In 2016, at age 47, Bethany Winters was diagnosed with Grade 3 Stage IIB Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. What followed was a year of intensive treatment, including chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and total hysterectomy. In this episode, Bethany shares 10 Things about breast cancer survivorship, and how it's not ever really over even when declared "cancer-free." This is a tender and important conversation. This episode originally aired in 2021. I had no idea how much I needed this conversation with actor, producer, director, writer, and musician Fiona Rene. In just one hour she taught me the value of believing in yourself above all else, more than anyone else, almost to the point of delusion. You might know Fiona Rene from her roles on Lincoln Lawyer, NCIS: Hawaii, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and her leading role in the #1 CBS show Tracker, but Fiona and I immediately connected over our Oklahoma roots. In this ONE THING conversation - where I ask my guests about the ONE THING they would tell you - we talk about self-confidence, the balance between "being" and "doing" and why believing in yourself above all else is the key to success. This episode with my friend Amy Ortloff originally aired in August 2021 with the title Teaching People To Grieve With Me. As part of my effort to highlight the best of my past episodes, I wanted to replay this conversation, which is one of the most important I've ever shared. Content warning: Child loss and suicide In 2017, Amy Ortloff lost her middle child Ryan to suicide. Ryan was just 17 years old. Less than a week after his death, Amy took to her personal Facebook page and starting sharing every single day. She began by sharing stories about Ryan, family memories and examples of the kind of kid he was. She didn't want her child to be forgotten. As the weeks went by, deep in grief, Amy also started sharing her own experiences of this devastating time she was living through. She shared what she was learning in therapy, she set and shared her personal boundaries for interaction for those in her small town Oklahoma community. Amy's sharing was raw and vulnerable. It was heartbreaking and powerful. I made a point to read her posts every day that first year after Ryan. This episode is about the effects of that real-time sharing during the hardest time of her life, the positive and the negative. Amy was teaching us how to grieve with her, and it made an enormous impact on me long before I ever wrote a book about sharing stuff. If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or text TALK to 741741. Please share this episode with anyone who needs to hear it. This episode is the very core of what 10 Things To Tell You is about: reflection, growth, and great conversations. And this conversation happens to be with one of my oldest friends and very favorite person to be on the microphone with: Meg Tietz. We're talking through the many ways we've changed in the last 10 years - since 2015 - in our home & family, career, and spiritually/emotionally. We have so much to say about our mid-30s, mid-2010s selves, and we're encouraging YOU to reflect on your own changes from the last decade. Meg is a writer, speaker, voice over artist, and internet pioneer. I have been following in her footsteps since high school, and she is responsible for giving me my first shot at podcasting when she launched the Sorta Awesome show in 2015. Together we created and produced Smartest Person in the Room and now we're both creating regularly on Substack. In this conversation, Annie and I talk about how dreams don't always look the way you planned, like living near your hometown, owning a bookstore, even (especially?) writing a book! I have been waiting for the right moment to feature this conversation with interior designer Michelle Fahmy, founder of Haus of Meeshie, about bringing bold color and unique style to your home and life. For the past two years, Meeshie has helped bring fresh life to our family's home in Los Angeles, bringing a whole new vibe to our living spaces. Since I've long preached the power of our spaces on this show, I knew Meeshie (with her very bold style) would be the perfect person to talk us through this topic. But this conversation ended up being about way more than just paint and wallpaper. Over the last few years I’ve watched my friend, Jessica Turner, privately and publicly walk through her husband’s coming out and their subsequent divorce as well as her efforts to find her equilibrium in this new family dynamic. Jessica has done it all with grace and kindness and honesty, sharing her story with incredible strength and vulnerability. Her newest book, I Thought It Would Be Better Than This, chronicles this journey and the lessons she’s learned from it. In this conversation, Jessica shares what it was like to navigate her own grief about the end of her marriage while also remaining a friend and ally to her ex-husband as he navigated coming out as gay. She shares how she was helped by journaling and therapy (two drums I will continue to bang all my days) and the rules she has for herself when it comes to sharing difficult and vulnerable things online. Jessica’s hard won wisdom is applicable to anyone dealing with disappointment. or who thought to themselves about their love life, career, parenting, or just adulthood...I