Visit unyte.com to learn more about the SSP and use my code LREAGAN1 at checkout for $100 off an annual SSP subscription bundle or training course. Thank you PESI and Psychotherapy Networker for sponsoring this week's episode! Therapists, heck out Janina Fisher's trainings and other offerings related to trauma, attachment and shame via the PESI/Psychotherapy Networker partner page and get special discounts! Thank you to TherapyNotes for sponsoring this week's episode! 461: Understanding Codependency with Michelle Farris

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week we're revisiting an interview from a couple of years ago with Michelle Farris.I always found the concept of codependency confusing when people would try to explain it to me. I didn't realize I had some of these behaviors, which I thought were just part of my personality! I've spent years working on my attachment in therapy, and I can now see these patterned relational dynamics, which have been passed down through my family for generations, for what they are.The first step to changing codependent relational patterns is to understand what they are! Michelle explains in such compassionate, clear and relatable terms. This topic comes up often during the holidays, and codependent behaviors tend to add to overwhelm and stress during this busy time of year. And those of us who are socialized as female are often expected to behave this way! I hope you'll enjoy this thought-provoking replay episode with the awesome Michelle Farris!Visit Michelle Farris's website here.  🌟TRAUMA THERAPISTS🌟 We are needed more than ever. 460: Understanding the Impact of Childhood Emotional Neglect With Dr. Jonice Webb

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week's episode is one that many of us will find enlightening during this holiday season. We're revisiting two previous interviews with Dr. Jonice Webb, who identified the concept of Childhood Emotional Neglect. What is it? Listen to these 2 back to back episodes to understand! Here's what you'll hear: so many adults suffer with trauma symptoms but don't understand why. Listening to this week's episode may be helpful for anyone who grew up before the 2010's, when parents began to be more aware of attachment needs. Before that time most parents were not very well aware of children's emotional needs or how to meet them. This leaves us feeling empty and struggling in relationships as adults, or feeling there is something wrong with us. Even if your parents did know about attachment needs, it doesn't mean they were always able to meet them, despite their best intentions. As always, thanks for listening to Therapy Chat!Visit Dr. Jonice Webb's website here: 🌟TRAUMA THERAPISTS🌟 We are needed more than ever. 459: Adult Children Of Emotionally Immature Parents - With Dr. Lindsay Gibson

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week we have a replay of my first interview with Dr. Lindsay Gibson. Having emotionally immature parents is a common issue, but most of us don't realize how traumatizing it can be to grow up this way. When we are bothered by anxiety, depressive symptoms, low self worth and other effects of trauma, we may think there's something wrong with us. But as they say, 'it's not you, it's what happened to you.' In this conversation Dr. Lindsay Gibson explains why emotionally immature adults are the way they are, and how it affects their children into adulthood. Understanding these dynamics is an important aspect of breaking cycles of intergenerational trauma. During the holiday season it's so common to have trauma reactions arise when interacting with our families of origin. 458: Parts Perspectives From Lived Experience + IFS With Dr. Jamie Marich + Dr. Dick Schwartz

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week we have a conversation with two guest that I hope you'll find interesting whether you identify as a therapist, a human with complex PTSD/developmental trauma, part of a system of multiples or someone with a dissociative disorder, or if you are anyone who's curious about parts work and your inner world. I was honored to record this interview earlier this month with two amazing therapists who are thought leaders in the trauma world: Dr. Jamie+ Marich, author of Dissociation Made Simple and many other books; and Dr. Dick Schwartz, who developed Internal Family Systems (IFS).  Dr. Jamie Marich (she/they/we) began her career as a humanitarian aid worker in Bosnia-Hercegovina from 2000-2003, primarily teaching English and music. Jamie travels internationally teaching on topics related to trauma, EMDR therapy, expressive arts, mindfulness, and yoga, while maintaining a private practice and online education operations in her home base of Akron, OH. Marich is the founder of the Institute for Creative Mindfulness and the developer of the Dancing Mindfulness approach to expressive arts therapy. Her personal memoir about surviving spiritual abuse called You Lied to Me About God came out in October 2024. Dr. Dick Schwartz began his career as a family therapist and an academic at the University of Illinois at Chicago. There his patients became his teachers as they described how their parts formed networks of inner relationship that resembled the families he had been working with. He also found that as they focused on and, thereby, separated from their parts, they would shift into a state he calls Self. From these explorations the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model was born in the early 1980s. IFS is now evidence-based and has become a widely-used form of psychotherapy, particularly with trauma. It provides a non-pathologizing, optimistic, and empowering perspective and a practical and effective set of techniques for working with individuals, couples, families, and more recently, corporations and classrooms.Learn more about Dr. Jamie Marich here.Learn more about Dr. Dick Schwartz and IFS here. 🌟 Trauma Therapists 🌟 We are needed more than ever. 457: Discovering Self + Healing Trauma Though IFS + Art With Sacha Mardou

