Content warning: childhood abuse, childhood sexual abuse, sexual assault, rape, abduction, missing persons, gun violence, murder, and mental illness.Amber Rodgers is a survivor, business professional, and creative from Texas. As early as she can remember, her life was filled with chaos. By the time she was fourteen, she was a multi-crime survivor, and by 19 she would serve as a witness in her best friend’s murder trial. Amber moved forward by cultivating a successful career and loving family, until her past trauma instigated a cascading effect in her mental health and relationships. Although Amber has shared portions of her story at-large, it took her decades and a life-altering mental health journey to realize the deep impact her teen years had had on her. The Broken Cycle Media team is deeply appreciative of Amber’s transparency, rawness, and advocacy in the following two episodes. These episodes are dedicated in loving memory of Kytrina Marie Locascio.Sources: Curt Hodges. “Woman Murdered; Killer Sentenced.” The Jonesboro Sun, 22 Nov. 1997. Deep Cover is a true crime show about double lives, from our friends at Pushkin Industries. Their new season, The Family Man, is a story about how families can deceive each other and the lengths we’ll go to to protect our loved ones. Elise and Marissa grew up in a seemingly normal house in the suburbs of St. Louis, but it was a house built on secrets. There were things their father never told them—like how he really made his money. One night, the police showed up, raided their house, and seized boxes of evidence. Hours later, the sisters turned on the TV and saw something surreal: their father in the middle of a police chase. The local news identified him as “The Boonie Hat Bandit”. The girls were stunned. They struggled to accept the truth: Dad had been living a double life. How long had he been lying to them? What had he done? And who, exactly, was their father? Find Deep Cover: The Family Man wherever you get podcasts. If you want to know how the story ends right now, binge the full season by signing up for a Pushkin+ subscriptions on the Deep Cover show page on Apple Podcasts or at pushkin.fm/plus.

Content Warning: grooming, domestic violence, physical violence, sexual violence, sexual abuse, childhood sexual abuse, and sex trafficking. In these two episodes we feature Marina Lacerda, a survivor and mother from Brazil. In her youth, she immigrated to New York with her mother in hopes of forging a new life. Almost immediately, Marina would begin to face sexual and physical violence that normalized a long cycle of abuse. By the time she was 14, Marina would be introduced to Jeffrey Epstein, a man that seemed to symbolize success and wealth, but only added to her trauma. Eventually, Marina would play a part in both of the FBI’s attempts at justice in 2008 and 2019, when during the latter, she would be dubbed, “Minor Victim 1.” Marina’s journey is a testament to the impact of the cycle of abuse, but it also is a testament to her personal resilience and strength. Content Warning: rape, self-harm, and suicidal ideation.Marlee Liss is a survivor,award-winning speaker, victim advocate, somatic educator, and author from Toronto, Canada. She grew up in the arts, but pivoted to social work when she began her college career. It was in Marlee’s junior year when her life changed forever; she became the victim of a sexual assault and entered an arduous journey in the criminal justice system as a result. However, three years into that battle for justice, Marlee found an additional path: restorative justice. According to Walden University, quote “Punitive justice is the idea of punishing criminals for their crimes against society or the legal system itself, and is the traditional method of handling crime in the United States. Restorative justice seeks to bring victims of crimes into the justice process. Criminals are asked to take accountability for their wrongdoing by facing those they have wronged... The theory is that criminals owe more than a debt to society—they owe a debt to specific people,” end quote. The two processes are not always mutually exclusive. It’s important to note that criminal justice can occur tandemly with restorative justice practices. Content Warning: infidelity, physical abuse, intimate partner violence, domestic violence, and murder. Jenn Holman is a survivor, mother, and faithful family woman living in Idaho by way of Southern California. Our paths first crossed over eighteen years ago, when she began dating my brother (whom she has chosen to address as Jesse in this episode, although I have referred to him as ‘Rory’ in the past). Her relationship with Jesse began a year and a few months prior to my mother’s murder, and although I was privy to a portion of what Jenn will share in this conversation, some of the more explicit details of the abuse she faced evaded us as a family. Through this interview, I've also now learned a lot more about the night my mom was murdered. I commend her bravery in sharing, and am personally, deeply grateful she was willing to divulge so much with us today. *Content warning: harassment, cyberstalking, workplace abuse, sexual abuse material, sexual sadism, murder, and serial murder. Javier Leiva is a podcast host and Emmy award-winning producer. His show, Pretend Podcast, began airing in 2017 and highlights cases of fraud executed by perpetrators from cult leaders to con artists to undercover FBI agents. However, it was in June 2024 that Pretend's eighteenth season became much more personal for him. At first, accusations against Arkansas based LaDonna Humphrey barely grabbed his attention. But the more accusations he received, the more Javier realized he had to work to uncover the truth about LaDonna, a seasoned true crime podcaster and author herself. And almost immediately after Javier reached out to her for comment, he would begin to experience alleged harassment too, joining the growing list of Ladonna's accusers. The Broken Cycle media team is incredibly grateful Javier was willing to share the behind the scenes of this formative season, and all that came next for him as his own role shifted from host to victim.
