Journey with me back to 1938 as a young couple named Mike and Leone Goulding, having invested in a trading post in Navaho Country and fallen in love with the beautiful landscape and the Navaho people who populated what we call Monument Valley Utah/Arizona today- saved their pennies and photos and took a long road trip to Hollywood to find director John Ford and convince him that their valley would be the ideal place to film his next western movie, despite there being no lodging, no restaurants, and no electricity. Its a great story and a few quotes and movie memories are offered. I HOPE YOU ENJOY IT!

The story of Sgt. Don Dinwiddie, radioman on the B-17 GI Sheets, and his crew as they barely survived being shot down in German-held territory on Jan 29th, 1944,as told by author Terry Irwin. Today's history classes really don't teach the many ways that commen men with uncommon courage fought for our freedom in WWII- and this story is a great example. Tom Phillips and his three young children disappeared from the isolated rural Waikato town of Marokopa on 9 December 2021. New Zealand Police believe that the children were taken by their father to a location somewhere in the western Waikato, after a dispute with their mother. Phillips is alleged to have committed a bank robbery in September 2023, but the first sighting of all three children with their father was on 3 October 2024, when they were spotted walking through Marokopa farmland. However, despite a three-day search of the area, including the use of a military helicopter, they have not yet been located. Background Marokopa seen from above Before their disappearance, Tom Phillips lived in ĹŚtorohanga in New Zealand's Waikato district with his three children.[ They also spent much of their time at the family farm in Marokopa. Phillips had been separated from his wife Catherine for several years and was homeschooling the children.[citation needed] He is an experienced hunter and camper. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington (December 4, 1912 – January 11, 1988) was an American combat pilot who was a United States Marine Corps fighter ace during World War II. He received the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. A Marine aviator with the Pacific fleet in 1941, Boyington joined the "Flying Tigers" (1st American Volunteer Group) of the Republic of China Air Force and saw combat in Burma in late 1941 and 1942 during the Second Sino-Japanese War. In September 1942, Boyington rejoined the Marine Corps. In early 1943, he deployed to the South Pacific and began flying combat missions in the F4U Corsair fighter. On August 14, 1943, he took command of Marine fighter squadron VMF-214 ("Black Sheep"). In January 1944, Boyington, outnumbered by Japanese "Zero" planes, was shot down into the Pacific Ocean after downing one of the enemy planes. He was captured by a Japanese submarine crew and was held as a prisoner of war for more than a year and a half. He was released shortly after the surrender of Japan. The television series Baa Baa Black Sheep was inspired by Boyington and his men in the "Black Sheep" squadron. It ran for two seasons in the late 1970s.  Catch all 120 of our WWII stories at www.bestof1001stories.com

By 1880 the ATS&F Railroad had laid tracks from Kansas City to California- and people and products were starting to move through the still untamed west. Food along the way, however, was a spotty proposition, and the railroad was faced with a dilemma. Cooks were hard to keep employed, and waiters were hard to find. Thats when Fred Harvey, who had emigrated from England to the US at age 15 and got into the restaurant, and then the train business- saw an opportunity. He went to the offices of the Atcheson, Yopeka, & Santa Fe Railroad and offered them a plan. If the railroads would give him the dining cars and let him upgrade the stops every hundred miles or so- he (Harvey) would provide first class food services. It was a win-win. But Harvey didn't stop tghere. He placed ads in central US newspapers looking for educated, proper young ladies who were willing to head west with the railroads while working for a select group of upscale restaurants. Many young girls who saw no future in their lives outside of farm and domestic work lept at the opportunity- and the Harvey Girls were born. This is their story.  