Summary

As soon as your head hits the pillow do you fall right to sleep, or do all of your thoughts come out to play? Thoughts don’t suddenly appear from out of nowhere. In the space and quiet of rest our thoughts can rise to the surface. Morning meditation and daily mindfulness help us manage those thoughts. Hi, it's Andy here, and welcome to Radio Headspace and to Tuesday morning.

0:19.6

So at the weekend, I was with a few friends, we had a dinner together, we created one of

0:24.4

these little bubbles where our families can spend some time together, and we were discussing

0:29.1

sleeping patterns, sleeping habits. I don't know how you sleep, I don't know whether you're

0:33.7

someone who perhaps struggles to go to sleep at night, perhaps wakes up during the night,

0:38.5

maybe you wake up early and can't go back to sleep. I feel like everybody has their own

0:43.0

sleep story, if you like. It's always interesting in couples as you discuss these things with other

0:48.4

couples, because all these things come out, partners snoring and keeping them away, can all these

0:53.8

different kinds of things. Anyway, my wife was sat there and she said, the thing that really

0:59.2

drives me crazy is that Andy just lies in bed and just seems to go to sleep, but before I even

1:04.8

have a chance to chat or anything, she just falls asleep. She said, and I always find that that's

1:09.8

the time for me when I become aware of all of my thoughts, and it was something that was repeated

1:16.0

as we went around the table, as she, this happened in a number of different couples, where one person

1:21.2

seems to just hit the pillow and fall asleep, and I'm not suggesting that's a good thing, by the way,

1:24.9

that's probably an indication that running a little bit tired, but in the other person, as soon as

1:30.4

their head hit the pillow, their mind was just full of thoughts. And I think it's really tempting

1:35.9

in those situations, when you find yourself lying in bed at night wanting to go to sleep,

1:42.8

but the mind just seemingly overrun with thoughts, the feeling is that it's just happened,

1:49.6

that in lying there, suddenly those thoughts have appeared, but through the lens of mindfulness,

1:55.2

we see that actually that's not really how it is, those thoughts have been there all day long.

2:01.5

It's not that they've suddenly appeared, it's that in the space and in the quiet, those thoughts

2:07.6

have become more apparent. And so it's really interesting, when you look at the research that's
