This is John Batchel, a conversation with colleague Henry Sikolsky of the Non-Proliferation Policy Education Center

about the nuclear weapon arms race in Eurasia,

Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and India.

Part of having a nuclear weapon can be having nuclear power plants.

And Henry emphasizes that a nuclear power plant is easily turned into a weapon against your population.

It is a risk that is not managed well.

We discovered that Henry and I in talking about the risk to the nuclear power plants in Ukraine, fired on routinely by the

Russian forces. Here's Henry to explain. More of this tonight. Well, you anticipate a concern

which has been very much a favorite at my center, and that is, before anyone necessarily goes to all-out

total war, much less nuclear exchanges, they might very well threaten nuclear plants that could

release radioactivity and cause everyone to want to leave that area

and salt the earth as a way of showing that they're serious about escalation.

Now, this is a little woolly-headed, but there have been 13 strikes or more, historically, in the Middle East against reactors in Iran, Syria, Israel, and Iraq.

So it's not that kooky.

And, of course, looking at what's going on in Ukraine, it's all too reasonable to be fearful about this.
