Bill Rajo, the Foundation for the Defense of Democracy, is a Senior Fellow.

He keeps the Long War Journal and contributing significantly to the Long War Journal as a perspective from East and West Africa brought by Caleb Weiss of the

Bridgeway Foundation and also FTD and we're very pleased to welcome Caleb.

He's a very busy man in East Africa and West Africa, but at this point it's important to update

where Somalia is. You will recall, this is from the George H.W. administration, when we first learned of the collapse of the

Somalian government around Mogadishu. It's famously Hollywood version as

Black Hawk Down. It is decades later, however, and key to understanding today is a podcast that Bill and

Caleb and their colleagues made recently with Edmund Fitton Brown of the UN. This is a very important

report coming from the analytical support and sanctions monitoring team of the

UN, the 34th report concerning Daesh, that's the local way of saying ISIS or ISIL,

and al-Qaeda and associated individuals.

And towards the close of the podcast

Edmund Fitt and Brown used a term that was compelling to me because they hadn't

considered what it meant.
