Summary

PREVIEWJohn Hardie — The Evolution of Drone Warfare in the Ukraine Conflict. Hardie analyzes the expanding, evolving role of unmanned systems in the Ukraine war. Early intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) drones, including the Turkish TB2, became progressively less effective as Russia improved integrated air defense capabilities. Subsequently, FPV (first-person view) combat drones became operationally critical, supplementing larger bomber-category unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)—often adapted agricultural equipment—deployed by both combatants, particularly Ukraine, to deliver precision munitions against distributed targets.

John begins the answer, mentioning, of course, that this requires much more attention in future.

0:20.9

I will heed his remarks and get to it soon enough.

Dron War.

it's obvious that drones have played a big role.

I think sometimes their importance can be kind of... even casually, it's obvious that drones have played a big role.

1:02.4

I think sometimes their importance can be kind of overstated or misstated, maybe a better way to put it.

1:04.6

But certainly, they've been very important. If you look back at the very beginning of the full-scale war, I think kind of ISR drones,

1:10.3

the TB2, the Turkish remotely piloted aircraft, Ukraine.

1:15.6

It was kind of effective for Ukraine during the war's first few days or weeks.

1:20.6

Those became less effective as Ukrainians, excuse me, as the Russians kind of got their act together with air defense.

1:29.0

Later on in the war, FPV drones became much more important, especially in 2023 onward.

1:37.1

That kind of supplemented the kind of bomber drones, often kind of heavy agricultural type UAS,

1:45.5

that especially the Ukrainians, much less so the Russians,

1:48.1

have used to drop munitions.

1:50.2

Both sides also use kind of smaller quad coppers.
