When we first meet the family in the opening minutes of the film, they're moving into a large Rhode Island farmhouse that seems perfect for them.

It's on a nice piece of land

with lots of room for their five daughters, and yes, it was expensive for 1970, but Roger and

Carolyn Perrin know it's going to be worth it. It's a house where their girls, Andrea, Nancy, Christine,

Cindy, and April could grow up in a place where maybe they'd live for the rest of

their lives. But things seem ominous when they arrive, when their dog Sadie refuses to

enter the house. The family soon discovers a boarded-up cellar and paranormal events occur within the

first few nights. Every clock in the house stops at 307 a.m.

Carolyn wakes up with new bruises each morning,

and then Sadie is found dead in the yard.

Then Carolyn and Christine both encounter a malevolent spirit.

Carolyn then contacts renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, during which Lorraine,

who's a clairvoyant, sees that a dark spirit has attached itself to the family so that even

leaving the house won't free them of its terrible influence. Research soon reveals that the house

once belonged to a witch and a child murderer

named Bathsheba Sherman, who sacrificed her weak old baby to the devil and then committed suicide

in 1863 at 307 a.m. Before she hung herself in the backyard, she cursed everyone who would ever

inhabit her land.

And since that time, there have been reports of murders and suicides in the houses that were built on the property.

During a seance in the cellar with the Warrens, Carolyn is possessed by Bathsheba.

Lorraine sees the spirit of a woman that Bathsheba had possessed long ago

and forced to kill her child, realizing she'll force Carolyn to do the same. The warrants conclude
