S14 Ep51: One-Hit Wonder

The 2016 Giro d’Italia was the first edition covered end to end, on the ground, by The Cycling Podcast, and what a race it proved to be. A thrilling last week saw Steven Kruijswijk fall at the last hurdle, almost literally, and Vincenzo Nibali mount an extraordinary comeback. But neither of these stories could rival stage 15 to Alpe di Siusi and more specifically the victory of rank outsider Alexander Foliforov for sheer shock value. Foliforov disappeared almost as quickly as he burst onto the scene, retiring two years after his Giro stage win. Since then he has become a meme, a sort of post-ironic legend, but above all an enigma: what mysterious force propelled him to victory that day, and where has he vanished to over the last ten years? Exactly a decade on from the Russian’s greatest day, Daniel Friebe tracked him down and invited Foliforov to relive and explain one of the strangest days and results in recent Giro history. One-Hit Wonder was written and produced by Daniel Friebe. Music is by Amaraterra. S14 Ep50: Viva Somarriba!

Grab a round of agua con gas and listen in as Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Rebecca Charlton review the Spanish stage racing block. With many of the big hitters away making preparations for the forthcoming Giro d’Italia, the short stage races of Itzulia and Vuelta a Burgos provided plenty of surprises and breakthroughs. On a rare opportunity from domestique duties, Mischa Bredewold led the charge for SD Worx who looked back to their old imperious best. But what does the win mean for a team that already have so many champions in their roster? Yara Kastellijn’s huge victory on the final day of Burgos cemented a phenomenal few weeks for the rider who has been without a win since her breakthrough at the Tour de France Femmes in 2023. Plus, did FDJ United Suez make the wrong call in Itzulia by not backing young British star Lauren Dickson? In our mini feature we speak to the last Spanish rider (before Paula Blasi this year) to win a women’s Grand Tour. That champion is Joane Somarriba, a rider who twice won the Giro Feminile and three times won Tour de France Femmes precursor the Grand Boucle. She talks about her journey to the top, overcoming hospitalisation and prejudice to become one the best riders of the late 90s and early 2000s.We also look ahead to this year's Giro d’Italia Women which begins at the end of the month. The Cycling Podcast Féminin will be bringing listeners daily coverage of the race for the first time, starting on 30th May.Also on the agenda: the ambience of shopping malls, virtual sangrias and Denny’s dream of being paid in cheese.

S14 Ep43: The Dukes of Hazard

Long-time regulars on The Cycling Podcast’s Giro d’Italia coverage, in this year’s edition Matt White and Max Sciandri are directing operations, together, from the front seat of the Movistar team car. Australia and Italy, fire and ice, they make an intriguing duo, but can it be a successful one at this year’s Giro? We went behind the scenes on the day of their boldest tactical plan yet, on stage 4 of the Giro to Cosenza, to get a sense of how their partnership is galvanising the Spanish team at this year’s Giro. Daniel Friebe then summoned Matt and Max the following morning for a debrief and typically mirthful discussion of what they each bring to their roles. The Cycling Podcast would like to thank Velon for their assistance in the making of this podcast. Follow us on social media: Twitter @cycling_podcast Instagram @thecyclingpodcast Friends of the Podcast Sign up as a Friend of the Podcast at thecyclingpodcast.com to listen to new special episodes every month plus a back catalogue of more than 300 exclusive episodes.2026 Girovagando selection: You can buy this year’s Girovagando wine selection here: https://dvinecellars.com/products/cycling-podcast-giro-26.  The wines with corresponding stage numbers are as follows:  Stage 3: Mixtape Red, Georgiev & Milkov, Plovdiv (red)  Stage 4: Tenuta del Conte, Calabria Rosso, Calabria (red)   Stage 5: Vigneti del Vulture, Pipoli, Aglianico del Vulture, Basilicata (red) Stage 10: Bianco 'il Terraio’ Paterna, Tuscany (white) Stage 14: Les Crêtes Mon Blanc, Valle D’Aosta (white) Stage 20: Braida Antica Blanc, Russolo, Friuli Venezia-Giulia (white)The 11.01 Cappuccino Our regular email newsletter is now on Substack. S14 Ep36: Arrivée: Vuelta Femenina

