I'm John Batchel with colleague John U, Senior Research Fellows Civitas Institute,

a distinguished visiting professor at the School of Civic Leadership at the University of Texas at Austin.

It's also a professor of law at the University of California at Berkeley, and I call upon the law part.

The UN charter following the League of Nations is inadequate.

It was unrealistic.

It was aspirational at best.

However, here we are in the 21st century.

We have reason to believe that rogue states such as North Korea and Iran can or are in possession of

nuclear weapons that would trigger Armageddon in Eurasia. Do we stand back as the United States

secure in North America or do we stay involved? Do we stay as an intervener if our issues are challenged, such as our support

for Israel or such as our support for free trade? There's the question. John, do we need a convening

of the powers? That would be the European Union, the United States, and China and Russia coming together,

agreeing when and how we might move with some ambiguity. I understand. I'm not asking to nail it

down. Is that imaginable to you, John? Yes, that's again, John, you're asking hard questions. This is

what people are thinking about

today. I do think it's not possible. And I think this is the lesson of World Wars 1 and 2.

It's not possible for the U.S. to withdraw to hope that affairs in Europe and Asia will handle

themselves and we can hide behind the oceans. We've tried that twice and it didn't work.

And in the case of World War II, we suffered a devastating attack as a result and were pulled

into a war unprepared.

I think that the United States initially has to put our own house in order in the sense

that we have to restore
