And it is June 5th, 2024, 80 years ago, June 5th, 1944, the decision had been made at 4.30 in the morning by Eisenhower

and the command structure of Overlord. The word was go. Many troops had been at sea for two

days at that point because the weather had been so overwhelmingly bad they'd held back the original date was meant to be the fifth.

But the decision to go is now and the first to go out will be the paratroopers leaving

sometime before midnight, the last plane takes off just after midnight. And my

concern is what these cadets at West Point learn about these moments you taught at West Point. So what is your

presentation to the young future officers of the United States Army? Good evening

to you Jeff. Good you John. Yeah I had the great fortune not only to teach at West Point, but I actually also taught the Naval Academy and talking to any of those young folks or young officers, I would usually talk about four things. First would be training in the fact that the massive amount of training that had

undergone in preparation at all levels from the highest level of division and

cores down to ships and aircraft and individual soldiers and squads and plaits is critical. and in the absolute opposite direction and the favorite story for me is the story of a

young lieutenant Wally Strobel who is in the 101st Airborne division. You may

recall John his photograph standing with Eisenhower and a bunch of 101 soldiers on the 5th of June,

awaiting getting on the aircraft to fly to France.

And when I met, Wall, who sadly is now deceased, he told me that occurred because a guy had

run into the Quansit Hut where they were all preparing and said,