There’s both plenty of racing and plenty of Spanish omelettes for Rose Manley and Rebecca Charlton to get their teeth stuck into in this special Arrivée episode on the Vuelta Femenina. With seven days of racing ranging from the pretty bumpy to the vertiginously mountainous, including a historic first summit finish on the Angliru, expect no shortage of drama from this first ‘Grand Tour’ of the year. With back-to-back champion Demi Vollering choosing not to compete this year, a brand new champion was set to be crowned, but who could it be? Would Tour de France Femmes champion Pauline Ferrand Prevot back up her Grand Tour credentials in Spain? Could Anna van der Breggen show that she’s back to her stage racing best? Or might this be the crowning moment for a surprising young star? Also on the agenda: free jazz race reportage, unwanted gifts and Denny Gray’s 4am McDonald’s order.Follow us on social media: Twitter @cycling_podcast Instagram @thecyclingpodcastFriends of the Podcast Sign up as a Friend of the Podcast at thecyclingpodcast.com to listen to new special episodes every month plus a back catalogue of more than 300 exclusive episodes. The 11.01 Cappuccino Our regular email newsletter is now on Substack. Meltdown: The Race to Escape Nuclear Disaster | Part 2: Zone of Alienation

This episode of KM0 by The Cycling Podcast is available for everyone to listen to for a limited time before it moves across to our Friends of the Podcast feed shortly. If you enjoy it, and are not already a Friend, consider subscribing annually or monthly to support The Cycling Podcast. The support of our Friends of the Podcast subscribers enables us to deliver our weekly and daily Grand Tour coverage free for all. Sign up at thecyclingpodcast.com This week the Giro d’Italia will start behind the old Iron Curtain for the third time in five years, specifically in Bulgaria. For Italians, the Giro has always represented the sporting highlight of May – but for those living in Eastern Europe, for half a century, the Peace Race took centre stage. The 1986 edition was an unforgettable one, for reasons that had nothing to do with cycling. Ten days before the race was due to start in Kyiv, 90 kilometres from there, at the Chernobyl power plant, there was an explosion in one of the reactors. The ensuing catastrophe turned into the worst disaster in the history of nuclear power. Hundreds of billions of dollars, hundreds of thousands of Soviet soldiers and hundreds of thousands of evacuations would be required to restore at least the illusion of control. Meanwhile, a cover-up of unprecedented scale and unimaginable consequences began – and allowed the 1986 Peace Race to start in Kyiv. In the last instalment of his two-part series, Daniel Friebe covers what happened when the Peace Race peloton left Kyiv and over subsequent months and years, as the horrific implications of Chernobyl slowly revealed themselves. Meltdown: The Race to Escape Nuclear Disaster is a series written and produced by Daniel Friebe. Episode art is by Daniel Friebe.