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week's guest is Sacha Mardou, an illustrator who has documented her journey of healing from family trauma and abuse using IFS therapy in a new graphic memoir called Past Tense, which is available now. Sacha is not a therapist, but she has a gift for making the process of IFS therapy relatable and her book is a fabulous resource for anyone who is interested in learning about healing. She's someone I've followed on social media for years - I even have an original work of hers in my home. I'm so excited that her work is now reaching a larger audience. There's something really powerful about the combination of artwork and therapy-related material that reaches another level when reading. Sacha Mardou is a British cartoonist and graphic novelist who now makes a home in St Louis, Missouri. Her graphic memoir, Past Tense: Facing Family Secrets and Finding Myself in Therapy (Avery Press, 2024) is an account of her emotional healing journey using IFS therapy.Find Sacha Mardou's book, Past Tense, on Amazon here.Visit Sacha's website here: https://ifscomics.com Follow Sacha on Facebook and Instagram🌟 Trauma Therapists 🌟 We are needed more than ever. 455: Feminism, Patriarchy, Moms + Rage - With Erin Spahr

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week, as we look toward a very important election in the United States, my guest is Erin Spahr, a licensed therapist, mother, feminist, podcast host, and maternal mental health advocate based in Raleigh, NC. Erin uses her large social media following on her Instagram account, Feminist Mom Therapist, to raise awareness about the issues affecting moms and women in the U.S. We talked about why moms are feeling burned out and how their recovery process involves setting boundaries, and feeling angry at the inequality in our gendered society. And we talked about how the Patriarchy harms everyone in a family, regardless of gender or age, because of its impossible expectations. Erin uses a feminist lens in her work with mothers and strives to help mothers free themselves from oppressive societal expectations and find more self-confidence and self-compassion. She hosts the Feminist Mom Podcast where she discusses the intersection of feminism and motherhood with inspiring guests. Erin recently launched the Inclusive Provider Directory, a directory that serves as a vital link connecting mothers, birthing individuals, and families in the United States and Canada with perinatal providers who prioritize inclusivity and identity-affirming care. Erin is a clinician in private practice (available to folks in North Carolina and Maryland). She lives in Raleigh, North Carolina with her husband and two kids. 448: Resilience - Focused EMDR With Libby Murdoch

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! The typical approach to trauma therapy has been to go down deep and excavate the trauma. While I love doing deep trauma therapy work as much as anyone else (likely more than some), if a client's nervous system doesn't have the capacity to tolerate "going there," it can be too much. That's why I was really curious to talk to Libby Murdoch, LPC, CCTP about her Resilience-Focused EMDR therapy training! The concept of building resilience is gaining traction in our field, and it makes sense! Listen in to our conversation as Libby and I discuss her EMDR Basic Training offerings and what's different about her Resilience-Focused approach.I met Libby last year in London at a conference where she was a speaker and I loved her enthusiasm for the work and her way of clearly explaining the neuroscience, making it accessible for more people to understand.  Libby Murdoch is a licensed professional counselor and certified clinical trauma professional who is an EMDRIA-approved EMDR Trainer. She facilitates Basic EMDR Training for clinicians on a monthly basis. She has a private practice located in Cincinnati, OH where she offers EMDR intensives. She is the developer of Resilience-Focused EMDR and Psychological CPR. Libby has presented at various conferences across the US and internationally, specializing in neuroscience topics such as resilience, relationships, self-care, and trauma. She utilizes techniques based on brain science in treatment, including EMDR, and is passionate about making neuroscience accessible to everyone.Learn more about Libby Murdoch's EMDRIA-approved EMDR Trainings at: https://brainbasedemdr.com🌟Trauma Therapists🌟 my membership community, Trauma Therapist Network, opens for new members THIS MONTH! Add your name to the waiting list here for first access and a special discount!Watch this episode in video format on YouTube!I'm excited to share that I'll be exhibiting at the Integrative Medicine for Mental Health (IMMH) Conference, October 10-13, 2024 in Washington, DC! Experience four days of learning about the latest scientific evidence and best clinical practices in integrative mental health and functional medicine psychiatry. 446: Residential Trauma Treatment For Deep Healing With Benjamin Fry

