One of our all-time favorite wacky and wild films is RuPaul’s Starrbooty. Created during a lull in her career, the film revives one of Ru’s early cable-access TV characters- Starbooty—a private detective turned sex worker who lands herself in increasingly ridiculous situations. The film celebrates RuPaul’s love for sexploitation, melodrama, gratuitous nudity, and her circle of kooky friends. Many consider Starrbooty the launchpad for RuPaul’s resurgence as host of RuPaul’s Drag Race, a show that mainstreamed drag so successfully it has overshadowed many other styles and interpretations of the art form. Today, Starrbooty producer and acclaimed filmmaker André Robert Lee joins us to revisit this wonderfully twisted film and discuss the challenges and triumphs of being a queer Black creative. Netflix’s Emilia Perez is a hot mess of a movie. This musical crime drama, written and directed by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, follows a de-greenified Zoë Saldaña working as a lawyer for a Mexican drug lord who transitions. Saldaña’s character later goes on to support the former Mexican drug lord as she attempts to atone for her criminal past by founding a nonprofit to rescue the victims of the country’s drug cartels, including her own. What could have been a powerful exploration of the struggles faced by trans people and all women in Latin America instead turns everyone into cartoons. Emilia Perez reduces the harsh realities of cartel violence and trans struggles into a gaudy spectacle, making one wonder if it was slapped together just to throw a wrench in Wicked’s awards season dominance. Adding to the controversy, new reports have surfaced about the film’s lead, transgender actress Karla Sofía Gascón, and her troubling history of racist and anti-Muslim remarks. Long before folks enjoyed watching oddball viral videos on the Internet, the only way to see these outrageous movies was to share physical video cassette tapes from person to person. One of the stars of this tape sharing phenomenon was musician Jan Terri, whose wonderfully weird music videos got the attention of a lot of people, including celebrities Marilyn Manson and his girlfriend at the time Rose McGowan. It’s Lesbian Visibillity week, where we take a look at some of the most wonderful women who have shaped Feast of Fun over the course of 20 years.  Just like no two people are alike, the relationships we develop in our lives will also be incredibly unique.  Before open relationships became more acceptable in LGBTQ+ circles, sex-positive writer Tristan Taormino was helping pave the way for people to expand their minds to new kinds of relationships. We spoke to Tristan in 2008 about her new book “Opening Up: A Guide to Creating and Sustaining Open Relationships” where she said a big factor in fufilling relationships was for people to defnine monogamy on their own terms, and that the best relationships complement each other instead of trying to meet each other halfway in everything.

One of my all time favorite musicians is blues singer Gaye Adegbalola. We first met Gaye back in 2005 at the Out Music Awards where she wowed the crowd with her audacious song “Big Ovaries” looking absolutely stunning wearing a white tuxedo with tails that complimented her silver shock of hair and dark skin. Gaye is not your ordinary blues musician, like us she has a sharp sense of humor and passion for restorative justice. Dreamgirls, the Broadway musical based on the showbiz aspirations of legends like Little Richard, James Brown, Diana Ross and the Supremes, is about as perfect as a musical can be. It lands running with a wonderful percussive bongo beat and takes us on a roller coaster ride through the struggles Black entertainers faced in the past and how they changed the world for the better. The breakout song “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” became a #1 hit on the R&B Billboard charts when it was released in 1982 and launched Jennifer Holliday into superstardom. Our friend musician and actor Robert Cornelius is now playing the role of music producer Marty in the new production of Dreamgirls at the McCarter Theater in Princeton, NJ.
