When the Grave Isn't the Final Word: Hope in the Roman Catacombs What the early church carved into a place of death, and the anchor that still holds in grief Just outside the old city of Rome, beneath the ground, there are miles of narrow tunnels called the catacombs, and they were the burial place of the early church. Going down into them is one of the stops on our Rome trip, and it may be the most powerful place you can stand to understand the faith of the first Christians. We have already gone into a prison and walked an ancient road in this series. Today we go back underground, but into a very different kind of dark, and what the early believers left on these walls is not despair. It is hope. The catacombs are miles of narrow tunnels dug into soft rock beneath the outskirts of Rome, running level by level, sometimes four or five stories deep, and in places even deeper. Laid end to end they would stretch for hundreds of miles. Carved into the walls are tomb after tomb, resting places for tens of thousands of the Christian dead, including many martyrs who died for their faith in Jesus. In simple terms, the catacombs are the cemetery of the early church. Why Did the Early Christians Build the Catacombs? Not to hide. You may have heard that Christians used the catacombs as secret hideouts to escape persecution, but that is the movie version, and it does not hold up. If believers had gone down there to hide, the guards would simply have waited for them to come back up. The real reason is more moving than that. Christians in Rome were not allowed to bury their dead inside the city, and they did not want the common Roman practice of cremation, because they believed the body would rise again one day. So they needed ground. They went outside the city, dug down, and over the years carved out a vast underground network where they laid their loved ones to rest. Where the "Underground Church" Worshiped When believers were forbidden to worship during times of persecution, they would go down into the catacombs under the cover of visiting their dead, and they would worship there among the graves. There were rooms for gathering and even for teaching, and you can still see what is left on the walls. It is part of why we still speak of the "underground church" today. In some parts of the world it remains dangerous or illegal to follow Jesus, and believers gather in back rooms and behind storefronts under the appearance of something else, just to worship the Lord. Some of Rachael's own missionary friends lead underground churches now. Hope Carved in Stone: The Fish, the Anchor, and the Good Shepherd Among all those graves, the early Christians painted and carved symbols that still undo you when you learn what they mean. The most common is a simple fish, scratched into the stone again and again. The Greek word for fish is ichthys, and each letter stood for a word in the phrase "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior," the whole gospel packed into a symbol you could draw in a second. When a believer saw a fish on a tomb, they knew the person buried there belonged to Jesus. You also see the anchor, which comes straight out of Hebrews. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and reliable and one which enters within the veil. (Hebrews 6:19) Think about carving that on the grave of someone you loved and lost, someone who may have died for their faith. They were carving the word hope into the stone. And over and over you see the Good Shepherd, a painted image of a shepherd carrying a lamb across His shoulders. They put Jesus carrying a sheep on the walls of a graveyard because they believed death had not snatched their loved ones away. The Shepherd was carrying them home. Refusing to Let the Grave Have the Last Word These were not people in denial about death. They were surrounded by it. They had watched people they loved be killed for following Jesus. They dug these tunnels with their own hands and carried the bodies down themselves. They knew exactly how real and how permanent death was. And in the middle of it, they wrote hope on the walls. They did not simply bury their dead and leave, either. They came back, especially to the tombs of the martyrs, to remember them and share meals together in their memory. They came down into a place of death to eat together and hold on to the hope they had, and sometimes hope was all they had. It was the early church refusing to let the grave have the last word. Standing down there does something to your faith that is hard to put into words. We live in a culture terrified of death, doing everything it can to hide from it, unwilling even to look at aging. But when you stand among these ancient graves and learn about people who stared death in the face and stayed committed to the gospel anyway, answering death with hope, it forces a question. Do I actually believe what they believed? When I face the grave, my own or the graves of the people I love, do I have an anchor that holds? Those believers were not hoping in a nice idea. They were hoping in a risen Jesus. They had staked everything, their lives in some cases, on the fact that He rose from the dead, and that because He rose, they would too. That is the anchor. That is why they could carve hope into a tomb. It was not wishful thinking. It was resurrection. Rachael shares something on this episode she had not planned to. A couple of months ago her mom passed away, after a complicated relationship marked by mental illness and years of hard things in the family. Her mom believed in Jesus, but the illness left a gap between who she thought God was and who God really is, and she was never quite well enough to be safe or fully present in the way everyone longed for. Her mom passed the same night Rachael celebrated seeing her book on the shelf at Walmart for the first time, an emotional high and a deep loss on the same day, and it still does not make simple sense. In the weeks of grief and doubt that followed, wondering whether she would see her mom again, Rachael was praying, and the Lord said, "She's here and she's whole." Her mom was not whole here, not in body or mind, but her spirit is with Jesus. That is the image of the Shepherd carrying His sheep all the way home, and the anchor that holds in the dark, in the grief, in the moments we do not understand. The same hope those early believers carved into stone is offered to you. The empty tomb of Jesus is the reason for every little fish and anchor and shepherd down in the dark. Death is real, but for those who belong to Jesus, it is not the end. It is not the final word. The Shepherd carries