I'm John Betts with my colleague Judy Dempsey of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

AFD is the sensational rise of a populist party centered in eastern Germany at one point, but now national,

doing better and better at each state election, and there's one upcoming, or more than one upcoming in the old East Germany, what was the Ost-O-S-T Germany, Ost-Eutschland. A recent rally,

which Judy tells me was in Magdeburg, which is in one part of Saxony, a very beautiful place from the postcards that I've

seen. And I think I touched about it once when I traveled to Germany. I'm not sure. I was a young

person not paying attention to the map. But in any event, all Germany can be beautiful in the

springtime. The rally was just breaking up. and they were singing the national anthem, and it was inspiring,

and there were a lot of young people on the stage.

And then, apparently spontaneously, but it might happen often, the crowd, a number of young people in the crowd, started chanting.

Ost, Ost, Ost, Deutschland.

Ost, Ost, Ost, Ostutschland.

Very loudly, very aggressively, so much so that it,

well, clearly reminded of other scenes, of other rallies and other cities once

about a time in Germany.

And it worried me, Judy.