Citations and Sources: Citations and Sources: 1 Setting the Standard: The Harvey Girls. On October 25, 1944, through a series of naval movements, a small 13 ship destroyer task force found itself the only thing between a huge 23 ship Japanese battle fleet and the American landing force attempting to free the Japanese held Philippine Islands. When the choice came to run south, one destroyer commander named Ernest Evans,a Cherokee Indian who had joined to fight, charged the entire Japanese fleet alone, guns blazing and torpedoes firing, while the crew of largest battleship in the world, the Yamato, watched in stunned amazement. This incredibly brave action gave the rest of the small support force named Taffy 3 the incentive to attack, which they did, ultimately wreaking huge damage upon the surprised Japanese fleet, saving the Philippine invasion, and handing the Japanese navy a defeat from which they never recovered. Here is our interview with filmmaker/producer Steve Edmiston ("The Maury Island Incident", Youtube) regarding the Maury Island UFO incident which occurred in June 1947 in the Seattle/Tacoma area. For all of you who live within a day's drive of Seattle WA you really need to consider attending the 4th annual,MIBB- the Men in Black Birthday Bash-to honor the event which all began with the alleged sighting of three UFO's by Harold Dahl, son, and boat crew in 1947, just a few days before. Come dressed in black. Aliens welcome. This is one of the craziest UFO stories out there, and it doesn't get much attention because there was no early report or investigation and the initial facts were blurred by Dah's friend /partner who was possibly tyring to profit by magnifying an incident which may or may not have been a legitimate otherworldy visit.  Flaming metal shards, according to Dahl's account, were released by one the disc-shaped crafts that flew by his boat, striking the boat, landing on the deck, killing his son's dog, and burning his son, panicking the crew and causing the boat to be beached on Maury Island. It was later suggested that the power source for one of the craft had exploded, causing the shrapnel. Dahl and Crisman reported that "men in black" visited their homes and workplaces askling questions about the event, of which they were already aware, and telling they and the families to be quiet about what had happened. Later Dahl retracted his story. Both the Air Force and the FBI labed the story a hoax. Every year for the past three years the area celebrates the event with week long festivities and calls it 'The Men in Black Birthday Bash" and visitors can attent multiple events as well as a hike along the Southside UFO Trail. Holy flying saucers! The Men in Black Birthday Bash (aka MIBBB Fest) is landing again starting June 13, 2025, bigger, funnier and quirkier than ever in 2025. This year’s celebration of the Washington State origins of the mythic Men in Black will boast nine days of events. The festival commemorates the historic Maury Island Incident. This 1947 UFO sighting prompted the first reported encounter with a Man in Black, right here in the Pacific Northwest. Alien Abductee Look-Alike Contest is Friday, June 13 The festival kicks off on Friday, June 13, 2025 with an alien abductee look-alike contest inspired by the recurring SNL character Colleen Rafferty (Kate McKinnon). Alienvitation Scavenger Hunt Starts Friday, June 13 Friday the 13th also launches seven days of an Alienvitation Scavenger Hunt at the Westfield Southcenter Mall, where you can solve clues, collect prizes, experience new museum-quality Maury Island Incident and Men in Black interactive exhibits. You can even use a phone booth to invite the 1947 aliens back to see what’s new. The Maury Island Incident Film Screening June 20 Immerse yourself in our region’s UFO history and mythology at Saucers and Sass. This big-screen showing of the multiple award-winning The Maury Island Incident film will be followed by a drag queen-hosted sci-fi trivia contest and party. Men in Black Birthday Bash is Saturday, June 21 The festival’s signature cosplay event, the Men in Black Birthday Bash, happens Saturday, June 21. Guests come dressed in variations of black and white for an evening of music, entertainment and quirky traditions that celebrate the origin story of the iconic Men in Black. The Waterland Arcade hosts an afterparty with DJ’d, space-themed music. Bash attendees and cosplayers will receive a discounted entry. Â