His sheep all the way home. Father, thank You for the hope we have in You, a hope that is the anchor for our souls. Thank You that the earliest believers could stand in a place full of death and still cover the walls with hope, because they knew You had defeated the grave and that death would not be the end for them. I pray right now for the person who is afraid of death, or grieving someone they have lost, or living as though the grave gets the final say. Would You give them this same anchor. Would You let them see that the risen Jesus is the Good Shepherd who carries His sheep all the way home, and that because of You, we can have hope. In Jesus' name, amen. So when the ash sealed Pompeii, it sealed a living, breathing example of the exact culture the apostles knew. The same empire. The same streets and shops and customs Paul walked among. The ash that destroyed Pompeii also protected it. It covered everything and sealed it, and it stayed sealed for almost seventeen hundred years. When it was finally uncovered, and archaeologists are still uncovering parts of it today, what they found was not the usual ruins you see across Italy. It was a Roman city frozen in time, frozen at the exact moment the world Paul was writing to was alive. You walk on the original stone streets, with ruts worn into the stone by cartwheels and raised stepping stones where people crossed to keep their feet out of the mud. You pass homes with paint still on the walls and frescoes that still hold their color after two thousand years. You see shops and what look like fast food counters, with holes in the stone where jars of hot food once sat, right near the theaters. There are public bathhouses and marketplaces and meeting places. And there is graffiti, real words scratched into the walls by real people, election notices, advertisements, someone boasting about their wealth, even love notes with an insult scratched in beside them. Ordinary human life, preserved so completely you can still read it off the walls. Most of the world we read about in Scripture is gone. We can read about it and imagine it, but we cannot touch it. Pompeii you can touch. When you read Paul's letters to churches in cities like this one and wonder what it was actually like to live there, what the streets and homes and markets looked like, Pompeii lets you walk through the answer instead of picturing it. That is why we go. It takes the world of your Bible and helps you understand it in your body. Paul stops being a figure in a stained glass window and becomes a man who walked streets like these, preached to people who lived in homes like these, and grabbed meals at counters like these. Pompeii had no idea what was coming. They did not understand volcanoes. They saw a mountain, and even with Vesuvius right there in view, they opened their shops and went about their day. They made their bread. Actual loaves have been found still in the ovens. People were in the middle of meals and errands and an ordinary day, and no one woke up thinking it was their last. They thought they had time. In a matter of hours the whole city was gone. And walking through it, you cannot help but think about how we live the same way, sure there will always be more days ahead to deal with what matters most, to finally do the thing God is asking of us, to turn back toward Him. James says our lives are brief and not ours to schedule. He wrote it in that same New Testament world. Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit." Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. For you are just a vapor that appears for a little while, and then vanishes away. (James 4:13-14) Here for a moment, then gone. Walking through Pompeii is walking through that verse. Jesus told a story that could almost be about Pompeii. A man had a great harvest and told himself he would build bigger barns, store up all his goods, and finally relax, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said to him, "You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?" So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. (Luke 12:20-21) Jesus was not trying to scare that man. He was trying to wake him up before it was too late, to say stop building your whole life on things that vanish in a night, and put your focus on what will last. That is what Pompeii asks of anyone who walks its streets. Not fear, but waking up to the fact that the decisions you make either push you toward God or away from Him. If today were the day, have you built your life on the one thing that cannot be buried or taken away? The people of Pompeii thought they had tomorrow. We think it too. The strange gift of a place like that is the reminder that no one is owed another day, and that the invitation to go all in for God is always for today. Father, thank You for this life, and for every ordinary day in it as a gift. We so easily live as though we have endless time, and we put things off, even the things that matter to us most. Would You wake us up to what really lasts, and help us build our lives on things that do not vanish. I want to pray for the person who has been putting off turning toward You, who keeps thinking there will be a better time or that they need to get it together first. Would You help them see that today is the day, that You are here right now, ready to be found. Make us rich toward You, and help us respond to Your call and live for You. In Jesus' name, amen. Pompeii is so large it would take days to see all of it, so we focus on one section for reasons Rachael explains in person. When timing allows, we also visit nearby Herculaneum, another town Vesuvius buried that is still being carefully excavated. Do you have to be a history person to get something out of Pompeii? Finding Your People: You Were Never Meant to Walk Alone What Acts 28:15 and an ancient Roman road show us about the gift of community There's a moment on the Via Appia, the ancient road Paul walked into Rome, that most of us read right past in Acts 28. Once you see it, it changes how you think about Christian community and what it means to find your people. Last week we went down into the dark of the Mamertine, where Paul wrote his final words. This week we come back up out of the city and onto the road. It was the first great Roman highway and the road into Rome from the south, and it helped inspire the saying that all roads lead to Rome. Long stretches are still walkable today on the original black basalt paving stones, laid down more than three hundred years before Jesus was born. When our groups walk it, we're not walking near where the story happened. We're walking