thought it would be better than this. What if you want a best friend, but have no idea how to find that person? In honor of my book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs celebrating its book birthday this week, I wanted to rerun this episode from January 2021 with Heather Adams. This is a very special episode of Best Books Lately. Special because it's been awhile since we've had one, special because it's with my longtime internet friend and book twin Liz Hein, and special because we're weaving together some of the most important themes of 10 Things To Tell You: sharing your stuff, connection, and, of course, BOOKS. In this conversation, Liz and I are not only talking about the best books we've read lately (and we've both read some great things!), Liz is also sharing about the life of her father, legendary Chicago photographer Rich Hein, who passed away unexpectedly last month. As the headlines get harder, the politics more divisive, and the platforms themselves more corrupt, many of us are rethinking our social media usage in 2025. Yeah, sure, we've all said this before in the past. So we take breaks, or delete the apps off our phones, but we always come crawling back. Social media is just an ingrained part of our lives now. It's where we get our news, it's how we connect with others, it's a source of entertainment and expression. And yet...there is something different about this moment in internet history. People really are fed up, but it also seems impossible to quit cold turkey. There has to be a middle ground between spending large chunks of our day scrolling and walking away from social media completely. In this episode I'm walking through my own personal process of changing my relationship with my phone. Sometimes you read a friend's book and you're jealous they wrote something this good. This is how I felt when I read writer and podcast Melanie Shankle's latest Here Be Dragons: Treading the Deep Waters of Motherhood, Mean Girls, and Generational Trauma. This book is about Melanie's very complicated relationship with her mom, woven together with her own Big Feelings about the mean girls that took over her daughter's high school experience. As someone who regularly preaches that all of us should be sharing our stuff, my jaw dropped at some of the stories that Melanie is able to share so well. In this conversation, Melanie and I talk about all of those things. It's a tender topic, but Melanie is, as always, full of humor and wisdom in the face of it all. Now THIS is truly a conversation you won't hear anywhere else. My friend, television show runner Stacy Rukeyser, joins me to talk about making R-rated art when you're a mom. Stacy has written on some really great shows over the years, but she was tasked with creating Netflix's first foray into erotica with her show Sex/Life back in 2021 and it brought up some questions about making this type of creative content when you're a mom. Stacy rightly points out that men likely wouldn't be asked (or be asking) the same type of questions, but it was a fascinating conversation to explore. Stacy shares her fascinating Hollywood career trajectory, the column that broke open a One Tree Hill scandal, and the differences working in female-led writer's rooms. Continuing my look back on 15 years of working on the internet (and the last decade as working as a podcaster), I'm addressing a question that I've gotten fairly often recently: Any advice on starting a podcast? Based on my own mistakes working on three different shows, and observations about the podcast listening community and industry, in this episode I'm sharing what I would do if I started a new podcast today. While I speaking pretty specifically about podcasting in this episode, I also think that a lot of what I talk about applies to most creative endeavors on the internet in 2025. I'm talking about creativity, marketing, mindset, equipment, and more. And at the end I give a little pep talk that maybe we all need. Continuing my look back on 15 years of working on the internet (and the last decade as working as a podcaster), I'm addressing a question that I've gotten fairly often recently: Any advice on starting a podcast?Based on my own mistakes working on three different shows, and observations about the podcast listening community and industry, in this episode I'm sharing what I would do if I started a new podcast today. While I speaking pretty specifically about podcasting in this episode, I also think that a lot of what I talk about applies to most creative endeavors on the internet in 2025.I'm talking about creativity, marketing, mindset, equipment, and more. And at the end I give a little pep talk that maybe we all need.FULL SHOW NOTES HERE MENTIONED in this episode:Audacity recording/editing softwareRiverside.fm software for remote recordingSingle microphone I used for years recording in personCurrent microphone I use RELATED episodes:Ep 124: Behind the Scenes of PodcastingEp 205: 10 Things All Podcast Fans Should KnowEp 253: Regrets and Reflections After 15 Years of Working On the Internet SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode!CLICK HERE for episode show notesFOLLOW @10ThingsToTellYou on InstagramFOLLOW @10ThingsToTellYou on FacebookSIGN UP for episode emails, links, and show notesJOIN Laura Tremaine’s SECRET SUBSTACKBUY THE BOOK: Share Your Stuff. This month marks FIFTEEN