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! I've been eager to find residential treatment programs that are truly trauma sensitive and even better if they actually include bottom up healing methods. This has not been easy to find, but this summer I visited my colleague and friend Benjamin Fry's Khiron Clinic in Oxfordshire, UK. I was able to see the beautiful grounds and meet the highly skilled staff. They generously answered my questions about their work and I learned about the investment Khiron Clinics have made in bringing in leaders in the trauma field to provide training, supervision and consultation to the clinicians and staff. It's pretty amazing, and I was honored to interview Benjamin about why he started Khiron and how the programs serve trauma survivors through communal living and bottom up therapies in a beautiful setting in the English countryside. He shared his healing journey and what he learned from his nervous breakdown. I encourage you to watch this episode on YouTube where you can see images of the location and grounds of Khiron House and watch the two of us do this interview in person. Benjamin Fry is the founder of Khiron Clinics, one of the world's leading residential trauma-treatment centers, and Televagal, an innovative mental health technology platform. An accredited psychotherapist, couples therapist, speaker, author, and entrepreneur, he has written four books, including The Invisible Lion: How to Tame your Nervous System and Heal your Trauma. With a diverse career spanning psychology, media, and business, Benjamin read Physics and Philosophy at Oxford and then attended film school, directing a feature-length film distributed by HBO and Paramount. He later went on to set up various enterprises in the hospitality industry before completing an MA in Psychotherapy and Counseling and an Executive MBA from Oxford University. His first book led to his role as the expert psychotherapist on the BBC series Spendaholics. Benjamin speaks at mental health conferences worldwide, raising awareness of the effectiveness of nervous system-based therapies for treating trauma. He also delivers workshops to help people optimize and heal their relationships through trauma-informed practices and education.Learn more about Khiron Clinics hereVisit Benjamin Fry's website here*Trauma Therapists*, my membership community, Trauma Therapist Network, opens for new members in September! Add your name to the waiting list here for first access and a special discount!Watch this episode in video format on YouTube!Thank you to TherapyNotes for sponsoring this week’s episode! I was together with these 2 wonderful teachers just recently in Germany and England. By chance, Courtney and I were invited to the same dinner and a relationship that began with a podcast interview has become a friendship, luckily for me! I’m so grateful for the work that Deb and Courtney are doing to make Polyvagal Theory available for everyone’s use on our healing journeys!Find Deb Dana’s website with all of her offerings at: https://www.rhythmofregulation.com/Visit Courtney Rolfe’s website to keep up with everything she’s doing at: https://www.modernmindandheart.com/Find their book, Polyvagal Prompts: finding connection and joy through guided explorations on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/3xM66hyTherapists - want to feel more competent in trauma work? 435: Developmental Trauma, Autoimmune + Integrative Nutrition with Dr. Leslie Korn

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! In the last of the interviews from Psychotherapy Networker Symposium in March 2024, I was fortunate to have a deep conversation with my friend and colleague Dr. Leslie Korn. Leslie has been a guest on Therapy Chat previously and I've learned so much from her about integrative nutrition and trauma. This time we talked about the intersection between childhood trauma, "dis-ease," "dis-orders," autoimmune responses, integrative nutrition and overall health and wellbeing. I talked about my own journey with a health crisis between 2015 and 2019 and what I've learned since then. We touched on attachment, developmental trauma, hormones, autoimmune responses, integrative nutrition and mental health, among many other things, in this fascinating conversation!Work with Leslie via her website here. Check out Dr. Leslie Korn's trainings and other offerings related to trauma and integrative nutrition via the PESI/Psychotherapy Networker partner page and get special discounts! Watch this episode in video format on YouTube!TIME SENSITIVE INFO FOR TRAUMA THERAPISTS: *Trauma Therapists*, my membership community, TTN is NOW OPEN until June 7th, 2024 ! 434: Shame As An Adaptation To Trauma + Attachment Wounds with Dr. Janina Fisher

This week's episode is the fourth of five live interviews recorded live at Psychotherapy Networker Symposium in March. This week's guest is someone I have admired and learned from for years, Dr. Janina Fisher! Janina Fisher was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Networker this year. I was so honored to be able to sit down with her face to face to discuss a topic she spoke about at the conference, the challenge of how shame shows up in our lives and can present obstacles along our healing paths. I shared some of my observations from my own lived experience of the insidious way shame can creep in without us even realizing its impact, and Janina spoke about shame as a somatic adaptation, and how trauma therapists can work with shame effectively to help clients who are unconsciously operating and responding from that space. I was so grateful to speak with this amazing teacher who has done so much for the field of trauma therapy over more than 30 years! Because of some tech issues, this is a shorter episode than usual. Many valuable nuggets for therapists and anyone who wants to understand how shame can insidiously take over and get in the way of how we want to live our lives!Learn about Janina Fisher's work at her website: https://janinafisher.com/Register for Janina's TIST trainingCheck out Janina Fisher's trainings and other offerings related to trauma, attachment and shame via the PESI/Psychotherapy Networker partner page and get special discounts! TIME SENSITIVE INFO FOR TRAUMA THERAPISTS: *Trauma Therapists*, my membership community, TTN is NOW OPEN until June 1st, 2024 !
