It was supposed to be a robbery, but a lot of things went wrong that night. The 25-year-old Filip Nordlund ended up killing 5 people, and wounding another 8 people, and he only got away with what in today’s money would have been 1700 USD. When the perpetrator realized that she was awake he started stabbing her as well. She was probably unconscious for a while, but when she came to, she called emergency services to get help. She was badly wounded and hadn’t yet realized that her husband was already dead. Ambulance and police were sent to the beautiful summer cabin in Granliden, outside of the city of Arboga in the middle of Sweden. On 22 October 2015, 21-year-old Anton Lundin Pettersson entered the Kronan School in the town of Trollhättan, armed with a huge sword. His mission was to kill, but some students thought he was pranking, I guess the situation was so unreal. We don’t really have school shootings here in Sweden, I guess because it’s much more difficult for a Swedish teenager to get a hold of a gun. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have frustrated teenagers. Animal protection are called out to a house where two cats seems to be abandoned. Animal protection call the police and ask them to go into the house since the lights are on inside, but nobody is opening. When entering the house, the police are met with a terrible smell, something is definitely dead in here one of the officers later remembers thinking when he entered. But they don’t find the woman living there, and they conclude that the smell must be from the cats that had been able to go in and out of the house as the wished. Nobody had seen the woman who lived in the house for a while, and after being contacted by Animal protection, her father reports her missing. About two weeks later the police return to the house, this time bringing a K9-unit. One of the dogs immediately alert his handler to a large pile of wood and junk inside the boiling room. The missing woman had been found. Not everyone knows that the red wedding in the George RR Martin’s Game of Thrones is actually inspired by a real event – Stockholms blodbad which translates to Stockholm bloodbath. The Stockholm Bloodbath was a trial that led to a series of executions in Stockholm between the 7th and 9th of November, 1520. It all started with the coronation of Christian II, the celebrations of the coronation were ongoing for three days, and in the end of those three days the guests were slaughtered. After that Kristian II became known as Kristian Tyrann, which translated is Kristian the Tyrant. Nearly 100 people were executed at the party and in the months following the tragedy. 8-year-old Yara comes to Sweden as a refugee without her parents, she is placed in the care of her uncle and his wife who had just recently fled to Sweden themselves. But what was supposed to be a safe place for Yara to grow up in, turns out to be the exact opposite. The uncles home is not suitable for children at all, and the uncle’s wife turns out to be a child abuser of the worst kind. On Tuesday May 11th, 2010, a man comes home from work. He enters the house he shares with his wife and her three children. He sees blood outside the entrance door, and when goes inside the house, it’s completely silent. Downstairs he finds a dead man, he immediately calls 112 and while he is on the phone with emergency personnel, he finds the two bodies of his wife’s children, 15-year-old Björn and 12-year-old Linnea. 10-year-old Helen Nilsson disappeared on March 20th, 1989 and was found dead six days later. She had been kept alive for several days. About five months later, on August 4th, 1989, the body of 26-year-old Jannica Ekblad is found. These two murders are not connected by the police due to the age difference of the victims. But 13 years later, a woman is seated next to a detective at a dinner party and what she has to tell the detective is what finally solves the two cases. Marina Johansson went missing the night between July 27th and July 28th, 2010, and there were a lot of speculation on what might have happened to her. Her boyfriend is suspected of murdering her, but there is no body. And when he is put on trial in August of 2010 he is found not guilty in court. But in April of 2012 Marinas body is found, and he is again tried for her murder, and this time he gets convicted. It’s almost never heard of that a person who is found not guilty in trial for a crime, then later gets convicted for the same crime. But this is one of those rare cases. On Thursday August 23rd, 1973 a man armed with a machinegun walks in to a bank in Stockholm, fires a round and takes four people hostage. The man demands that his friend Clark Olofsson is released from prison. Six days later the police are able to free the hostages and arrest the man. But during those six days, the hostages became friendly with the robbers. This is later called the Stockholm Syndrome. This is the case of Engla Höglund and Pernilla Hellgren. Pernilla was a 31 year old woman who was found murdered in Falun on June 4 2000, she had been beaten and strangled, and is found naked. The case remained unsolved for eight years. And it could have been solved earlier, because it’s later revealed that the police received a tip in 2006 naming the actual killer. But almost eight years after Pernilla brutally killed, on Saturday April 5th, 2008 a 10-year-old girl named Engla Höglund goes missing in the small town of Stjärnsund. Stjärnsund is located about 45 kilometers or about 27 miles from Falun where Pernilla was found murdered eight years before. At the time nobody knew or even suspected that the two cases could be connected, but it soon turns out that they are. And the mayor clue to find the killer/abductor turns out to be a couple of photos taken by a man who’s out on a long walk with some friends on that same Saturday that Engla goes missing.
