Summary

Your child is refusing to go to school, but you don’t know why. Your child is up all night in a perpetual state of panic, but nothing seems to calm them down. Your child is tapping things and turning the light switch on and off three times, but you have no idea why. Knowing your child has anxiety or OCD is different from knowing what is behind your child’s anxiety or OCD.***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comInterested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? Here's your host, Child Therapist Natasha Daniels.

0:11.0

Well, hello there, and welcome to another episode of the AT Parenting Survival

0:17.5

Podcast. I hope you're having a great week. I want to talk to you today about finding out your child's core beer. Now you might

0:26.6

be saying Natasha this is really obvious I really don't need to listen to a

0:30.9

podcast about how to figure out what my child's afraid of because I deal with that on a daily basis.

0:36.0

Yes and no.

0:38.0

Most of us know what the front burner issue is.

0:42.0

We know that our child is refusing to go to school.

0:44.6

We know that our child is afraid to go to sleep at night.

0:48.1

Or if our child has OCD, we know that our child is washing their hands non-stop or they're overwiping or they're tapping in

0:57.3

threes. We know those things but do we go down the rabbit hole and figure out what the core fear is?

1:06.0

And without that, really therapy and any kind of approach that I talk about, or any therapist talks about isn't going to work or

1:15.3

is going to take a much longer time because you're not addressing the main issue, you're

1:20.7

addressing the symptoms. I kind of equate it to like this octopus. Just

1:28.3

stay with me for a minute. You know you're whacking at all the arms and maybe you conquer one arm but then the seven

1:35.9

other arms that you haven't dealt with are popping up and you see them as seven or

1:40.2

eight different problems instead of different arms of the same beast.

1:45.2

And instead of hitting the arms, go for the head and kill the beast.

1:50.7

Okay, now it's starting to sound violent. But it's the only analogy I've got

1:56.6

right now so you just have to go with me. That's how a lot of anxiety and OCD is

2:00.9

treated. People are focusing on the arms and not
