Summary

In this episode of The Cycling Podcast from the Tour de France, we recap a seventh stage that had everything.

There was an aggressive pace set by Bora-Hansgrohe to drop all the sprinters at the start of the stage, then crosswinds caused havoc at the end of the stage. There was even time for a breakaway by Thomas De Gendt.

Join Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and François Thomazeau in Lavaur for all the reaction to the stage, and news of Lionel’s bike ride to the start in Millau which, as Richard points out, was sponsored by gravity.

The stage was won by Wout Van Aert – it was his second victory of this Tour, following hot on the heels of wins at Strade Bianche, Milan-Sanremo, a stage at the Dauphiné and the Belgian time trial championships.

We hear from Stefan Küng of Groupama-FDJ and our audio diarist Tom Southam, sports director of EF Pro Cycling, about how they turned the tables. Last year they were the losers in the crosswinds on the stage to Albi but this year they stayed safe.

There were losers, though, and we assess the changes to the overall classification. We also hear from our other diarists, Ryan Gibbons, Lukas Pöstlberger and Michael Mørkøv.