JON'S TOP TEN WWII FAVORITES:  #1 OF 10 BEST "The Commando Raid on St. Nazaire: the Most Daring Raid of WWII": The St. Nazaire Raid, also known as Operation Chariot, was a British Amphibious attack on the heavily defended Normandie drydock at St. Nazaire on March 26th, 1942. The objective of the raid was to destroy the drydock in German-held St. Nazaire, thus denying an Atlantic repair port to the new and powerful German battleship Tirpitz, which by itself was capable of winning the battle for the North Atlantic and cutting off England from much needed supplies. A joint operation involving over 200 British Commandos supported by Naval forces and RAF, the raid, costly in human lives, was the most decorated single action in British WWII naval history. #WWII #Commandos #TheGreatestRaidofAll #StNazaire #Podcast #HistoryPodcast  . The ship had been packed with delayed-action explosives, well hidden within a steel and concrete case, that detonated later that day, putting the dock out of service until 1948.[4] A force of commandos landed to destroy machinery and other structures. German gunfire sank, set ablaze, or immobilized virtually all the small craft intended to transport the commandos back to England. The commandos fought their way through the town to escape overland but many surrendered when they ran out of ammunition or were surrounded by the Wehrmacht defending Saint-Nazaire. Of the 612 men who undertook the raid, 228 returned to Britain, 169 were killed and 215 became prisoners of war. German casualties included over 360 dead, some of whom were killed after the raid when Campbeltown exploded. To recognise their bravery, 89 members of the raiding party were awarded decorations, including five Victoria Crosses. After the war, St Nazaire was one of 38 battle honours awarded to the commandos. The operation has been called "the greatest raid of all" in British military circles. Â

I first heard this story on Paul Harvey years ago., and I've retold it in part but never in full. This is the story of Lieutenant Commander Edward Henry O'Hare (March 13, 1914 – November 26, 1943) who was an American naval aviator of the United States Navy, who on February 20, 1942, became the Navy's first fighter ace of the war when he single-handedly attacked a formation of nine Japanese medium bombers approaching his aircraft carrier. Even though he had a limited amount of ammunition, he was credited with shooting down five enemy bombers and became the first naval aviator recipient of the Medal of Honor in World War II. Butch's father had been the attorney for gangster Al Capone for years and at some point had agreed to go undercover for the US Treasury Service in order to expose Capone for tax evasion- the spoken legend being that Eddie (EJ), Butch;'s father, knew that by testifying to Capone's dirty dealings he would be putting a target on his own back, and agreed to give up Capone in exchange for the promise that Butch could attend the US Naval Academy. EJ testified, Capone went to prison, and in revenge, as the legend (most likely true) goes, EJ was shot and killed while driving to work. On September 19, 1949, the Chicago-area Orchard Field Airport was renamed O'Hare International Airport, sin honor of Butch o'Hare.. An F4F Wildcat, in a livery identical to the aircraft ("White F-15") flown by O'Hare, is on display in Terminal 2. The display was formally opened on the seventy-fifth anniversary of his Medal of Honor flight See picture of Butch and his wife while being awarded the Medal of Honor. at our web page at 1001 heroes here: www.bestof1001stories.com.Â

First there was field holler, then came the slow rolling responses,- the "the breeze through the trees". Echoes of hardship, music of the soul. Then came the guitar, and the strings, and the slides, and the bottleneck- until that guitar became a second voice. That second voice, with its groans, its tears, its joy of overcoming, became the Blues. -JH 2025 Recently I saw that Ma Rainey's early songs had just become public domain, along with a number of other talents who really combined to give us one of America's truest music art forms- the Blues.  I wanted to know how the blues came to be-who really "brought it", and how to tell the different between different types of blues- like Chicago, or St. Louis Blues. So I asked one ofm our investigative journalists, Gizelle Erickson, to do some digging, find some music and story we could use- and she handed me most of this story. She would have voiced it but a bad cold got her first- so I got part one. She gets part 2. Here is the story of the birth of the blues.

