Summary

(Not For Kids or Doll Lovers) Our 10th Urban Legend episode highlights the stories of some of the more famous "haunted" dolls. including Robert, Chuckie, and Annabelle, among others. The notion that an inanimate object such as a toy, a stuffed animal, a doll, or a ventriloquists dummy can incorporate a human soul or take on human characteristics has been with us for eons. There are people who collect replicas of "famous" haunted dolls, and moviemakers have done very well bringing them to life. The second half of this episode covers the career of radio and TV's famous ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his wooden alter ego Charlie MacArthy, who managed to land a nice inheritance when Bergen died, leaving Bergen's daughter Candice with nothing.

collections coming for you in the coming weeks and months starting with today's episode

1:07.6

urban legends number 10 haunted dolls and lonely dummies. It might have been our Salem stories

1:14.4

and interviews that got me thinking about this but would really launch that was an experience I

1:18.3

hit up in Pennsylvania a few years ago. Before we get into that story I need to tell you that the

1:23.6

subject of haunted dolls is definitely not for children or for persons of all ages who collect

1:29.0

dolls which do not have a supposed connection to the paranormal. The discussion of dolls which

1:35.1

have somehow taken on the souls of the dead is a spine-gilling topic which connects with paranormal

1:39.8

events and dates back to early times. Today's urban legend collection begins with a personal

1:44.9

recollection then covers the stories of haunted dolls followed by the story of ventriloquist

Edgar Bergen and his wise cracking dummy Charlie McCarthy. The following personal recollection

is true. Some years ago my wife was notified that her uncle whom we will call Uncle Lu

had died and that she had been named executor of his estate. We were tasked with traveling

up to Northeastern Pennsylvania to meet with his attorney. The funeral home director
