This is CBS In The World. I'm John Bessworth my friend and colleague Gregory Coppley, Defense and Foreign Affairs.

Turkey in Africa, that's right, Turkey, the dominant power in Asia Minor is looking for advantages

in Turkey.

I go to one particular meeting, this is February 2024, just a month and a so ago the Turkish president Mr.

Erdogan a very strong president strong-minded and his delegation arrived in Cairo

for talks between the states.

Gregory, this is significant because Mr. C.C.

is troubled by an economy that is not responded,

by the water flow in the Nile that is not adequate to his population and right

now he's hard-pressed by the Gaza border the Rafa village that's on his half of Sinai.

So what is it that Mr. Erdogan was bringing to Mr. Sisi and Cairo?

Well, I think he brought a big stick is what he brought and that big stick was how are you going to deal with all of the refugees that I'm going to push across from Gaza into Egypt apart from removing some of them into Turkey itself and into

northern Cyprus. The Egyptian government as you pointed out is really under pressure a lot of it to do with the the inadequate water supply but also inadequate investment

You saw the impact on the income of the Turkish state, the hard currency income from the

suers canal because of the Yemeni activities against shipping in the lower Red Sea.

That is a vital element hurting Turkey, hurting Egypt right now.

And Turkey to a degree is promising Egypt some relief from all of this but

the fact is that

Egypt's main ally, Israel, is now essentially fighting its own war and this looks like it might be

out of control as far as Egypt's concerned, forcing the refugees into Egypt and the like.

And basically what you've got is Turkey attempting to, again, fish in troubled waters to get what advantage it can. So they're basically, men of their fences because