In part two we cover the start and rapid growth of the Bielski partisan camps in Belarus, their raids on Gernan patrols and on German sympathizers, and the hard and often times deadly choices that needed to be made to protect the forest clans. We also cover what happened to the four brothers after the war and the filming, which was done in Lithuania, which borders Belarus. We also discuss the controversy that faced the movie as well as criticisms that the movie basically whitewashed the story to cover up crimes committed by the Bielski Partisans. as well as their alliance with the Russian army. I believe all their actions are covered evenly here and the listener is left to judge their actions. For reference and study:: The Bielski Brothers, Peter Duffy. This is part one of the story of the Bielski Brothers- a tightly knit group of 4 brothers- the yoiungest 13, and the oldest 33, who formed an armed resistance group in the forests of Belarus during WWII to save Jews from certain death in the hands of the Nazis. Led by Tuvia Bielsky, the group created a working community in the forest which was capable of defending itself against Germans, formed an alliance with a local Russian partisan group from whom they were able to get their first weapons, and raided German patrols and camps for weapons, medicine, and food on a regular basis, killing hundreds of Nazis in the process. They saved 1, 246 Jews from death through their efforts, which basically went unheard of until fairly recetly when Tuvia Bielsky's journal was translated from Yiddish to English. The movie "Defiance", starring Daniel Craig, which was released in 2008 and is currently shown on Netflix, is closely based upon this story. In later parts we will cover the making of the movie. Britain was fully involved in WWII in 1940-41 prior to the US entering the war- and they were defending their island against Germany to the last man if need be. So many British pilots had been killed that they despertaely needed women to ferry war planes, both new and "shot up" to and from factories and bases all over England. It was dangerous work involving over 140 types of planes. The American women, all licensed flyers, who answered the call were gutsy, determined women who proved themselves time and again. They came first, before the WASPS, who gained fame in movies and documentaries, and when they returned to the US there were no flyiing jobs available for them. They deserve their place in history- and 'SPITFIRES' is their story. ARTICLE : Women Take Wing in Wartime https://airandspace.si.edu/stories/editorial/women-take-wing-wartime  Â

1001 Heroes takes a deep dive into one of the most tragic stories in history- The incredible true story of Russia's murder of tens of thousands of Polish surrendered officers, town leaders, intelligentsia, men, women, and children- and their attempt to cover it up and when that became impossible- to blame it on Germany.(Not that Germany wasn't committing other war crimes as well).. The Katyn massacre was a series of mass executions of nearly 22,000 Polish military and police officers, border guards, and intelligentsia prisoners of war carried out by the Soviet Union, specifically the NKVD, at Joseph Stalin's order in April and May 1940. Our new website: www.bestof1001stories.com Though the killings also occurred in the Kalinin and Kharkiv NKVD prisons and elsewhere, the massacre is named after the Katyn forest, where some of the mass graves were first discovered by Nazi German forces in 1943.[2] The massacre is qualified as a crime against humanity,[3] crime against peace,[3] war crime[3][4] and (within the Polish Penal Code) a Communist crime.[5] According to a 2009 resolution of the Polish parliament's Sejm, it bears the hallmarks of a genocide.[6][7] The order to execute captive members of the Polish officer corps was secretly issued by the Soviet Politburo led by Stalin.[8] Of the total killed, about 8,000 were officers imprisoned during the 1939 Soviet invasion of Poland, another 6,000 were police officers, and the remaining 8,000 were Polish intelligentsia the Soviets deemed to be "intelligence agents and gendarmes, spies and saboteurs, former landowners, factory owners and officials".[9] The Polish Army officer class was representative of the multi-ethnic Polish state; the murdered included ethnic Poles, Ukrainians, Belarusians, and 700–900 Polish Jews.[10] The government of Nazi Germany announced the discovery of mass graves in the Katyn Forest in April 1943.[11] Stalin severed diplomatic relations with the London-based Polish government-in-exile when it asked for an investigation by the International Committee of the Red Cross.[12] After the Vistula–Oder offensive where the mass graves fell into Soviet control, the Soviet Union claimed the Nazis had killed the victims, and it continued to deny responsibility for the massacres until 1990, when it officially acknowledged and condemned the killings by the NKVD, as well as the subsequent cover-up by the Soviet government. An investigation conducted by the office of the prosecutors general of the Soviet Union (1990–1991) and the Russian Federation (1991–2004) confirmed Soviet responsibility for the massacres, but refused to classify this action as a war crime or as an act of mass murder. The investigation was closed on the grounds that the perpetrators were dead, and since the Russian government would not classify the dead as victims of the Great Purge, formal posthumous rehabilitation was deemed inapplicable. In November 2010, hoping to improve relations with Poland, the Russian State Duma approved a declaration condemning Stalin and other Soviet officials for ordering the massacre. In 2021, the Russian Ministry of Culture downgraded the memorial complex at Katyn on its Register of Sites of Cultural Heritage from a place of federal to one of only regional importance.