S14 Ep32: 2026 Giro d’Italia | The Preview

On Friday, the first Grand Tour of the season rolls out from Bulgaria, not Italy – and, as always, we’ll be there, on the ground, to bring you all the action from the Giro d’Italia. This year’s “Corsa Rosa” starts here, with our race preview and the troika who’ll take you on the journey to Rome over the next three weeks: Daniel Friebe, Brian Nygaard and Michele Pelacci. Before sinking our teeth into the Giro, though, we discuss the first big headline of the week: Paul Seixas’s announcement that he’ll be riding the Tour de France. It’s then time to talk about the Giro, focusing first on the favourites, then moving into the beautiful canvas upon which Jonas Vingegaard et al. will hopefully create cycling art over the next three weeks.  EPISODE SPONSORNordVPN Get NordVPN two-year plan + four months extra ➼ https://nordvpn.com/tcp It’s risk-free with Nord’s 30-day money-back guarantee.Follow us on social media: Twitter @cycling_podcast Instagram @thecyclingpodcastFriends of the Podcast Sign up as a Friend of the Podcast at thecyclingpodcast.com to listen to new special episodes every month plus a back catalogue of more than 300 exclusive episodes.2026 Girovagando selection: You can buy this year’s Girovagando wine selection here: https://dvinecellars.com/products/cycling-podcast-giro-26.  The wines with corresponding stage numbers are as follows:  Stage 3: Mixtape Red, Georgiev & Milkov, Plovdiv (red)  Stage 4: Tenuta del Conte, Calabria Rosso, Calabria (red)   Stage 5: Vigneti del Vulture, Pipoli, Aglianico del Vulture, Basilicata (red) Stage 10: Bianco 'il Terraio’ Paterna, Tuscany (white) Stage 14: Les Crêtes Mon Blanc, Valle D’Aosta (white) Stage 20: Braida Antica Blanc, Russolo, Friuli Venezia-Giulia (white)The 11.01 Cappuccino Our regular email newsletter is now on Substack. S14 Ep31: Girovino!! | The Wines of the 2026 Giro

Every year, as the Giro d'Italia approaches, we ease into our coverage with an episode that has — ostensibly — nothing to do with racing bikes. Any listeners with a passing interest in wine, stay with us. Everyone else, there are plenty of other episodes in our build-up to the Grande Partenza that will be more up your strada. The Cycling Podcast has been on the ground at every Giro since 2016, and the lesson we keep relearning is that these races can't really be separated from the places that host them. The culture, the land, the things it grows and makes — all of it is part of the story. It was with that in mind that we headed to D Vine Cellars HQ in London last week for the unveiling of our 2026 Girovagando selection (link to buy and list of wines in the shownotes below), with Greg Andrews the master of ceremonies. Follow us on social media: Twitter @cycling_podcast Instagram @thecyclingpodcast 2026 Girovagando selection: You can buy this year’s Girovagando selection here: https://dvinecellars.com/products/cycling-podcast-giro-26.  The wines with corresponding stage numbers are as follows:  Stage 3: Mixtape Red, Georgiev & Milkov, Plovdiv (red)  Stage 4: Tenuta del Conte, Calabria Rosso, Calabria (red)   Stage 5: Vigneti del Vulture, Pipoli, Aglianico del Vulture, Basilicata (red) Stage 10: Bianco 'il Terraio’ Paterna, Tuscany (white) Stage 14: Les Crêtes Mon Blanc, Valle D’Aosta (white) Stage 20: Braida Antica Blanc, Russolo, Friuli Venezia-Giulia (white)Friends of the Podcast Sign up as a Friend of the Podcast at thecyclingpodcast.com to listen to new special episodes every month plus a back catalogue of more than 300 exclusive episodes. The 11.01 Cappuccino Our regular email newsletter is now on Substack. S14 Ep30: Ineos Turn to AI to Get the Pulse Racing

