This is CBS, I'm the world. I'm John Bachelors, reporting of the Peace Conversations in Jeddah, the Saudi Arabian Kingdom over these last days.

Ukraine hails Jeddah talks as a blow to Russia. China says it's staying impartial.

A senior Ukrainian official goes the copy.

Said talks about the Ukraine war held in Saudi Arabia, dealt a, quote, huge blow to Russia,

while key Kremlin ally China declared it remained impartial in the conflict following its participation in the discussions.

40 countries were represented, the US and the European countries were present, not Russia.

Am I making too much of that? China was there.

You're not making too much of it. I think for China, you know, the main issue for China remains the unpredictability of the long term nature of this war, this conflict.

I mean, I think as China looks out, the world is destabilized by the war and that's bad from Beijing's perspective.

As much as they might like the distracting effect it has towards the West focus on China.

But, you know, Russia, the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, Sergey Lavrov and the Chinese Foreign Minister, spoke very quickly soon after the conference gathering in Jeddah.

And the Chinese Foreign Minister released talk back, I think, about the need for China to uphold an independent and impartial stance.

And though Ukraine may have seen this as a defeat for Russia, I think most of the countries, and we talked about this, it's the Bix, it's Brazil and the China Russia wasn't there.

The Greek gathering is coming up in two weeks.

But many of the countries represented are not, they're more neutral, though they oppose the war in ways, not all of them.