[13]  Learn more about your ad choices. This long-lost American tale tells the true story of two young girls, Abigail and Rebecca Bates, the daughters of a lighthouse keeper in Scituate, Massachusetts, who turn back a British warship during the War of 1812. Early in September, 1814, a British warship was sighted offshore preparing to launch barges toward the lighthouse, barges containing troops bent upon ransacking the town. Simeon Bates, the lighthouse keeper, was away, leaving his wife, two very young boys, and his two daughters, Abigail and Rebecca. They spotted the ship, and knowing their was not enough time to warn the town, got out a fife and drum that they had learned how to play that summer, and, hidden from sight of the ship, started playing "Yankee Doodle", loudly enough that the sound carried across the water to the ship and the barges. The ship had waited until high tide so it could slip over the sand bar and into the harbor, but upon hearing "Yankee Doodle" made the assumption that there were colonial troops present, troops that might have a cannon, and the ship was not within easy range of cannon fire. it was too great a risk to take-and the troops returned to the ship. The origin of the song "Yankee Doodle" is told here. Special thanks to Tim Abbott for his blog www.greensleeves.typepad.com, where we found this story and others. 1001 HEROES CONFIDENTIAL APRIL 20, 2025: THE SEARCH FOR AMY LYNN BRADLEY Amy Lynn Bradley (born May 12, 1974) is an American woman who went missing during a Caribbean cruise on the Royal Caribbean International cruise ship Rhapsody of the Seas in late March 1998 while en route to Curaçao. Her whereabouts remain unknown to this day. She was a 23-year-old Longwood University graduate at the time of her disappearance. After midnight on Monday March 23, 1998, Amy and her younger brother Brad headed to the ship's nightclub to go dancing. Records show that Brad decided to return to his cabin earlier than Amy. The ship's door lock records show that Brad had entered his cabin at around 3:35 am, and Amy soon followed five minutes later. The two chatted before heading to bed. Amy's father Ron awoke around 6:00 a.m. to check on his daughter only to find her missing from the balcony she had slept on earlier. When authorities were alerted that Amy was missing, the Netherlands Antilles Coast Guard conducted a four-day search in the surrounding waters and along the cruise lines to no result. Authorities began to speculate that she may have fallen overboard and drowned. There have been possible sightings of Bradley in Curaçao. In August 1998, tourists saw a woman resembling Bradley on a beach and in 1999 a member of the U.S. Navy claimed a woman in a brothel said she was Bradley and asked him for help. In the years following Amy's disappearance, some new evidence would arise leading to theories including Amy being sold into a human trafficking industry or potential remains. As well as this program, the case has been presented on Dr. Phil in a segment entitled The Search for Natalee: Amy Bradley, and also on America's Most Wanted. TV history was made in 1951 when the first episode of I Love Lucy aired on CBS starring a fiery red head Irish actress named Lucille Ball and her real life husband, Cuban American band leader Desi Arnaz as New York City apartment dwellers Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. The show would air 6 years, making #1 in ratings 4 of those years, and breaking single episode viewer ratings twice- once when Lucy announced she was pregnant, and again when she went to the hospital to have their baby. Today we remember the show, the cast, the techniques and inventions that DesiLu Productions gave to the television industry., and most of all the millions of laughs the Lucille Ball and company gave and still give to viewers. Full Transcript at https://www.bestof1001stories.com/show/1001-heroes-legends-histories-mysteries-podcast/ In light of the recent release of thousands of previously classified documents concerning the Kennedy Assassination we present an in-depth look at the aftermath, which left investigators wirth the murder of the assassin Lee Harvey Oswald by strip club owner Jack Ruby, who was said to be heavily in debt to the New Orleans mafia, and the suspected murder by poison of journalist and popular tv game show contestant Dorothy Kilgallen, who was only reporter to interview Ruby twice, and who said she was close to busting the investigation of the Kennedy conspiracy wide -open. Many, many details as shared by "The Reporter Who Knew Too Much" author Mark Shaw and others lead to the sensible conclusion that Dorothy was murdered for what the mafia suspected she knew. Our guest writer, researcher, and voice talent is Gizelle Erickson. Reviews appreciated! FYI  How many reporters who spoke with Jack Ruby ended up dead? Reports vary on the exact number of journalists who interviewed Jack Ruby and later died, and the circumstances of their deaths are sometimes disputed. However, some prominent cases often cited include: Jim Koethe: A journalist for the Dallas Times Herald who interviewed Ruby and was planning to write a book about the case. He died on April 23, 1964, allegedly from a karate chop to the neck.  Bill Hunter: Another journalist who interviewed Ruby. He reportedly died the same day as Jim Koethe, April 23, 1964, from the accidental discharge of a weapon in a police station.  Dorothy Kilgallen: A crime reporter for the New York Journal. She secured a private interview with Jack Ruby during his trial. Kilgallen died in November 1965, with the official cause of death ruled as an accidental overdose of alcohol and barbiturates . It is important to note that these deaths have fueled numerous conspiracy theories, with some claiming they were murdered due to their knowledge or investigation of the JFK assassination and Jack Ruby's role in it. However, official investigations have attributed their deaths to other causes, and the veracity of claims related to their alleged murders remains controversial.

