There isn’t a lot that I can say about this film that you don’t already know – it’s a classic, there’s no two ways about that. It’s not only one of the greatest horror films of the 1980s but one of the great horror films of all time. But if you’re not old enough to have seen it in 1982 when it came out, you might be wondering why it was so scary to those of us who were. And for those who already know, it turns out there was another haunting that made news just before POLTERGEIST was written that’s even more terrifying – and hits a lot closer to home.  Have a question or comment? In 1986, the town of Southington, Connecticut, was in an uproar. Normally, a place known for its perfect small-town charm, it had been thrown into a frenzy of media chaos, thanks to a family that was reporting that their new house was haunted.A check of real estate records in town revealed that the house was indeed the former Hallahan Funeral Home. The idea of living in what was once a funeral home did cause some concerns for the Snedekers but what were they supposed to do? They were nearly broke and every cent they had was being committed to Phillip’s cancer treatment. It would be fine. It was just an old funeral home. What could go wrong?Have a question or comment? In 1981, a young man in Connecticut took the idea of the insanity plea to the next level. He claimed that he was innocent of the murder he’d committed – he’d only done it because he was possessed by a demon. While the previous two Conjuring films took the intrepid duo, Ed and Lorraine Warren, to haunted houses, this was a new kind of horror story for the pair. And while the film takes the demon plot and runs wild with it in the last half of the movie, the first half is loosely based on the real story of the first time that demonic possession was brought up as a defense in a U.S. court.Have a question or comment? “It was chaos, things started flying around, people were screaming.” In 1977, hot on the heels of the publicity they received after the Amityville Horror case – which is show in the cold open of the film – the Warrens claimed that they investigated the happenings in Enfield, undoubtedly drawn there by all the press the case was getting at the time. Before they even arrived at the Hodgson home, several independent observers dismissed the case as a hoax carried out by "attention-hungry" children, but the Warrens would, of course, state that it was a case of demonic possession.Have a question or comment? This is, of course, based on a true story. But how true is this story? Well, as you’re just about to hear, NOT VERY. Truth, as they say, is often much stranger than fiction, but in some cases, you actually have to FIND the truth first. And when it comes to THE CONJURING – and with Ed and Lorraine Warren themselves – the truth is a very, very elusive thing.New Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/troytaylorodditiesCheck out our updated website and sign up for our newsletter at AmericanHauntingsPodcast.comWant an episode every week, plus other awesome perks and discounts? Maybe what gets called a DEMON isn’t what the variations of Christian churches thinks it is. Their narrow definition leaves out an awful lot of other faiths around the world and since people believed in spirits that attacked and even possessed people long before Christianity became a thing, then they might be something else... We can call them whatever we want but whatever they really are, one thing seems clear – that they’re very scary and very dangerous. On May 2, 1962, a Haitian man named Clairvius Narcisse died of a mysterious illness – or so it seemed at the time. Then, a little over 18 years later, his sister, Angelina, was shopping in a local market and saw a terrifying, vacant-eyed man lurching toward her on the street. Angelina screamed, although not because the poor man in the ragged, threadbare clothing was so frightening on his own. She screamed because the dead man was her brother – Clairvius Narcisse.New Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/troytaylorodditiesCheck out our updated website and sign up for our newsletter at AmericanHauntingsPodcast.comWant an episode every week, plus other awesome perks and discounts? "The Phillip Experiment" has become known as one of the most famous paranormal studies of all time, so it’s not really that surprising that someone decided to use it as inspiration for a film. In 1972, a group of researchers in Canada were not only convinced that something or someone could actually be created by the power of thought alone and that it was absolutely possible to think something into existence, but some believe they finally achieved their goal by conjuring up a ghost that they called PHILLIP. New Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/troytaylorodditiesCheck out our updated website and sign up for our newsletter at AmericanHauntingsPodcast.comWant an episode every week, plus other awesome perks and discounts? Special Christmas Eve Episode of the Podcast! In centuries past, our ancestors had a much different idea of the holiday season than we do today. In those days, the winter nights were long and dark. It was a time of snow, cold, and ice and days and weeks huddled around the fire waiting for warmer