Summary

The Tour de France’s second summit finish of the opening week didn’t shake up the overall standings but it did see a barnstorming breakaway and a very fast pace from Kilometre 0.

Join Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and François Thomazeau outside a busy restaurant in Meyrueis in the Cévennes to recap a stage win by Alexey Lutsenko – the first for a Kazakh for a decade.

One of our audio diarists, Simon Geschke, a teammate of Greg Van Avermaet’s on the CCC Team, sends in a despatch to explain how the stellar eight-man break formed. We ask whether Ineos Grenadiers are back to their best or whether Jumbo-Visma decided to throttle back a bit after consecutive stage wins and we talk about Adam Yates’s first day in the yellow jersey.