When Mary Magdalane, Mary Salome, and Mary Cleopas landed on the shores of pagan France with their group of faithfuls- they had a mighty task to accomplish. Taking refuge under a Roman Temple- they began to preach the word of Jesus- simple and pure, 350 years before Catholicism. Legend says that she brought with her The Holy Grail, and that after her death it was kept safe from invading Saracens and the armies of the Pope's Inquisition. Even the German Nazis joined in the search, convinced thata group of early believers called Cathars had buried it in the catecombs beneath their mountain fortress at Mont Segur. Join us as we sort through a milennium of legends from Southern France to find traces of Mary Magdalene's legacy and the Holy Grail. Finally! The incredible two part story beginning with the journey of "The Three Marys"- Mary Magdalene, Mary Cleopas, and Mary Salome- and their group of believers in a rudderless boat with no sails as they are cast adrift in the Mediterranean Sea after being exiled from Judea by enemies of Christ after his crucifixion. They survive to land on the coast of France and begin to spread the word of Christ in its most basic form. Part Two,  traces the legends that have sprung up all over Southern France- legends that Mary brought with her The Holy Grail, stories of the Cathars- a large group of followers that made their home and fortress in the foothills of the Pyrenees, rejected Catholicism, and were nearly wiped out by Catholic forces bent upon their destruction, the story of Otto Rahm, the Nazi archeologist who combed the Cathar ruins for the Holy Grail, and the stories of the other exiled passengers on that boat, including Lazarus, Mary Salome, Mary Cleopas, Sidonius, Joseph of Aramathia, and Maximinus- all who would preach the gospel of Jesus to the pagan worshippers that lived under the shadow of Roman occupation. In 1929 an Australian named Harold Bell Lassiter announced that he had found a fabulously rich gold deposit in the Northwest Territory years ago and that he needed the cash to raise an expedition to go after it. At first, he had no takers, but as the depression took hold and his story spread the money appeared and a group of experts gathered for a 1931 expedition. It wasn't long before Lasseter's story began to crumble, he had no samples and no map and very vague recollections- and the party ended up abandoning him as well as the project. He kept on, and some sources say he found the gold "reef" before his untimely death. There are still many people searching for that deposit, said to be above ground in quartz rock strata 7 feet wide and 10 feet thick. Was he a charlatan- a cheat? a liar? Or was there some truth to his story? Time will tell. The incredible true story (the 1996 movie is largely fiction) of a British railroad project in Kenya in 1898 that was being harassed by man-eating lions which would attack coolies in the night, dragging them out of their tents screaming for help. Coolies, African workers, teamsters, and British authorities were mauled over a peroid of 9 months, with an estimated death toll of 150. A man named Lt. Col John Henry Patterson tracked the lions for months, finally bringing them down in December of 1898. He wrote a book called 'The Maneaters of Tsavo' from which we quote passages often as his account is first-hand and gripping. It also reveals the history of Kenya at the turn of the century with British, Portuguese, and Arab influence. His book, while in the public domain (1907) is also featured at Amazon, and we highly recommend it. "Was My Brother In The Battle?"- What Civil War meant to my family-Six hundred thousand men died or were wounded in the American Civil War. Just as many families were affected. Mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers all felt the hopelessness of not knowing if their sons and brothers would ever come home. Steven Foster captured this feeling of helplessness and rage in his song "Was My Brother In The Battle?, which is sung here, credits below, and thanks to Cinzi Lavin and Jennifer Love, arrangement and vocals respectively, for their rendition. Did the Civil War really matter? Sadly, many people today don't know who fought in the war, when it took place, or who won it. Many more don't know why they fought. It's popular now to look back and say what a waste it was and that it should never have been fought, but history can't be written off so simply like that. Those who write it off have to look at it in context- meaning you have to put yourself in that time and