years that I have been pursuing a career primarily by sharing myself on the internet. Starting with the Hollywood Housewife blog in January 2010, then building a social media presence, then becoming a podcaster and an author, and I have so many stories and thoughts to share about the last decade and a half. On this episode, I'm talking about the things I did right, the things I definitely got wrong, and how I've evolved right along with the World Wide Web. No matter the question, reading is the answer. And in a year starting off like 2025 is, we certainly need a lot of answers to life's questions. I am thrilled to welcome fellow Angeleno bookworm Traci Thomas (host of The Stacks podcast) to talk about the most anticipated new book releases of 2025. We talk about novels and nonfiction by debut and beloved authors publishing this year and sorry not sorry about this conversation that will send your book budget soaring. There are so many good books to look forward to in the next six months. Also in this episode, Traci really gives me a lot to think about in terms of how we talk about books and why it's okay to be publicly critical of books that don't work for us. As an author who is jumpy about that concept, Traci really shifted my perspective on this. It may already be January, but it's time for my annual year-end reflection with 10 of the biggest things I learned that I hope will also resonate with you. 2024 was a weird year in so many ways. My lessons were all over the place, from examining self-confidence vs. self-esteem, finding out who I am in a crisis, being honest about what home renovations can bring up emotionally, facing my addiction to the news cycle, and discovering the big thing that motivates our family decisions. It was a year full of light bulb moments. I hope this helps you reflect upon your own lessons, struggles, and triumphs of the last year. My friend Nora Dahlia Zelevansky is a journalist, a novelist, a wellness writer, and now she's a romance author! As we celebrate the release of her latest book PICK UP, Nora and I chat about her writing trajectory, the differences between publishing and marketing the romance genre, and why she decided to write this book using a different name. We also talk about how fiction helps us process our pasts, and especially how our high school selves might not have grasped the full story, and how we wrestle with that in adulthood. One of the books that has made the biggest impression on me in the last few years is The Perfectionist's Guide To Losing Control by Katherine Morgan Schafler. I have talked about this book EVERYWHERE and insisted that even people who do not self-identify as "perfectionists" would get something out of it. So you can imagine that I was thrilled with the Secret Stuff members chose TPGTLC as a book club pick and I was doubly thrilled when author Katherine Morgan Schafler agreed to attend our regular monthly book club meeting to discuss it. JOIN THE SECRET STUFF BOOK CLUB HERE This episode is a replay of our book club discussion that was held over zoom, where Katherine and I held a great conversation about some of the major points of the book (including the five different types of "perfectionists"), and then Secret Stuff members got to ask her questions. I loved our conversation so much that I wanted everyone to hear it (and to read the book!). If you like these types of book club meetings, consider joining the Secret Stuff Book Club for 2025. I joined twitter in 2009 and for 15 years - until this very month - it has been my favorite social media platform. The one place where I am only a consumer and not a creator. The place where I met my earliest online friends. The place where I made most of my best online memories following breaking news, political, scandal, and pop culture. And the only other person I know who has been obsessed with twitter for as long as I have been? None other than friend and podcaster Jamie Golden. Jamie and I have shared many obsessions over the years - and I write about her in The Life Council as the Fellow Obsessive friend - but our love of twitter has always been our biggest shared passion. And despite saying numerous times over the years that we'd never leave, we both decided in the last few weeks to depart our formerly favorite space. And thus, a funeral for twitter. In this conversation, Jamie and I talk about our earliest days on twitter, why we loved it so much, our favorite moments, a few of our regrets, and, of course, why we're leaving. You don't have to care about twitter to enjoy this passionate conversation between friends. My hope for this episode is that you'll get a little glimpse into some social media history and that you'll see yourself in a discussion about how being online has changed us. Lori Zuker Briller co-founded a staffing and recruitment agency almost 20 years ago, and in the last few years she's noticed a concerning trend among the young people who are applying for positions in various industries: a decline in professionalism, a lack of understanding of the job market and job search processes, and an overall deterioration in etiquette. As a mom of two daughters herself, Lori set out to create something that would help teenagers get back to the basics of professionalism and prepare for the adult world. In this conversation, Lori and I discuss how we got here as a society (hint: Covid, a more