Summary

As climbing grows and enters into mainstream consciousness, we’d be naive to think that money won’t play a role. What does it take to “go pro” in climbing? How does the business of climbing evolve so that it doesn't fall into the same pitfalls that plague other sports? We dive into these questions with Rick Burton, a professor at Syracuse University Professor and Jonathan Retseck, founder of RXR Sports.

Alex, so I've got a funny question for you.

0:10.9

You're a professional athlete that doesn't play on a team or compete in tournaments.

0:16.5

Like, how does one actually go about being a professional climber?

0:22.6

So in general, I think the path to becoming a professional climber basically starts with

0:28.6

low-level sponsorship from various brands, at least this is the path that I took, where a few

0:33.9

different climbing-specific companies will offer you free product and maybe a little

0:37.9

bit of money to wear their gear or use their hardware or whatever from there if you're good

0:45.0

if you're a good athlete you know if you represent the brand well whatever then they'll bring you on

0:50.3

for like a salary or a stipend or something and you'll start actually making a living from

0:54.3

those companies. Typically, most professional climbers are sponsored in every product category.

1:00.3

So say apparel, which, you know, your clothing sponsor is normally the most money you can make

1:05.0

because apparel makes the most money of any of the companies. You know, if you think about

1:09.1

a clothing company makes a lot more money than a climbing hardware company. But you typically get sponsored in each category. So say,

1:16.5

apparel, footwear, hardware, maybe ropes and things like that, maybe some, you know,

1:22.0

sort of side specialty categories. Like, I mean, nowadays, there are tons of people making money

1:26.4

off like CBD companies and

1:27.9

things like that, which I think is not that cool. But if you're really lucky, you might get

1:32.5

sponsored by a bank company or something like that. Then beyond that, you're always trying to make

1:38.3

money on the side by, say, writing articles, participating in film projects, doing the occasional professional speaking event,

1:48.0

things like that. And I think at the beginning as a professional climber, you're mostly appearing

1:52.6

at very climbing specific events, like showing up at a real rock showing for your sponsors,

2:00.0

or speaking for a climbing club at a university, things
