I'm John Bachelor. I welcome Jeff Bliss, my colleague of many years. He is Pacific Watch, and we go immediately

0:22.7

to our favorite city out west right now, maybe permanently. The ever bright and shiny and

0:29.4

transforming Las Vegas, and Jeff sent me a photograph that was inspirational. I believe I'm looking at a lot of

0:36.6

the casinos and hotels. But down here is a

0:40.3

building that reminds me of the 1950s, although it's larger than it would have been in the 50s.

0:45.9

It's said to be a two or three-story building devoted to the cult of In-N-N-Out. In-N-Out is a hamburger and French-fry place, but it becomes, in its legend,

1:00.0

something like the Taj Mahal of eateries. Jeff, what am I looking at? What is In-N-Out? Why is it so

1:06.4

successful? Good evening to you. Good evening, John. Let's just go right down the list. What you're

1:10.7

looking at is the construction of the new In-N-Out store on the Las Vegas strip. It's going to be down

1:16.3

at the end more towards the new baseball park, which is also being built. So it'll be a nice

1:21.3

one-two-punch go to the game, walk over there. But it's a uniquely California, Southern California experience. It was a true mom and pop

1:30.2

operation founded back in the 50s. I expanded from its original one store to many across the

1:36.3

western U.S. and slowly creeping eastward. I think it's gone as far east as Tennessee. I don't

1:41.6

know if it's gone any farther. But this is still a family-owned

1:45.4

business. They pay very high attention to quality. As a matter of fact, that's one of the

1:52.0

reasons it hasn't expanded yet because they don't use frozen items, especially meat in their products.

1:57.8

They're always one day from the butcher, basically, to the table.

2:02.3

And the service there is always top-notch. They've always paid their workers very well,

2:07.7

and they've created a culture that's very family-oriented. It's got a very Judeo-Christian

2:14.2

philosophy that runs throughout. If you tip the cups over on the side, you can see they've got a gospel message on them. And they've always said, we're proud of that. But freshness, you know, the quality, the friendly service has always been the hallmark. And also, they have a very, very small menu. I mean, it's hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries, and drinks for the most part. You can get them done different ways, and people always know these little secret ways to get them done differently. But it's every, every in-and-out experience is a great one. And I can say that having gone to many of them across the West, they're very tasty. They're uh, they're very welcoming when you go in there.

2:51.7

So people love it. It's, it's definitely the SoCal at its best. You remind me of something I hadn't

2:58.2

thought of for many years. The Belushi skit on the old Saturday Night Live of cheeseburger,