casual culture, and a change in modern communication styles) and just a few things we can teach our teenagers to set themselves up for success. And since her question (and my answer) was about the Big Picture plan for my life, it only felt appropriate to ask Kendra to talk through it all with me here on the show. Kendra Adachi's new book is called The Plan: Manage Your Time Like A Lazy Genius and it's out everywhere on October 8, 2024. This episode is for anyone who has looked at a photo of themselves and wondered if that's what they really look like. Professional photographer Jess Koehler is my guest today as we talk through all the hangups that keep us from taking, sharing, or displaying photos of ourselves, and how we can overcome them. This is not a typical "tips and tricks" episode (although we do weave tangible and emotional tips throughout). Jess and I are talking about WHY we should document ourselves, maybe even on our hardest days. We're talking about the benefits of having professional photos taken when our camera phones have become so advanced. And, yes, we're sharing all kinds of logistics on taking photos, from finding a professional photographer to using your Apple Watch as a selfie timer. This is the latest episode in the ONE THING series, where I host conversations with interesting people and ask them the ONE THING they would tell you. You might know Joy Cho as the bright, stylish, happy face and founder of Oh Joy!, a lifestyle brand with millions of followers and whose products and designs have appeared in Target, Petco, House Beautiful (to name a few) and in collaborations with Keds, Casetify, Calpak (and more). But even with a soaring career, Joy experienced a midlife crisis after a hard season in her family and a series of professional setbacks. She tried all the things you're supposed to when you're struggling: therapy, a life coach, but there was really ONE THING that pulled her out of a long funk. In our conversation, Joy and I talk about how I fanned out on her not once but twice, how an outfit can change the way you move through the day, and why it helps to remember what we loved to do when we were kids. I knew Joy would bring wisdom and insight to the show, and of course she over delivered. This episode is inspired by Snoop Dogg at the Olympics. In the early 2000s, I worked on Snoop's short-lived MTV show Doggy Fizzle Televizzle and when I made a joke about this on social media, my DMs quickly filled with questions and I realized this was a story I hadn't told in awhile. So in this episode I'm sharing 10 weird things I've done - from watching Drew Barrymore crawl through a second-story window to calling the cops on a teenage prank gone wrong. I hope you enjoy my weird stories, but even more than that I hope that they inspire you to tell YOUR weird stories. Text a friend, post on social media, or revisit your past in your journal. This is a fun one. * A list of these weird things originally appeared in my book Share Your Stuff. August is such a crazy month - the second "new year" as it's often called, except without the fresh start and instead with the idea that we're all gearing up for school, fall chaos, and, of course, all of that bleeding into the holiday season. But I don't want the second half of the year to feel frazzled, so I'm setting myself up for (better) success with a few rules and mantras to live by. This episode originally aired in November 2021 and is a very fun departure from my usual interviews. One of the strangest things about our life in Hollywood (and there are many, many strange things) is our enormous fish tank. Every time I share a little bit about our fish tank on social media, I get flooded with questions that I mostly can't answer. So I finally recorded a conversation with someone who could! Nic Tiemens is the co-founder of Infinity Aquariums and not only does he take care of the Tremaine Tank for us every week, he has installed and maintained tanks for some of the biggest celebrities and most beautiful homes in the world. In this episode, Nic shares how he stumbled into this line of work, why you shouldn't ever get a fish tank on a whim, and the insane new project he's been working on for two years in Bel Air. My husband Jeff also joins us for part of the conversation, because he's the real reason we have a 1,500 gallon fish tank in our dining room. This episode originally aired in August 2021, and is one of my personal favorites. Ready to bust out the air mattresses? This episode is FULL of practical, logistical, and emotional tips for hosting people in your home. I'm sharing everything from the 4 things that keep (most) guests happy, to the mindset shifts that will keep you from being overwhelmed or resentful. Look, if there's one subject I can give many (many) words to, it's hosting houseguests. Since I moved to Los Angeles 20 years ago, I've hosted friends and family of all group sizes, from couch crashers in a tiny apartment to my entire extended family at our new home last month. Our lovely lake house has also been a revolving door of guests over the years, where I've become an expert at managing meals, airport pickups, activities, and downtime for families and groups. I know that having guests can be an absolute honor and also completely exhausting. I hope this episode gives you the tools to plan and the freedom from pressure the next time you're the host.
