It's The Birch Show.

Well, intern Lawrence saw an interview about a movie that may have changed her life.

0:06.9

Well, I was watching Oprah and Chris Rock was on there introducing his movie Good Hair.

0:11.8

And he basically went around the country and whatever, just searching about how black women change her hair.

0:17.2

If it's wigs, if it's weaves and, you know, just everything, whatnot.

0:20.9

And just showing how they can change their hair from day to day.

0:23.8

And they were just talking about that versus Caucasian women, and they can't really change

her hair.

0:28.9

I mean, they highlight it, they do low lights and whatnot, but they have so much damage to their

hair.

0:34.0

And what?

0:35.8

Or African-American women don't because they just change their hair or they put on wigs every day. You didn't know any of that? No, because I saw all these like African-American women like this long hair and I was like, wow, they have gorgeous hair. How do they get that? They buy it in India. Yeah, like, I was just like, wow, that's amazing. And then when he was telling about it, I was like, really? So it's all fake? Like, I had no idea. I saw this movie a couple of weeks ago. I was telling these guys, the premiere was here in Atlanta, and Chris Rock was here for it. And I was there with my friend Terrence and Dolvette. And I was like you. I was sitting there the entire time with my jaw open. It's like a whole new world was open to me, like the worlds of perms. Because in a white person's world, a perm, it means your hair is curly and sort of puffy, right? And in African-American world, a perm means that it's straightened. Yeah, and they put this product on their hair, and it straightens it, and it like burns her a scalp, and I'm like, why would you do that? Like, it's crazy. It's all for beauty. Yeah. You were kind of jealous about being able to swap out the hair. Me personally, my hair is so damaged from getting it highlighted all the time, and I have to cut it all the time. I'm like, I just want my hair to grow, and it never grows. And then these African-American women have like this long hair down to like their ankles practically. I'm like, how does it grow? Intern Natalie might be able to help you out here. Well, actually, I'm kind of surprised by that because I thought white women do that as well because Jessica Simpson has an hair extension line. and even Miley Cyrus they asked was that her hair She was like, no I wish it was my hair

And Kim's Olsiac? Well, that looks obvious, though. That's an obvious wig. Talk about the ones that don't look obvious. That looks actually like, you know, real hair. I think the most fascinating part, I mean, we'll get back to the weave and the wig and stuff. I think that is an interesting part of it.

2:18.9

But for me, like, knowing that 95% of black women at one point or another have had to straighten their hair with product, I had no idea.

2:27.8

I have to do it every four weeks.

2:29.6

Really?

2:30.8

How long does it take?

2:33.6

It could take up to like two hours. And how much does it cost? You don't leave it in your hair for that long, probably like 30 minutes. But yeah, you can buy them at the store. It costs less than $10. Or you can have it professionally done. That's about $60. It depends. Because the review of the movie I read yesterday said it was like some women spend $1,000 a month. Well, that's on, I can see that. But I had a friend, Chantal, that would go to get her hair done, and she would be there all day. Like, she'd be there for like six hours. That's because they sit there and gossip and watch TV and talk crap. But if you just go in, go in and get out probably no more. Keep your head down, don't talk to me.

3:07.8

Focus on my head.

3:08.5

Exactly.

3:09.1

They just go in and gossip.

3:10.3

That's what takes six hours. If she had braids and stuff, would that take longer? Oh, yeah. That takes longer. My sister has it done every, like, two months. So that takes about four or five hours. And it hurts, right? I mean, at least in watching the movie, it made it look like the stuff that you have to put in your hair.
