Summary

The Marathon des Sables is known as the toughest footrace on earth. 6 days running over 250 kilometres, carrying all of your supplies on your back. It's not for the faint hearted, and this week, we're talking to a man who crossed the finish line just a month ago. It's former Made in Chelsea star, podcaster, entrepreneur, founder of CleanCo, Spencer Matthews. Spencer and Jenni talk about what it was really like running in the hottest recorded Marathon des Sables, the places you go to mentally when undertaking such a challenge, blisters, the endless sand dunes, staying in a bivouac, the celebratory tattoo idea that never came to fruition and his next challenge idea. This may not get you wanting to sign up, but it will definitely motivate you to get out there challenging yourself. Enjoy.

Hello there, I'm Jenny Falconer back with you, welcoming you to RunPod, where we chat all things running.

0:15.6

And every week I have a guest who has their own running story to share.

0:19.3

And I'm really excited about chatting to today's

0:22.4

guest. I mean, we got to know him. A while back on Maiden Chelsea, he is a podcaster, presenter.

0:28.3

He's owner of Clean Co, brand offering an alternative to alcoholic spirits. And amongst other things,

0:35.7

he is a runner. Welcome, Spencer Matthews. Hello. Jenny, that was, that was wonderful.

0:42.2

You do quite a lot though, don't you? I was like, oh God, what do I put in this? Because there's quite a few things that I could have mentioned. But as long as we got running in, that was important.

0:49.6

Exactly. Well, that's why we're here, A. But now I thought I thought that was a marvelous introduction. Thanks very much. Thank you very much. Thank you. I didn't realize, you know, how much of a runner you were. And then when I heard that you'd signed up to do Marathon de Saab, I was like, oh, he's like, he's not just a runner. He's like a hardcore runner as well. Well, not like, yeah, it's a funny one, isn't it? No, I don't, I still wouldn't say that I, like, I've got to a stage now where I love running, I suppose, but I haven't always loved running.

1:18.6

You know, I've seen running as a kind of interesting and nice way of keeping fit and being able to kind of, you know, just get some fresh air and empty your

1:27.8

minds and stuff. But, you know, I've never been, I'm not a naturally gifted runner, if that's,

1:33.8

you know, what you were implying. I'm not sure you were. I'm not, I'm not sure that I am.

1:38.5

You know, I still, you know, I went running yesterday and did three laps of the park and found

1:42.8

it very boring, you know, it's not

1:45.3

something that exhilarates me per se. I think it's the type of thing where you have to get to

1:50.4

a certain level almost to be able to even start to appreciate it because otherwise it's,

1:57.1

you know, long, boring and, and, you know, not great, really. Yeah. I mean, I suppose it depends

2:03.6

where you go as well and what you do, because if you're just three laps of the park, you know,

2:07.8

it's like some people who go to part run and it's just two laps, they find that quite,

2:11.7

that's not as exciting as maybe running along a promenade in Santa Monica or something like, you know?

2:19.2

Indeed.

2:20.3

No, no, that's completely true.