the road the story happened on. By the time Paul reaches this road, he has survived a shipwreck, months of hardship, and a long imprisonment, and he is arriving in Rome as a prisoner in chains. He had written to the church in Rome years earlier and told them he longed to see them, but he had never been there and had never met most of them face to face. He is worn down by the very call that put him on this road. Believers from Rome walked out to meet him, some as far as forty-three miles from the city. And from there the brothers and sisters, when they heard about us, came as far as the Market of Appius and the Three Inns to meet us; and when Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage. (Acts 28:15) Word reached the church that Paul was coming, and they didn't wait at the gate. One group walked about forty-three miles to the Market of Appius. Another came about thirty-three miles to the Three Inns. On foot, to meet a man most of them had never met, so he could walk that last stretch into the city beside his people. The Greek word behind "took courage" is tharsos: confidence, boldness, the strength to face what's coming. Nothing about Paul's circumstances changed in that moment. The chains stayed on. The trial was still ahead. But the weight of walking alone lifted, because his people had come for him. That's what community does. It doesn't remove the hard road. It means you don't walk it by yourself. You can have a good marriage, a full house, a church you love, and still feel lonely. That's not a lack of people. It's the ache of not having people who are walking in the same direction you are, with the same hunger for God. There's a particular kind of loneliness that comes from never having people who are walking toward Jesus alongside you, and it's one many spiritually mature women carry without naming it. This same thing happens on our trips, and I could never plan it. Women come, sometimes alone and nervous, not knowing anyone, and by the end of the week the strangers they started with have become their people. One woman last year, walking a tree-lined stretch of the Appia as the afternoon sun broke through, heard the Holy Spirit say, Welcome. I've been waiting for you. She came thinking she had chosen an adventure. She left knowing God had been drawing her all along. Whether you ever walk that road in Rome or not, you were never meant to walk your road alone. When Paul hit one of the lowest points of his life, what God sent him wasn't a vision. It was people. So here's the question I can't stop asking: who is walking your road with you right now? And if the honest answer is no one, what is one step you could take toward the kind of community that comes out to meet you? What translation does Rachael use on the podcast? The Worst Room in Rome: Paul's Last Words from the Mamertine Prison There is a prison in Rome that looks like nothing from the street, and yet it is one of the most impacting places you can stand in your whole life. It began as a cistern carved into the rock, with a hole in the ceiling for the only way in and out. Cold, dark, and sitting right above the ancient sewer, it was where Rome held its condemned before execution. According to the tradition of the church, it is where both Peter and Paul spent their final days. And it is the room where Paul wrote his last letter, the book we call 2 Timothy. This week's bonus episode in our Rome series takes you down into that room, so that words you have read a hundred times start to feel true, not just in your head but in your body. What was the Mamertine Prison? The Mamertine sits at the foot of the Capitoline Hill, right beside the Roman Forum. It was not a prison the way we think of one. Under Roman practice, prison was not the punishment. It was a holding place for enemies of the state who were waiting to die. The lower chamber, the Tullianum, started life as a cistern fed by a natural spring, and prisoners were lowered or thrown in through an opening in the ceiling. The Roman historian Sallust, writing a generation before Paul, described it as a place of neglect, darkness, and stench, hideous and fearsome to behold. When the water rose, prisoners could be left sitting in it up to their necks. What happened in that room besides death? This is the part that catches your breath. There is a spring in the floor of that pit, and the water still rises today. By the tradition handed down to us, Peter led people to Jesus even down there, and used that same spring water to baptize his guards and fellow prisoners. Church tradition names two of those guards as Processus and Martinianus. So in one small room you have a spring where people were being born again, and a few feet away a dark passage that drained to the sewer and carried the bodies of the dead out to the river. New birth on one side, the grave on the other. It is a picture of the gospel itself, death and resurrection in the same place. Why does it matter that Paul wrote 2 Timothy here? Peter baptized. Paul wrote. As far as we can tell, 2 Timothy is the very last thing Paul ever wrote, sent from the bottom of that cistern to Timothy, the young man he loved like a son. Knowing where he was sitting changes how the letter reads. When he says he is being poured out and has finished the race, he is not writing from a stage or a study. He is writing in the cold, in chains, with the drain of a death cell a few feet away. What does "the Lord stood with me" mean for us today? At his first defense, no one came. Paul names the friends who left him. He asks for his coat because he is cold, and for the parchments because he still wants the Word of God near him at the end. And then he writes that even though everyone deserted him, the Lord stood with him and strengthened him. That is the heart of this episode. The Lord did not only meet Paul after he got out. He met him in it, at the very bottom. Wherever you feel forgotten today, that dungeon still preaches the same thing over you. The New Testament does not name the prison directly, but early church tradition and Roman practice both point here. Paul's request in 2 Timothy for his cloak before winter fits a cold, underground cell like this one, and the site has been honored as the place of both apostles since the early centuries of the church. Is 2 Timothy really Paul's last letter? It is widely understood to be his final letter, written during his second Roman imprisonment shortly before his death under Nero. Galatians 5:25   I remain steadfast in my calling. 1 Corinthians 15:58   God will finish the work He started in me. Philippians 1:6   I live with an eternal perspective.