The spring Classics campaign has come to an end and the Giro d'Italia is just around the corner. To bridge the gap between the two, and with Daniel Friebe absent as he prepares for the Giro, Lionel Birnie is joined by Tudor Pro Cycling's Larry Warbasse to wrap up the first part of the season, look ahead to the first Grand Tour of the year and react to some huge sponsorship news which may help Ineos Grenadiers challenge for the Tour de France once again. In part one Larry updates on the Tour of the Alps, where he and a lot of riders were fine-tuning their form ahead of the Giro and one of his teammates made a rapid and successful transition from speed skating to elite level cycling with a stage win. He also talks about his version of the all-day-breakfast and heat training indoors. In the second part, Lionel reports back from the big reveal which confirmed a new title sponsor for Ineos Grenadiers. From the Giro d'Italia they will be Netcompany-Ineos thanks to backing from a Danish IT company that is pumping in a figure thought to be around €100m over five years. The target is for the team to win an eighth Tour de France in the next five years, but its the introduction of Netcompany's AI software, Pulse, which makes this more than just a sponsorship deal. Pulse, which is used at several major airports, including Heathrow, will be used to help the team make 'better decisions more often'. We ask whether its use can extend beyond logistics and training and start to influence racing strategy and tactics. In the final part, we tie up all the loose ends from the spring and turn our attentions towards the Giro before handing over to Daniel and co for daily coverage of the Corsa Rosa, which starts in Bulgaria on Friday, May 8.Image courtesy of Netcompany-Ineos.Follow us on social media: Twitter @cycling_podcast Instagram @thecyclingpodcastFriends of the Podcast Sign up as a Friend of the Podcast at thecyclingpodcast.com to listen to new special episodes every month plus a back catalogue of more than 300 exclusive episodes. The 11.01 Cappuccino Our regular email newsletter is now on Substack. Sign up at thecyclingpodcast.com Next week the Giro d’Italia will start behind the former Iron Curtain for the third time in five years, specifically in Bulgaria. In the first of this two-part series, Daniel Friebe journeys back in time to the moment of the disaster. He speaks to men who were supposed to travel to Kyiv and didn’t, and to riders who had no option but to race while a vast radioactive cloud spread across Europe and beyond. Part two will cover what happened when the Peace Race peloton left Kyiv, and over subsequent months and years, as the horrific implications of Chernobyl slowly revealed themselves. That will be released on Wednesday May 6, the day before we travel to Bulgaria to kick off this year’s Girovagando - our daily coverage from the Giro d’Italia. Meltdown: The Race to Escape Nuclear Disaster is a series written and produced by Daniel Friebe. Sign up at thecyclingpodcast.comTo say that Paul Seixas has taken the world of professional cycling by storm this spring would be an understatement of similar proportions to the 19-year-old Frenchman’s gift for riding bicycles. His victory in Flèche Wallonne was just the latest in a series of jaw-dropping performances in 2026. That first win in a World Tour one-day race was preceded and no doubt informed and abetted by an equally remarkable display in Itzulia or the Tour of the Basque Country, where Seixas took three stage wins and cruised to the overall title. Daniel Friebe was in Spain that week to witness the definitive explosion of a cycling superstar. S14 Ep20: Sweet Little Lies

The Cycling Podcast returns in perhaps the most eagerly anticipated week of the season, to look back in more detail at Sunday’s Tour of Flanders and ahead to Paris-Roubaix at the weekend. Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie are joined by former team manager and press chief Brian Nygaard as we reflect on the story that dominated the build-up to Flanders: Remco Evenepoel’s shock announcement that he would start for Redbull-BORA-hansgrohe after months of denials. Are the media entitled to feel upset at being misled, or is all ultimately fair in love and the war for eyeballs? We hear what Hugo Coorevits thinks, and also what’s on his mind ahead of the “Hell of the North”. Do only the redoubtable pavés of northern France stand between Tadej Pogačar and his next piece of history – or will Van der Poel, Van Aert et al. halt his march towards a Monument Grand Slam? EPISODE SPONSORSIndeed If you are looking to hire someone for your company, maybe the best way isn’t to search for a candidate but to match with Indeed. S14 Ep17: Double Whammy

The Cycling Podcast returns to recap the latest round of cobbled Classics, with the E3 Saxo Classic and In Flanders Fields neatly teeing up the Ronde van Vlaanderen this weekend.Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie examine both races in detail, looking at how Alpecin-Premier Tech made it another superb weekend for them. First up was Mathieu van der Poel’s latest cobbled clinic in E3…not that he didn’t leave us guessing until the final kilometre. A similarly nailbiting pursuit match the following day saw MvdP reunited with old foe Wout Van Aert, though it was Jasper Philipsen who finally prevailed. We ask what this all means for the big one at the weekend, with a little help from faithful Flandrian correspondent Hugo Coorevits. We also cover the big talking points from the Volta a Catalunya, which was dominated by Jonas Vingegaard. EPISODE SPONSORSBikmo This episode of The Cycling Podcast is brought to you by Bikmo cycle insurance – because let's face it, things happen.
