So the other day, it was one of those afternoons.

You know the kind.

I was back to back with meetings trying to stay on top of messages, slack pings, 47 tabs open.

My brain was done.

No spark, no clarity, just system overload.

So I did what a lot of us do when we hit that wall.

I reached for my phone.

Just a quick scroll, just two minutes, I told myself,

something light to reset, a little palate cleanser.

An hour and 27 minutes later, I was now sitting on the couch, phone hovering over my face,

eyes glazed, watching a cat playing with the toy to the sound of a remix Taylor Swift track.

And I felt terrible, not just guilty, but unmotivated, like I had just overdosed on nothing.

And that moment made me think of a conversation I recently had with Dr. Anna Lemke.

She's a psychiatrist, addiction specialist, and author of the incredible book, Dopamine Nation.

And something she said really stuck with me.

She explained that we're living in a time where dopamine isn't being released in small, earned doses, like our brain evolved for.

Instead, we're hit with a constant fire hose of dopamine, through food, social

media, scrolling, shopping, even just clicking. And what happens after a flood of dopamine? We crash.

Our brains go into what she calls a dopamine deficit state.
