Summary

Episode 5: We hand the mic to our Tour de France diarists again to get inside the race bubble.

In this episode we hear from Connor Swift of Arkéa-Samsic who is riding his first Tour de France – in fact, his first Grand Tour – and has the job of looking after their leader Nairo Quintana. Swift gives us his first impressions of the race and talks about how he's settling into the rhythm.

The coronavirus crisis has affected the Tour in many ways, some obvious, some less so. Riders are used to sharing rooms but on this Tour many are in separate rooms. There are fewer media demands – at least face-to-face ones with journalists, and a greater sense of being cut off from the rest of the world. So how are they passing the time away from the race? Jens Keukeleire of EF Pro Cycling talks about the books he's reading while away from home.

We also hear from Ryan Gibbons of NTT Pro Cycling and Nikias Arndt of Sunweb, who have had a particularly good opening week. And there are updates from Pavel Sivakov, who crashed twice on the opening day and has been battling to regain his strength so he can contribute fully for Ineos Grenadiers later in the race.

0:39.6	So that's mainly what I do just before I go to bed.

0:46.6	collections of books with you on the third of France?
0:48.4	I normally bring a couple of books, maybe two or three books with me on the tour and
0:52.0	they always remain in my bag completely unopened because they're just never any times.
0:56.4	So this year I've only brought one book with me and it's a book you bought for me when
1:01.3	we were on our theatre tour around the UK last November. You went into a little bookshop
1:07.2	in Bristol as we were waiting for the train and emerged with a book for each of us as
1:11.6	a little gift I can believe. It was such a lovely gesture and it was earnest Hemingways
1:17.2	a movable feast. Each book you bought I think had a sort of thing.
1:21.8	I'm relevant. That was a mistake I actually thought it was about a feast, about dining
1:26.8	but I didn't realise it. It's about his days in Paris and I think for cycling in that
1:32.4	book actually, about the six days and so on. I might get started on it during this tour.
1:37.8	It's a slim old book line all the way. Well I'm a slow reader Richard. I'm actually
1:42.5	not a slow reader. I'm quite worried with Yens because Claire gets some tips from him.
