213. SECRETS and Abandonment In A 'Good' Family Home

This week I share a story that is going to resonate so deeply with anyone who felt total loneliness and abandonment growing up. Brooklyn is the sweetest soul you will ever meet. Before we met, Brooklyn sent me her most recent family photo which showed her mom and dad, her sister and brother-in-law, her own family and all the kids. Everyone is smiling and showing up as the happy family. But the truth is quite different. The reality is, Brooklyn's mom was an alcoholic. This was to be kept a secret her entire life. She could tell no one about the chaos that was unfolding every day in her family home, even to her closest friends. Brooklyn's mom was not there physically or emotionally. Her Dad was controlling, angry and triggered. He was unavailable emotionally or able to offer protection, care or love. And Brooklyn spent her life lurching from one crisis to another inside this chaotic family home. No safety, just fear. Trying endlessly to save her mom whilst trying not to trigger her Dad. And it has impacted everything about her life. If you have a story to share for this podcast please connect with me at www.instagram.com/mybigloveproject or send an email to [email protected]. 211. A Lifetime Of Trauma and a Determination To Be Free PART 1

Welcome to Season 7!  From a very young age, Melissa suffered physical abuse at the hands of her mother. Melissa’s father was absent for work much of the time and Melissa’s parents marriage was highly volatile and chaotic. (**Trigger Warning**) The chaos reached a devastating peak when, at the age of 3 1/2, Melissa’s father murdered her mother. From that moment, Melissa was deeply traumatised. She had lost both her parents, her home, and was thrust into the midst of a highly sensationalised murder trial, and this was only the beginning of Melissa’s trauma. 197. The Profound Effects Of Seemingly Small Traumas

Did you know that deep trauma can be rooted in seemingly small, overlooked experiences from our past? Not all trauma is born from a lifetime of abuse or abandonment by a parent; sometimes, it's the seemingly insignificant events that leave a lasting mark on our lives. In this quick chat episode, our guest, Enneagram Coach Samantha Mackay, shares her personal journey of understanding how a seemingly minor childhood experience shaped her life in significant ways. 196. How To Be Authentic

"Be strong, don't cry, suppress your emotions and strive to meet your parents' every expectation." In this episode we are talking about losing our authenticity as a result of parental expectation. From a young age, Dr Sajad Vahedi found himself living a life he had crafted to conform to the expectations of his family. Despite being an inherently emotional child, Sajad learned to stifle his feelings in order to adapt and survive in this environment. This emotional disconnect led him to develop what he calls a 'logical' persona, a facade he wore to navigate the world. When you disconnect from your emotions, especially during childhood, it can profoundly alter your identity. You end up presenting a version of yourself to the world that is not authentic. This divergence between your true self and your external persona can have immense consequences, such as entering into relationships with individuals who are drawn to the false image you project. Over time, you may become a people pleaser, prioritizing the needs of others at the expense of your own. It's easy to lose sight of your own authentic needs in the process. Sajad is an expert in understanding and transforming these patterns in relationships. He helps his clients learn how to reconnect with their genuine selves and break free from the constraints of false personas.Join us for Sajad's insightful and inspiring story as he shares his journey of self-discovery and personal growth. 194. The Mother Wound Cuts Deep

In this thought-provoking episode, we dive deep into the intricate and multi-layered subject of the Mother wound. Despite the societal idealisation of mothers as kind, loving, and supportive figures, the reality is more nuanced for many women. Often, our mothers struggled to fulfil this role due to their own challenging upbringings, past abuse, or neglect. Michelle Gomez, a leader in helping women heal from the Mother wound, shares her story of growing up with a mother who treated her as a utility rather than a daughter. She was valuable when she was useful. She was thrown out of home when she dared disagree with her mom. Michelle kept her struggles with her Mom a secret for years but when she finally told the truth she received an outpouring from women who were silently enduring similar issues with their mothers, leaving them feeling isolated. Michelle specialises in working with Latina, Black, Indigenous, and women of color, but her insights will resonate deeply with all of us. Join us as we explore the complexities and healing processes surrounding the Mother wound. 192. What Makes A Cycle Breaker? with Dr Mariel Buqué

