Tim Walls made his first solo campaign appearance yesterday, a week after he was named Vice President Kamala Harris's running mate.

In a speech to a labor union in Los Angeles,

he pushed back on Republican attacks on his military service.

Wals was a longtime member of the Army National Guard, but at least three of his former Guard colleagues have publicly expressed disappointment about his decision to leave the service when the unit was preparing to go to war in Iraq.

Walls left in 2005 to run was preparing to go to war in Iraq.

and he won a House seat the following year.

He explained his decision yesterday.

My students inspired me to run for that office and I was proud to make it to Washington

I was a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee

and a champion of our men and women in uniform. He then referenced his Republican opponent

for Vice President, Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio.

And I firmly believe you should never denigrate another person's service record.

Do anyone brave enough to put on that uniform for our great country, including my opponent, I just have a few simple words.