place, understand what tensions were building, and why. Only then do you realize that it was unavoidable. Both sides could not have found the answer any other way, and the memories of the men on both sides, North and South, who were caught up in the war need to be preserved, not torn down. This is the story of my great-great Uncle, who fought for the Union during the American Civil War, and who gave his life to preserve one nation, undivided, at the Battle of Petersburg in 1864. He joined the New York 5th Infantry, a Zouave Regiment, and was involved in a number of engagements, including Cold Harbor, Charleston, Fort Sumter, and Petersburg. Their sacrifice gave us an end to slavery, a united America, a path to voting and equal rights, veterans hospitals, and the opening of the west, to name just a few. It also gave us the most powerful nation on earth. Here you'll find the story of William Carney, the first black man to earn the Congressional Medal of Honor, which he did while fighting for the Massachusetts Volunteer 54th Infantry, who was wounded under heavy fire as he delivered the union flag to his comrades on the front line, saying “Boys, don’t worry, it never touched the ground”. It is a true story. He survived the war. He risked death for the flag and what it stood for. So did Horace Hagadorn., who paid the ultimate price. He died fighting at Petersburg. His two letters to his sister Rebecca are included here. A huge thanks to Cinzi Lavin for allowing us to use her music. "Was My Brother in the Battle?"  They say behind every good man there is a strong woman- and if ever men needed strong moral support it was during the harsh winter of Valley Forge (1777-78), where the wives of George Washington, Henry Knox, Nathaniel Greene- and members of the "camp followers"- wives and children of the soldiers- tended to the sick, washed laundry, cooked what food there was, and helped to keep the flame of liberty which had brought them there alive. This is their story... Nikola Tesla was an American electrical engineer and inventor who made significant bounds in the areas of electrical applications, motors, remote controlled boats, dynamos, and the invention of alternating current motors which could power cars. To honor Tesla's contribution, Elon Musk, the head of the electric car company Tesla, named his company after the great inventor. One of the least known of Tesla's many projects was the particle accelerator, which some people have named the "Death Ray". In this story we discuss Tesla as well as the story of the legendary Ark of the Covenant, which the Jews used to terrify their enemies. It was a wooden box lined with gold which, according to biblical accounts, emitted a deadly energy source that would kill anyone who touched it. At the end of our story Tesla gives his opinion as to how the Ark got its power. Catch ALL our author interviews in one place here at 1001 History's Best Storytellers! On May 31st 1889 the earthen dam holding back Lake Conemaugh 15 bmiles upstream from Johnstown, PA burst duriung heavy spring rains, sending a 40 foot wave of death down a narrow river valley in which was located 80,000 persons, and finally reaching Johnstown with houses, alive and dead persons, trees, and scrap of all types, which caught on fire when it all hit the bridge at Johnstown, literally roasting many survivors alive in the conflagration. We feature survivor and author accounts in part one, and in part 2 we deal with the aftermath and investigations. This is a unique history lesson in that there had been warnings, and there had been prior floods- and no action was taken to shore up the dam which caused all the deaths. TSUNAMIÂ WAVES OF DEATH: Deep below the surface of the Indian Ocean, near the island of Sumatra, two portions of the Earth's crust which had been pushing against each other for the past milennia, one plate, actually the India Plate, gave way along a 1,000 mile faultline, creating a huge fissure in the sea floor as it subducted beneath the pressing Burma Plate, suddenly displacing trillions of tons of water, and causing powerful shock waves in every direction, waves that would introduce untold death and destruction to 14 countries within the coming minutes and hours, causing between 230,000 and 280,000 deaths and unimaginable destruction of property. It was December 26th, 2004. Less than 7 years later, a 8.9 earthquake in Japan set another group of Tsunami waves in motion which caused the loss of 5,000 lives and billions of dollars in losses, despite Japan's awareness of the threat.