What makes a cycle breaker? In this episode, we are privileged to sit down and have a profound conversation with Dr. Mariel Buqué, a remarkable leader in the field of trauma. Dr. Mariel holds a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology from Columbia University and is now a distinguished Trauma Psychologist. She's the author of Break The Cycle: A Guide To Healing Intergenerational Trauma, a must-read for anyone seeking to understand and heal from the impact of intergenerational trauma. In this episode Dr Mariel shares her own story of generational trauma and her path to healing. What truly stands out in our conversation is the revelation that when Dr. Mariel was pursuing her degree, the clinical model all psychologists were trained under was not based on trauma. Students, including Dr. Mariel, were consistently sharing stories of trauma repeating across generations, but the term "intergenerational trauma" was never used throughout her years of study, and this was less than a decade ago. This fact highlights how recent the concept of intergenerational trauma is. We are among the first generations with the tools to comprehend how generational trauma is perpetuated, how we can address it, and what it means for our descendants. We are at a unique juncture in history, with a golden opportunity to break these cycles for our families – an honor and privilege we can't take lightly. Dr. Mariel shares invaluable insights in this episode, and we invite you to join us in exploring her story and expertise. 191. The Power Of Standing Up Against Your Abuser

In this compelling quick chat episode, we delve into a story of immense courage and resilience, exploring the journey of a survivor of child abuse who found the strength to confront her past and seek justice. Lynn Crook's journey is a testament to the incredible power within each of us when we choose to confront our traumatic past and hold those responsible accountable. Lynn's journey begins with the revelation that she had buried memories of abuse endured at the hands of her own father. For years, her recollections were limited to positive memories, leaving her unaware of the deeply traumatic experiences she had repressed. It wasn't until her mid-forties that these repressed memories began to resurface. With the support of therapy and the courage to confront her father, who adamantly denied the allegations, Lynn made a life-changing decision. She resolved to pursue justice for the abuse she suffered as a child through the legal system, a journey that would demand immense strength and determination. Standing up in this way, especially against one's own family, is an incredibly challenging and courageous act. Lynn's unwavering commitment to seeking the truth and pursuing justice persisted over many years, even as the False Memory Syndrome Foundation emerged, a group founded by parents accused of child abuse to discredit the recollections of adults about their childhood experiences. Lynn's journey led her to write a profoundly important book titled False Memories: The Deception That Silenced Millions shedding light on the complexities of memory and abuse. You can find a link to purchase her book HERE. Lynn Crook's story is a testament to the power of the human spirit and the profound strength it takes to confront childhood trauma and seek justice. Her journey reminds us that healing from trauma is possible, even in the face of immense challenges, and that the power to stand up against child abuse resides within each survivor. If you or someone you know is dealing with trauma or seeking recovery, Lynn's story offers hope, inspiration, and a path toward healing. 190. How To Heal From Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse—and its far-reaching effects. Anna believed she’d had a good childhood, there were annual family holidays and no obvious disadvantages. However, the journey to healing began when Anna became a mother and faced a startling realization about her own past. Anna's daughter's behavior proved to be extremely challenging, and Anna found herself plagued by intense thoughts of harming her child. Fearing for her family's well-being, Anna and her loved ones sought help and were admitted to a groundbreaking facility in Europe known as a social pediatric center. Here, they were meticulously studied and observed by experts in the field over many weeks. The results of this evaluation left Anna in a state of shock. The professionals told her that there was nothing wrong with her child, but they suspected that Anna herself was struggling with depression and had likely experienced childhood emotional neglect. Childhood emotional neglect is a subtle and insidious form of abuse that can be incredibly difficult to identify, even for the person who has endured it. What makes matters more complex is the silence surrounding mental health within families, where talking about these issues is often stigmatized, leading to the normalization of living with mental health challenges. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of Anna's journey of self-discovery and healing. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of acknowledging emotional abuse and its lasting impact on individuals and families.  HEAL BLOG HERE How To Recognise Emotional Neglect If you have a story to share for this podcast please connect with me at https://www.instagram.com/mybigloveproject or send an email to [email protected]. 175: Toxic Masculinity: The Need To Be Vulnerable

In this episode, we delve into the persistent influence of toxic masculinity on our culture's notions of masculinity which amplifies dominance, suppresses emotions, fuels aggression, and stifles emotional expression. While we're making strides in redefining societal expectations for men, the staggering suicide rates among men reflect the ongoing struggle. The reality is that many men find it challenging to open up, share their secrets, or embrace vulnerability. The story of Nathan Spiteri underscores this struggle. Groomed from a tender age by an individual he met at the local swimming pool, his life was torn apart. Despite the turmoil he endured, he remained silent for years.Today, Nathan is at the forefront of advocating for change. He's shedding light on the concept that vulnerability isn't a weakness but a source of strength. Emotions are valid, and speaking about our struggles is imperative. We join Nathan as he passionately emphasises the need to confront the uncomfortable truth: sexual abuse affects boys too, and it's time to dismantle the illusion that it doesn't.
