This is the Friendsfistria Debating Society. I'm John Batchel, visiting with Jeremy Zackison, New South Wales,

who reminds me each week that everything in Australia is exotic and will try to kill you.

Jeremy checks his vehicle when he gets in it to drive to work. He checks it when he gets in it to drive home.

Why?

There you are cruising at 80 kilometers per hour, which Jeremy reminds me is about 50 miles per hour,

and suddenly you feel something moving on your bare leg.

Jeremy, what is it and what happens?

Well, John, in this case, this was actually one of the most venomous snakes we have have here in Australia, the tiger snake.

And this isn't a made-up thing.

This isn't a movie.

This is true.

This actually happened on the Monash Freeway in Victoria.

And the Monash Freeway is effectively a large ring route freeway that goes around Melbourne,

Victoria's largest city, and basically

feeds to the outer rims. But this poor lady was driving down in her four-wheel drive, just happily

enjoying a day. She was there in her shorts because it's been so hot, so humid even in Victoria.

She had her flip-flops on. Didn't think anything of it. Then all of a sudden, at 80 kilometers

now, she felt something first, kind of touched her leg

and kind of slither, well, she didn't think slither.

She thought it was just something kind of falling against her foot, and she thought, well,

maybe there's a bit of rubbish in the car.

That's okay.
