I'm John Batson with my colleague Gregory Copley of Defense and Foreign Affairs,

reviewing election results already or pending.

And the election that is at hand for a surprise is a man who has not been a politician for many years,

an historian, and a vigorous supporter of Donald Trump,

his name is Novrovsky, and he wins the presidency for Poland. This is a government where the

prime minister is in charge of the government, the legislature, and the president has certain

defined duties to do with foreign affairs and some veto power.

Most importantly, the Polish people have voted to go right after going left with Donald

Tuss, the now prime minister.

This, of course, introduces the question of where is Poland standing with regard European Union, with regard Russia, with regard Ukraine.

Gregory, do you see a profound change electing a man who identifies as a populist right of

center populist as the president of Poland, or is this business as usual?

Well, it's not quite extreme and it's not quite business as usual.

Carol Norovsky is, as you say, conservative, pro-Trump political operative, if you like,

and Trump supported him in this, and, certainly got the victory that they were

seeking. And mind you, Donald Tusk himself is not necessarily left wing. He's basically

center-right, but his government has been very, very supportive of the European Union as a process.

What we are seeing, though, with this new election of the new president, is that the country

gradually weakens its ties with the European Union. It is definitely an anti-EU election,

and that's very significant. And it it goes with the trend the European Union has

failed to recognize this failed to address it failed to basically if you like compensate in any way

and we see that throughout the rest of the European Union as well so it's going to be

...
