Summary

Your child is bombarded with “bad thoughts.” They are asking you bizarre questions that are stopping you dead in your tracks. What if I hurt myself? What if I hurt you? What if I set the house on fire? What if I jump in front of a train? What if I left a scratch on your car? They riddle every conversation with apologies and more questions. They are consumed with worry. They don’t want to have these thoughts. They don’t want to hurt themselves or other people. But they can’t make these thoughts stop. These thoughts scare you. These thoughts scare them. Welcome to the world of Harm OCD. Harm OCD is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. ***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comInterested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? 0:07.0

Here's your host, Child Therapist Natasha Daniels.

0:11.0

Well, hello there, and welcome to another episode of the AT Parenting Survival

0:16.1

Podcast. Today I want to talk to you about a certain type of OCD. I really want to make it my mission to cover every O. C. D.

0:25.9

Thee, and I think if you're a parent who has a child with O. C. D.

0:30.8

It should be your mission to listen to every episode of every O. C. D.

0:35.6

theme that I'm going to do because O. C. D. Morphs and it changes constantly.

0:41.6

And so I do find that one of the biggest mistakes a lot of

0:44.4

parents make is they hyper focus on their own child's OCD issue, whether it's

0:50.8

germs or confessing or symmetry or just right and they really don't

0:56.7

study and understand and learn about the other OCD themes which is totally

1:02.2

understandable because if you're in the middle of

1:04.4

dealing with like this craziness of trying to help your child with this OCD theme related to germs,

1:11.9

you really aren't going to have the time or energy or the capacity to maybe absorb something that isn't really impacting your kit.

1:19.0

But it is important, and I'll tell you why. It's really important because you want to keep an eye out for new things that pop up and I often in my practice equate OCD to a weed and you might be pulling weeds in one part of your yard and think, wow, this yard looks beautiful.

1:36.0

Meanwhile, deep roots are being established somewhere else in your yard,

1:41.0

and those roots are going to pop up and be super strong because you're not paying attention.

1:45.0

So I am here to try to help educate you on what OCD is so you really understand it.

1:51.7

Now we're going to talk today about harm OCD.

1:55.6

And your child might be struggling with it,

1:58.0

or you just might be like, you know, I'm

1:59.7

going to listen Natasha's podcast,
