Summary

Movistar decided they wanted to watch the world burn and this stage turned into absolute chaos - immediately becoming one of Lanterne's favourite stages of the year.

Welcome back to the Lantern Rouge Cycling Podcast with Benji Naisen and to our recap of the

0:05.2

first stage of the 100th edition of the Volta Ciclista Catalonia, a seventh stage world tour race.

0:11.7

I put up a big preview of it the other day during Milano San Remo when I was kind of bored.

0:18.2

First stage is from Kalea to Kalea. It's a look from the coast. They go in, land into the

0:24.7

medium mountain region and then back into a flat sprint in the coast. Pretty interesting profile,

0:32.1

very tightly balanced between break and sprinters and maybe a climbing sprint, a sort of like

0:39.7

Magnus Court, like on Matthew's types. Other of those two are here, the 180 kilometer long stage,

0:46.8

two main climbs. They crest with 104 and 131 Ks to go. The first one's not so bad.

0:54.8

Not particularly steep. The first long one, but then the concerning one, maybe if you're not in

1:01.6

good condition, was the climb from the, or called the Port de Santa Fe, the Montseni.

1:07.6

The first five or six Ks of it were actually like six percent average. So that was the place

1:13.5

to put sprinters under pressure, then a long descent of 30 Ks and then a small roller,

1:20.2

one and a half Ks of 5.6 percent and then 18 Ks, false light downhill to the finish.

1:26.6

Who do you think, who do you like for this stage, Benji beforehand, the break, the sprinters,

1:32.1

a GC man? Honestly, I didn't really have a clear view of what was going to happen. We know that

1:36.8

on this similar parkour, the ones who had won a stage a few years ago, so to bring canmen on this

1:41.6

kind of parkour, because you've got the climbs in the middle of the stage, it is sent towards a

1:46.7

smaller hill just before the line. This means that first of all, the sprinters could already drop

1:52.0

on the mountains, on those hills. I'm not sure if we can really specify as pop-up mountains,

1:58.0

but these major climbs of the day, those are the ones where the sprinters, the real flat sprinters

2:04.6

could drop. We don't have too much of those on the stylist here. I was more looking at potentially a

2:10.8

sprinter would already use Bunch, but then my question would result into who's going to keep that
