editorial director and publisher of the nation magazine, a columnist also at the Washington Post.

The headline from London late in the day, Mr. Trump,

Zelensky won't last long if he doesn't end the Ukraine war. Katrina, a very good evening to you,

since the events of last Friday, there have been directions taken I had not anticipated. One of them is

that NATO at this point, the EU at this point, members in and out of the

EU and NATO at this point, are in disagreement about almost everything, including Ukraine,

energy, costs, commitment. What do you measure is happening in Europe that we can speak to? Is it our business? Certainly, Mr.

Trump and Mr. Vance suggested that it's Europe's business. Is that a rational conclusion for the

confusion we now witness? Good evening to you. Good evening, John. You're right. There are many

elements of confusion, many different thoughts about what needs to be done at this stage.

But I do think Europe has tried to be an independent factor and has wanted to be. It's not clear it can be.

And coming after some of the, certainly the German election, which was difficult,

though it will burr the coalition of the conservative, the CDU and others.

But Europe may not have the resources.

I mean, they have serious problems in their own country, not that we don't, but it just seems

that it's a very, very weak stance to depend on

Europe. And, you know, Trump and Vance see Putin is ruthless, but rational. We'll make a deal

and stick to it if it meets Russia's essential conditions. They don't believe that Putin has any

intention of going on to attack NATO.

There's a difference in conception of how this war will end. They're those who believe they're

maximalist aims in Ukraine, which intend to attack Baltic states and NATO. And there are others who