weather to return. Oil lamps, candles, and fireplaces were the only sources of light to keep back the encroaching shadows. It was the perfect time for ghosts. In the Victorian era, Winter was considered the spookiest time of year, beginning with Halloween and ending with the spring thaw. All the greatest fictional ghost stories of the time were set in the gloomy winter months and during the holidays, like Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” for instance. So, if you’ve ever wondered why the singer mentions “Scary Ghost Stories” in the song, THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR, well, now you know….So, here’s a ghost story for you to listen to while you’re going over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house this week. Happy Holidays from Troy and Cody from American Hauntings! In August 1928, a woman from a tiny town in Missouri was arrested on two counts of first-degree murder. As you might imagine, the arrest of a 56-year-old woman with a reputation as a nurse and healer in the community where she’d lived wasn’t your run-of-the-mill news story in the late 1920s. It was a shocking event to people who lived in nearby St. Louis, but those from Franklin County, where the woman lived weren’t as surprised.Check out our updated website and sign up for our newsletter at AmericanHauntingsPodcast.comWant an episode every week, plus other awesome perks and discounts? There are stories, rumors, tall tales, and whispers that tell very different stories about the fate of Red Hamilton, John Dillinger's right-hand man for many a heist. There is speculation about where he died, when he actually died, and whether his ghost – or at least the ghost of the man buried in that grave – still haunts a house where someone breathed his last. It was June 6, 1980, in the normally quiet suburb of Libertyville, Illinois. Located in the heart of Lake County, it was one of the most affluent communities surrounding Chicago. The residents of Libertyville weren’t accustomed to violent crime – those kinds of things don’t happen here, they’d often say. On a windy hill near the small Southern Illinois town of Equality is a decaying mansion that was known for decades as the region’s most haunted house. It was a place dubbed Hickory Hill by its builder and over the years, it’s been many things – a plantation house, farmhouse, a tourist attraction, and many believe, a chamber of horrors for men and women brought to this house in chains. Thanks to the long-standing legend of the terrible things that occurred in the house, locals eventually began referring to it as “The Old Slave House.”Check out our updated website and sign up for our newsletter at AmericanHauntingsPodcast.comWant an episode every week, plus other awesome perks and discounts? Hidden away in the deep, dark woods of the Chattahoochee National Forest was once an isolated mansion that was the object of terror to most of the people who lived in the small town of Summerville, Georgia.A terror that lingers to this day.It was on the chilly night of December 12 that year that a secluded house became a place of torture and bloodshed. The name of the house – Corpsewood Manor – seems like something right out of a horror novel, but on that dark night, the terror was unbelievably real.Check out our updated website and sign up for our newsletter at AmericanHauntingsPodcast.comWant an episode every week, plus other awesome perks and discounts? The Myrtles Plantation, located in the small town of Saint Francisville, Louisiana holds the rather dubious record of hosting more ghostly phenomena than just about any other house in the country. But what could be more dubious than the honor itself?Well, that would be the questionable history that's long been presented to explain why the house is so haunted in the first place. Known for decades as one of the most haunted houses in America, the Myrtles attracts an almost endless stream of visitors each year, many of whom come searching for ghosts -- and there seems to be little doubt that the house is haunted. It's the reason for the haunting that's been called into question. For several generations, tales have been told that are blatantly false. However, the Myrtles, according to hundreds of people who've encountered the resident spirits, is indeed haunted, just not for the reasons we've been told.A simple check of historical records reveals the true story, which you're just about to hear. As is often the case, the true story is not as sensational as the story everyone, including myself, grew up with. But it's still strange and macabre. The history of the plantation is filled with death, tragedy, and despair, which leads us to wonder why the fanciful history was created in the first place. Throughout the past year, we’ve introduced you to a very strange collection of stories about people who have gone missing – disappeared without a trace, never to return. But as an end of the year "thank you" for all the great feedback, story ideas, texts, emails, and support that we’ve gotten from you this season, we wanted to offer you one last story. We’ll warn you though – this isn’t your typical missing person story. This one has a bit of a twist, which is why I wanted to save it to the very end.
